Toe the Line by Roxanne D. Howard

Happy Holidays, everyone! Roxanne
D. Howard here. I write contemporary and paranormal erotic romance. With the
release on December 13th of my second book in the COSTA MESA Series, Toe the
Line, I’d like to discuss my playlist for the book and how Holiday music can
lift our moods.

Each of the COSTA MESA books are
holiday themed, and the main protagonist, Piper Goldhirsch, is Jewish. In book
2, after two months apart, sea Captain Jack Spencer is determined to get Piper
back. They reunite and set sail for Catalina Island for the holidays, but when
a murderous convict escapes Orange County jail and hijacks their boat with them
aboard, the tides will rise.

From the playlist below, one song
that stuck out to me is It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, originally
written by Eddie Pola and George Wyle, sung in a jazzy rendition by Harry
Connick, Jr. Lately in America and in the media, there has been so much
political upheaval and unrest. This song really does bring it all into
perspective about what a wonderful time of year it is for people of all
backgrounds, ethnicities, political persuasions, and sexual preferences to set
aside animosity and focus on the spirit of giving that the Holidays bring. It’s
a wonderful time of year to come together, to hope, and believe in miracles.

Please enjoy the playlist for Toe the Line.

I wish everyone a very wonderful
holiday season, and I hope all your wishes may come true from Santa. ;)

Tagline: After two months apart, Jack is determined to get Piper back. They reunite and set sail for Catalina Island for the holidays, but when a murderous convict escapes Orange County jail and hijacks their boat with them aboard, the tides will rise.

Book Description:

After two months apart from Jack and working in desolate, war-torn Syria, Piper is on her way home to California for Hanukkah. The tides have turned dramatically, and she is now an established journalist with Channel Four News. Though she's proud of where she's at with her career, her heart aches for the painful way she left things with Jack.

Jack is determined to make things right with Piper, no matter what. When he receives a cash settlement from Business Buster, he uses his newfound wealth to whisk her away on his new yacht for a romantic getaway to Catalina Island. In no time at all, the two lovers reignite the fiery blaze between them, and their steamy passion rekindles out on the open ocean. But when a dangerous, hidden stowaway hijacks the yacht and holds them both captive, Piper and Jack find themselves at his mercy. With nowhere to run, they must work together if they want to escape alive.

This holiday season, it’s time to Toe the Line.

Excerpt:
Jack made his
way up to the deck and pushed the cushioned bench away from the wheel and helm.
He preferred to stand while he navigated, and he enjoyed the way the wind
played on his face. He walked over to the dock pilings and cast off their
moorings and then went over to the wheel, started the boat, and threw it into
reverse, pulling away from the dock. He felt on top of the world. Once he had
the boat turned and started the thrust, the bow of the boat cut through the
water like a pair of sharp scissors down silk. Right away, he’d noticed the
difference from the much larger and older Pacific Explorer; this boat sailed
smoothly and almost glided through the waves. Of course, they were still in the
bay, so it would be different once they were out on the open ocean.
He didn’t know
how in the hell he’d convinced Piper to come with him, but he wouldn’t let this
chance slip through his fingers. She would get the royal treatment and nothing
less. With a thankful heart, he took Butterfly Eyes out to sea. He’d had a few
practice runs after he’d bought the boat, but this was the first proper trip.
He was excited. As a child, he’d thought his preoccupation with the ocean made
him strange, until he’d realized it was a passion.
Some people got
their high when they rock climbed, jumped out of airplanes, or skied off a
fresh, powdery slope. For Jack, it had been and would always be the deep-blue
sea. Nothing made a man feel more insignificant than being a small speck out on
the ocean. It also made him feel unique and powerful, something that drew him
back each day. He had hired two new tour captains since business took off in
November, w had left him more free time to get his life in order.
As he left the
bay and chartered into open water, Jack passed a pod of dolphins he normally saw
when on his whale-watching tours. The sun shimmered and highlighted their
grey-white bodies. The glare from the sun lit a golden path along the ridges of
the waves. He opened his shirt so he could feel the wind on his chest, turned
on some music, and watched the dolphins swim beside the boat. They loved a free
ride. People could learn a lot about how to treat each other from the ocean.
Dolphins stuck together, had each other’s backs, and watched out for one
another when a shark came.
“You look deep
in thought.”
He turned. Piper
stood with her hand on the top of the bench seat. She wore cutoff jean shorts
and one of his white shirts, buttoned a little between her breasts and tied at
the midriff. Her flat abs peeked out at him. Her dark curls flowed loose and
free about her face. She’d never looked more beautiful.
“Oh, I’m always
deep in thought.”
He cocked an
eyebrow at her and returned his attention to the water.
She snorted.
“What man is ever deep in thought?”
“Hey, Legs. Be
nice now. Not all of us men are idiots. I mean, the majority are, but not all.”
“Well, I worked
with Larry for years, so you can’t blame me for a little disillusionment.”
“I’ll do my best
to set you straight.” He glanced at her. She stood in the sun, and the breeze
lifted her hair. That wicked, wide mouth of hers set his imagination into
overdrive. He crooked a finger at her. “C’mere. You’re taking command.”
She pursed her
lips and sashayed toward him with a confident prowl. “Ooh, I like being in
command. It’s sexy.”
“You’re sexy.”
He brought both her hands up to the varnished wheel. “Stay right there,” he
breathed in her ear. He reached past her and switched the radio to CD mode. He
selected a track, and “Let It Snow” began to play. “Hang on,” he said. He
flipped on a light switch on an adjacent wall, and colorful fairy lights atop
the boat and all around the helm lit up.
“Oh, how cute!”
“Wait for it,”
he cautioned.
He took a small,
flat remote control from his pocket and hit a button. Piper looked around. Then
a snowflake landed on her nose, followed by several more, until thick, white
flakes fell through the open sunroof. Her face lit up in a huge grin, and she
shook her head fondly.
“Sunshine and
snow… Jack Spencer, you’re a romantic.”
“I’m a
crusty-old sea dog. I have no idea what you’re even talking about,” he said
dryly
He wiped a
snowflake off Piper’s face. She laughed as the holiday jingle serenaded them.
“Right.”
He kissed the
top of her head and watched the ocean. Piper sighed and leaned into him.

BOOK TOUR: The Stages of Grace: Life and Love in the Face of Alzheimer's by Connie Ruben

Book Description:

This book was written out of a desire to share with others who have loved ones with Alzheimer's disease what I have experience as Grace' caregiver and friend. I wanted to capture the emotions, the expected and the unexpected issues, the painful times as well as the humorous and loving moments that Grace and I have shared as a result of this disease. This is not mean to be a handbook for dealing with Alzheimer's disease, but I hope that by sharing my feelings and experiences, readers may recognize they are not alone on this particular journey.

Author's Bio:

Connie Ruben is an entrepreneur with well developed management skills. She has run several large companies, and prides herself on empowering others to work to their full potential. Connie also has an intimate knowledge of the challenges and joys of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease, as her mother-in-law Grace was diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer’s disease in 2003. While Connie still struggles to balance her work life and home life, her understanding of this disease has made it easier for her to negotiate the demands of being a caregiver, as well as a wife, mother, and employer. She has written this book in order to share the insights she has gained as Grace’s primary caregiver and friend. Most importantly, Connie wants this book to assure others that caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease can be enjoyable, life-affirming, and emotionally significant.

Interview with Connie Ruben
  1. Do you have a career outside of writing:
I’ve been a professional business women most of my adult life and am currently the President of a holding company in Calgary.  Balancing work, family, Grace and the other aspects of life has been an interesting adventure.  Then of course there are the three girls and now four grandchildren..

  1. How did your husband feel about you sharing your family life with the public in this manner?
I’m pleased to say Peter was very supportive though I believe a little surprised that I took this project on.  As he was part of the story, it was nice to get his feedback but also important that I stayed strong and made sure I was writing my story and not his.

  1. Did you ever get writers block, did you ever want to quit?
I don’t believe I suffered from writers block, but there were many times I wanted to quit.  As writing is not an enjoyment for me, I struggled many times with the concept that other people would take the time to read this.  I had to constantly check in with myself as to the real motivation for writing.  For me, it was to  help others and in the process I helped myself.
  1. In your book you mention different geographical locations, which is your favorite?
This is tough has they each have special qualities.  Our home in Sausalito is quite unique as we live on a 128 year old Steam Schooner. Living on the San Francisco Bay part of the year not only provides a respite from everyday life in Calgary but completely recharges my personal batteries.
  1. In the book you made a decision to keep Grace at home with you.  Have you ever regretted that decision?

I’ve never regretted having her with us.  That said, there have been and continue to be times when I feel overwhelmed and that I took on more than I could handle.  Each day you get up not knowing what stages of the disease will show itself and yet hopeful that a glimmer of the old Grace might show through.  My love for her keeps me going and I continue to learn from all she still has to give.

Excerpt Two:

Love & Rockets

“What do you want from me?”
“What do I want from you?” he repeated, then gave a husky chuckle. “Where do I start?”

“I mean, what are you after? Me or Grace? Are you here to help her, or are you trying to get into my pants, because you wouldn’t be the first.” She launched her little salvo with raised brows.

“Clearly.”

Her temper flared. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

He gestured toward the living room. “Well, obviously I’m not the first, you have Grace. What I’m trying to figure out is why being here has     to be an either-or thing. I’d assume the two of you are a package deal   no matter what.”

Planting her hands on her hips, she thrust her chin into the air. “We are.” “There you go.”

She squinted at him, annoyed by his cavalier tone. “There I go what?” He exhaled long and loud, then closed the distance between them. Darla yelped a little when he pulled her flush against his body. Again. God, he was tall. And taut. She thought about running her hands all over him like she had earlier. But without the clothes. Apparently, he was thinking the same thing, because he shifted to bring their bodies into perfect alignment. Her breath caught and held when he lowered his head. His was warm and damp against her skin. She could almost taste a hint of the wine. She called on every ounce of her reserve not to purse her lips

in a silent plea.

“I want the package deal.”

The breath rushed from her lungs. His mouth was a surprise. Soft. Unspeakably soft. But the kiss was firm. Commanding. It took a few seconds for her brain to catch on, and the second she reacted, he pulled back.

Here are a couple of sneak peeks!

ETERNAL NIGHT, by Jade Kerrion
Ashra’s hand trailed across Jaden’s muscled torso. He made it easy for her to be gentle. His body trembled as if he longed for her. His mouth was hungry for her kiss. He arched up against her, as if craving more. His need was like a living creature, wild and aching for her touch.

Eyes closed, Ashra shivered. Only one other person had desired her as much.

And he was dead.

She forced her way through the memories of pale bodies tangled upon cool silk sheets. When her soul-sucking power leeched out, it found no opposition. Images of the human’s life rewound in a blaze of vivid sights, sounds, and sensations.

Ashra looked up at Tera, her smile little more than a barely perceptible curve of her lips. “He fancies himself the protector of the child of prophecy. Was she among those taken tonight?”

Tera nodded.

Ashra chuckled, the sound without humor. “It’s a pity her genetic heritage wasn’t sufficiently superior to prevent her from being culled.”

“There’s more. Go deep.”

She pushed past the blackness at the start of his memories, expecting deeper darkness. Instead, the colors shifted into shades of ochre and gray. Memories, older than his body, resided in his soul; memories of an Earth long since lost to them—a planet surrounded and nourished by water; images of tall buildings glistening beneath a benevolent sun, and of thriving cities filled with the bustle of humans; memories of quiet and intimate conversations beneath a silver moon, the same silver moon that now graced Malum Turris with its light, though a thousand years older and viewed only from beneath the protection of the dome.

She saw herself as he must have seen her, a much-younger icrathari, still hopeful for the future, never realizing that the Earth they had all known and loved was irretrievably lost. Had she ever looked that vulnerable? Had her smile ever been so beautiful, so filled with love as she looked upon—

“Rohkeus?” Oh, blessed Creator, was that stricken whisper her voice?

Ashra pulled back and stared at the human. Her mouth dropped open. Her heart pounded in her chest, its beat erratic. It couldn’t be. It simply couldn’t be—

She looked up at Tera. The other icrathari nodded.

Rohkeus’s soul reborn…in a human.

Ashra threw her head back and laughed, a despairing sound. Her prince, her love, reduced to a human? Her slender fingers coiled into fists. Her golden eyes glittering, she pushed away from him, though her body trembled from the loss of his warmth. No, the human was not Rohkeus; he could never be Rohkeus.

Steeling herself against the gasp of pain that escaped from his lips as the anesthetizing effect of her kiss faded, Ashra rose to her feet with sinuous grace. “He is not one of us. Not anymore.” Nothing had been more devastating than losing Rohkeus to a human assassin. To see his soul reborn in that contemptible and weak race was an insult to the person Rohkeus had been.

“Should we turn him into a vampire?” Tera asked.

“Kill him. Set Rohkeus’s soul free.”

A Cross to Bear: A Gabriella Cross Paranormal Romance Book 1
All around her, the sounds of baying wolves echoed in the night. Trees slapped her face as she ran, and she tripped more than once. She was crying now and mumbling to herself, terrified. She dared not look back, knowing that the wolves were pursuing her. She came out of the woods into a clearing leading to a tall hill. The howls came from all directions. Shadows flew through the woods in her peripheral vision, and Gabby cried out. She fell again, skinning her knee badly on a jagged rock. In her terrified state, she felt no pain, but continued as fast as she could and ran up the hill.

A snarl came from directly behind her, and she instinctively turned and cried out. A wolf was bearing down on her fast. She turned and raised a hand as the beast leapt at her with gleaming claws leading the way.

“NO!” Gabby cried.

To her amazement, the wolf changed form in mid-flight and turned into a naked man. He landed at her feet on all fours and snarled at her.

“Get away from me!” she screamed.

The naked man backed away from her warily, glancing down at his human hands with a look of confusion and shock. More wolves were coming out of the woods. They stopped when they saw the one who had turned into a human in the light of the full moon.

Gabby wasted no time considering her luck and ran as fast as she could up the hill.

“Gabriella Cross, stop!” Michael’s voice rose up over the howls.

Gabby could hardly see through her tears. She didn’t dare look back, knowing that she would find death closing in on her. She reached the top of the hill and ran across the flat expanse of rocky earth.

“Gabriella!” came the voice again.

The wolves were gaining on her.

She darted between two pines blocking her way, receiving many scrapes on her face and arms. Half blinded by tears and slapping branches, she stumbled out from between the trees and suddenly came to a steep cliff. She tried to stop, but her momentum was too great. With a terrified cry she fell forward over the cliff.

She frantically thrashed her arms as she fell to her death. Above, on the ledge, a mournful wolf cried out. The ground was coming up fast to crush her, and Gabby closed her eyes, not wanting to see her death.

Then. Suddenly. Gabriella was weightless.

Strong arms held her firmly. She opened her eyes to find a winged beast staring back at her.

Gabby passed out.
