Review Tour: Laurel's Gift by Tricia McGill

Laurel's Gift
by Tricia McGill

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Paranormal/Contemporary
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The plaintive singing of a ghostly child in the night sets off a chain of events that lead to Laurel learning
the dark secrets that dwell in her Great Aunt Maggie’s house in a Melbourne suburb. When Eli comes
into Laurel’s life, instead of instantly uncovering the secrets that have been buried in this house for
many years, their joint efforts lead them to discover even greater mysteries.

Eli’s past is tied up with the ghost of the child who haunts the house, and there are many hurdles to
cross before he discovers just why he also sensed strange vibes in the old house as soon as he
entered.

In their search for the answers to an extraordinary mystery they uncover a passionate love affair
shared by the people dear to them or those who dwelt in the house at one time of another. Despite
their shared psychic abilities can the couple also find such a love?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
The phone rang while she was deciding which clothes to wear. Laurel sat on the side of the bed and
picked up the extension.
“Good morning. How did you sleep?” Eli asked. He possessed a really nice voice, she had to admit.
“Not the best.” Wasn’t that the truth? Laurel ran a hand over her head. She really should have called
Ben first thing. Too many things were happening in her life too suddenly and her brain was beginning
to feel like mush.
“No interruptions?”
“No.” Presumably he meant the child.
My Review: 4*
I chose this book because I am a avid reader of paranormal. I love books about ghosts. When I saw this book had the spirit of a little girl I jumped at the chance to read it. I was a little disappointed that the book did not center a little more on the ghost aspect it was still a very good read. The book mostly centers on Laurel and Eli's budding romance, I still set up late turning pages. This is a rather short book. I was able to read it in one sitting. The book takes place in a suburb of  Melbourne Australia. The stars of the book are Laurel and Eli along with 2 cats and Charlie the dog.
Laurel is staying at her Great Aunt Maggie's place to take care of her pets after Maggie is put into a nursing home due to a nasty fall. On Valentine's day a bouquet of roses are delivered to the house for Maggie and Laurel decides to find out who sent them so she can let them know about Maggie's fall. This is where things get interesting.
Eli is the nephew of David. David is love of Maggie's life, even though they never got to really be together. David passed away several years ago, but before his death asked him to carry on with sending roses to Maggie every year on Valentine's day.
Eli and Laurel meet face to face and sparks immediately fly. They have a lot in common. Seeing spirits is the big one. Laurel has been sensing the spirit of a little girl since she first arrived at Maggie's house. She has heard the little girl singing and has also been led to a few clues in the mystery of the little girl. Eli also senses something there. Laurel and Eli try to unravel the mystery of the little girl.
Along the way a few new mysteries come up and the 2 find them smack dab in the middle. Maggie passes away and they find her journal. Eli's father passes away as well a whole bunch of mysteries arise. Together Laurel and Eli try to work out all they clues they are running across and the deep dark secrets the passing of his father and her Aunt open up.
After
her father remarries, Britt Kelly’s life becomes a cesspit. She
There
I'm
one of those weird people who have always played with fantasy. Had a
pretend friend by the time I was three, play acted elaborate
fantasies even after I learned not to talk about them, read comic
books, and discovered Oz, A. L. Merritt, Andre Norton, and Fritz
Leiber before my teens.
The
gears changed to include writing fantasy after the sixth grade. Until
then, mysteries ala Nancy Drew were my favorites. Most of my fiction
writing has been lost through the years. Must admit, though, I still
have the Clue of the Clay Cats, written in the sixth and seventh
grade, sitting in some file drawer.
Many
fantasy worlds have entertained me since then...but I've only written
in two since I started writing again, aka consistently. My main two
worlds are Andor where demons prey upon humans and other supernatural
events occur and the Marches of the Far Isles. My favorites, though,
are my Far Isles Half-Elven, Renna, Mariah, and Kerry, where I
explore the political ramifications of genetic drift on a hybrid
elf/human population. Unfortunately, my Half-Elven had become a
cliche by the time I completed the 600,000+ words moldering in my
computer. [Which is okay. I mainly write to amuse
myself.]
Currently, live with
my old man and two lap-cats in Colorado. The kids have long flown the
coop. Some of my favorite authors remain Alexander, Briggs, Belcher,
Cooper, Croogon, Pierce, Butcher, Elkins, McCrumb, Gaiman, O'Connell,
etc. etc. etc.
Oh, yes, my
pubs. I've published shorter fantasy for my Half-Elven, including
Troublesome Neighbors and Vengeance. Andor short stories include
Night for the Gargoyles [which inspired Andor], Showdown at Crossings
[prequel to There Be Demons], Doom Comes for a Sold Soul, and The
Ghost in the Closet. The short stories are both free and 99c.
NBTM: The Exiled Otherkin by D. Lieber
The Exiled Otherkin
by D. Lieber
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Fantasy Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Exiled from Faerie when her father dies, half-Fae Ember is surprised by how much the human realm
has changed since she was there last. She takes a dangerous job on a merchant airship, hoping a life
on the move will keep her well-hidden. Sure, she misses her brother, but years of apathy have numbed
her emotions.
When the optimistic and naïve Reilley follows her, it’s annoying to say the least. But when she starts
feeling responsible for him, long-stifled emotions crack the ice around her heart.
Faeries, pirates, and traveling players meet in this steampunk fantasy adventure as Ember tries to
cope with feelings long forgotten and a past that pursues her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Two:

I scanned the crowd, but there was no sign of them. My stomach lurched, and I swallowed my panic. I moved as quickly as I could to the place where Reilley had just stood.

To the right was a dim alley with curtained doors lining the sides. I shot into the shady street.

“Reilley?” I called and received no answer.

Up ahead, a curtain covered the light that spilled into the alley. I rushed for that doorway. Ripping open the curtain, I lunged inside.

In the small room, two men sat on crates playing cards on a box in between them. They looked up as I entered.

“Where is he?”

Neither responded as they returned to their game. I spotted a door at the back of the room and barreled toward it. The two men moved to stop me.

“I don’t have time for this,” I told them as they blocked my way.

The one closest to the door I wanted to get through crossed his thick arms over his chest and lifted his chin, looking down at me with a smirk. His wirier friend stepped toward me and pointed the way I’d come.

“This party is closed,” he said with a heavy accent. “If you don’t have an invitation, leave.”

“I just need to get my friend. Then, I’ll leave.”

He shook his head and grabbed my upper arm to escort me out. “You will leave now.”

I rotated my elbow and broke his grip then pulled back and drove the heel of my hand into his nose.

Interview with D. Lieber
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
Inspiration comes from all over. Every bit of information I consume, every book, every TV show, every movie, every song, news stories, people I meet, dreams, off-handed comments, everything has the potential to spark a story idea.

How did you do research for your book?
For The Exiled Otherkin, most of my research was first-hand experience (for instance, places I’ve traveled to), accounts and insights from friends (self-defense and fighting techniques), and Internet research (physics, martial arts videos, photographs of cities I’ve never visited, etc).

Do you have another profession besides writing?
No, my day job is to write feature stories for a government magazine. Sometimes I’m assigned other duties, such as simple graphic design projects, but I’m primarily a writer and associate editor.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I would go to a place that didn’t have written records. At this moment, I’d like to visit some First Nations in Western Canada prior to European interaction because they are part of the story I’m currently working on.

What is your next project?
The next novel readers will see is called Intended Bondmates, and it is set to release June 21, 2018.

No one said guarding a faeling from bloodthirsty vampires would be easy. In fact, Runa trained all her life to protect her intended bondmate, Konner, until he could awaken his full magic.

She was looking forward to her time with the young fae until tragedy shattered her plans. For the last thirteen years, she’s been bound with Mikhail, her best friend’s intended bondmate. Neither of them was happy with the arrangement, but she never thought he’d request to unbind from her early.

When all hope of Runa fulfilling her rite and joining werewolf society is threatened, Konner comes through and agrees to become her bondmate.

Thinking her life has changed for the better, Runa eagerly rushes to Konner’s side.  But Konner hasn’t forgiven her for abandoning him. And Rowan, bound with Konner’s brother, is hostile toward the fellow werewolf that left him to protect two faelings alone.

But when the internet search points to Amy as his perfect mate, that changes everything. To make matters worse, as his feelings for her grow, an enemy emerges threatening to ruin any hope of love for either of them.

Can the overcome their preconceived notions about each other and find common ground together or will yet another obstacle stand in their way?

 Excerpt

She stilled and the sensation disappeared once the man went into the elevator and was out of sight. Her pulse returned to normal. She waited another few seconds and headed back out into the dreary evening. The fog made the world seem darker.

Amy opened the door, head down, and walked right into a wall of muscled chest. Worried it was the man in the bowler hat, she swallowed a cry, stepped back into the foyer of the building and looked up at the man who was at least a foot taller than her. Her breath caught in her throat. Lucio Aussa still seemed larger than life.

"Amy Fields?" His rich tones were deeper and brought a chill of adult awareness.

She dropped her umbrella to the linoleum. She knelt down to pick it up, as did he. They almost bumped heads but she let him get her umbrella and he handed it back to her. "You're prettier than I remember."

"You remember me?" She straightened, her legs shaky.

"You're Evie's little sister." He stood too.

Right. Her stomach shouldn't flip. He had to get married soon, as the world knew, and her sister was the Fields girl he’d been interested in. It was too bad Evie intended to marry His Grace Michael Flynn, and be his duchess. Why was Lucio here, speaking to her right now? "That's right. My sister doesn't work with me or anything…”

"It's raining pretty heavily. Let me give you a ride." He opened the door, allowing a cool rush of air inside.

There was no reason her stomach should tense. His dark, shining hair curled over his ears and those dark brown eyes tempted her to swoon. Amy Fields never swooned. She lowered her head, her face hot with embarrassment. "I don't want to be a bother, Your Highness."

"I came to talk to you,” he said. “So it would be my pleasure, Amy."

He had? Her named rolled off his tongue with ease. Her chest warmed from his nearness, and her cheeks must be scarlet at this point. "If you’re here to order an analysis of your country, you’ll need to come back in the morning and sign a contract with my boss."

"I'm not here to hire you." A servant with a six-foot wide umbrella met them at the front door and Lucio led her toward his waiting limo on the street corner. "Not exactly anyway."

The servant opened the rear passenger door and she slid in across the leather seat. As Lucio closed the door, sitting so close to her their legs touched, she was rocketed back to high school Amy, who’d stared at him with longing as she wished he'd notice her, but then her sister would jump in front of her and throw herself at him. Evie had been relentless in her quest to one day be a princess. Amy shook off the memory as the car rolled down the street. She said, "I live out in Clapham."

"I know. You're doing pretty well for yourself." Drops of rain glistened on Lucio’s shoes. "I was hoping you'd join me for a quick dinner so we can talk."

Dinner? With him? It seemed like a dream where any second someone would yell “gotcha”, but she reigned in her imagination. He was a prince, and he’d belonged to Evie. She lifted her chin, intending to say no, but his brown eyes persuaded her to change her mind. "Okay. Dinner. I am curious, I’ll admit."

Giving in was a bad trait she needed to work on. His hand brushed against her leg but jerked back fast so she knew it had been an accident. However, the jolt she felt was unexpected. "Thanks." He turned toward the driver. "Please take us to Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester."
