Excerpt Two:
When she got outside, she ran down the marble stairs towards a waiting transport. The heavy metal door slid back as she approached. But before she could enter, she felt a tug on her upper arm.
"Why are you in such a hurry?" Jon asked.
Ignoring him, she climbed into the vehicle. Jon entered after her and stretched out his legs as the door closed.
She reached forward and placed her hand on the ID plate.
"Good evening, Sentry Leader Nadira. What is your desired location?" The computerized voice inquired.
"Take me home," she replied as she settled back into her seat. Their apartment was in a tower only about 15 minutes from this one. But by the looks of the clogged traffic lanes, the trip would probably take longer. This main boulevard led through the Entertainments District, one of the busiest areas of the city.
"Tell me what happened. Why do you think they killed your parents? Where did you get that?"
The transport pulled out into the traffic lane and slowly rumbled down the boulevard. Nadira looked out over the crowd, just in case she saw Zina among them. She knew it was a waste of time, if anything Zina would be in her private transport.
"I went to see Mikal at the detention center. He told me everything. My father got to the penal colony. He wasn't lost out there. They had him killed."

Character Inspiration for the Hathor Legacy series
My original idea for the hero and heroine in the Hathor Legacy series was a bit different than what made it to the page. Initially, Jonathan was a world-weary and somewhat shady nightclub owner. Nadira was still a member of the Guardians, but she had a brother and she didn't know who her parents were. In that earlier version of the story, the psychic Guardians took the PSI infants from their parents and raised them to fit into specific roles.
After thinking about the story, I decided to create a different background for both characters. For instance, you could say that Nadira is the "chosen one." So, that means she has to fit the archetype. As the chosen one who will save her people, she's been separated from her parents at an early age, has to discover the real circumstances of her past, and ultimately comes to accept the fact that she has a responsibility to fulfill a purpose.
As an avid reader, I can tell you I've seen that origin in characters from Superman, to Harry Potter, to the Xenogenesis series by Octavia E Butler (my personal inspiration) and countless other stories.
In order for Jonathan Keel to be a credible hero, he had to be strong enough to be believable as Nadira’s love interest. I decided to change him from a dishonest man with a past, to a much more earnest person closer to her age.
Jonathan is extremely impulsive (at least in book one, "Hathor Legacy: Outcast") and passionate about what he believes in. He complements Nadira’s personality by being fiery where she's cooler and more logical.
Although I had some readers tell me that Jonathan was too much of a brat in book one, "Hathor Legacy: Outcast," he had to be that way in order to keep the plot moving forward. His actions led to Nadira's reactions, and that pushed the story along.
A strong heroine has to have an equally strong (and perhaps headstrong) hero. That creates tension and conflict. Jonathan is resilient enough to be a partner to a powerful woman, and yet, he is a man. He wants to protect Nadira from harm, even though he understands she has to meet danger head-on. At the same time, Nadira is attracted to the qualities Jon has that she doesn't.
Because I wanted to show that their relationship had matured, there was a switch starting in book two, "Hathor Legacy: Burn." Nadira started to display more of Jonathan's impulsiveness and he (at times) was more logical. They began to mirror each other and take on each other's qualities.
Jonathan's background is different from Nadira's. He's in the executive social class, which places him at the top of the hierarchy. In addition, he was raised by both of his parents and had a sense of security growing up that Nadira didn't. However, they aren't total opposites. His mother's origins connect him to Nadira's origins (as revealed in "Hathor Legacy: Outcast").
That connection is an important thread in the series and explains why Nadira and Jonathan, who may seem like opposites on the surface, are fated to be together.
Readers of the third book, "Hathor Legacy: Revelations" will see how everything wraps up across this trilogy. But I just want to add that the Hathor Legacy series will continue with a new entry, "Hathor Legacy: Exile" which will be published in 2017 and feature Sergeant Tomas´ Tragg. Happy reading!
