In 1928, Chicago rocks to the rhythm of the Jazz Age, and Prohibition is in full swing. Small-town girl Marjorie Corrigan, visiting the city for the first time, has sworn that coffee's the strongest drink that will pass her lips. But her quiet, orderly life turns topsy-turvy when she spots her high school sweetheart--presumed killed in the Great War--alive and well in a train station. Suddenly everything is up for grabs.

Although the stranger insists he's not who she thinks he is, Marjorie becomes obsessed with finding out the truth. To the dismay of her fiancé and family, she moves to the city and takes a job at a department store so she can spy on him. Meanwhile, the glittering world of her roommate, Dot, begins to look awfully enticing--especially when the object of her obsession seems to be part of that world. Is it really so terrible to bob her hair and shorten her skirt? To visit a speakeasy? Just for a cup of coffee, of course.

But what about her scruples? What about the successful young doctor to whom she's engaged, who keeps begging her to come back home where she belongs? And what, exactly, is going on at the store's loading dock so late at night?

Amid a whirlwind of trials and temptations, Marjorie must make a choice. Will the mystery man prove to be the cream in her coffee--the missing ingredient to the life she yearns for? Or will he leave only bitterness in her heart?

"The cat’s pajamas! Rich in jazzy details of 1920s Chicago, You’re the Cream in My Coffee is a sparkling debut novel. With an adventurous heroine, intriguing side characters, and a thought-provoking message, this story will keep you riveted. Jennifer Lamont Leo is a name to watch in historical fiction!" -Sarah Sundin, award-winning author of Anchor in the Storm

"Every single inch of this novel is delightful. From the start Marjorie Corrigan felt like a friend, one I was glad to see each time I returned to her story. With charming characters and a plot that keeps moving, this is a novel you don’t want to miss. Jennifer Lamont Leo is a fresh voice in Christian fiction. I can’t wait to read more of her work." -Susie Finkbeiner, author of A Cup of Dust: A Novel of the Dust Bowl

An interview with Jennifer Lamont Leo about You’re the Cream in My Coffee
You’re the Cream in My Coffee is your first novel, set in the Roaring Twenties. Tell us about the story.
Set in 1928, it’s about a small-town woman, Marjorie Corrigan, who has never quite gotten over the death of her first love in the Great War. Now she’s engaged to another man, but when circumstances send her on a trip to Chicago, she thinks she spots her first love walking through a train station, alive and well. Of course she can’t return home until she finds out his true identity, so she figures out a way to stay in the city. To the horror of her family and fiancĂ© back home, she gets a job in a department store and shares an apartment with a flapper. In the process of finding out the identity of the mystery man, Marjorie discovers a great deal about herself, as well. It’s clean, inspirational historical fiction.
Why did you choose to set your novel 1920s-era Chicago?
Growing up near Chicago, I was always drawn to the city and its colorful history. I loved listening to older people reminisce and tell stories. Historically the 1920s were dramatic, a time of rapid social change, and Chicago was at the epicenter. The aftereffects of World War I, Prohibition, changing moral standards, people moving from farms to cities, women getting the vote and joining the workforce in greater numbers, widespread use of technology like the automobile, telephone, and radio, economic prosperity--all these elements had a profound effect on the way people lived their lives and interacted with one another. Time-honored customs and traditions were flipped on their heads, often for good, but sometimes not so good.
While I love reading fiction set in this time period, I grew tired of stories that glorified rebellion, drinking, smoking, lawbreaking, and other transgressive behavior, as if smoking cigarettes were some kind of heroic act (Virginia Slims ads, I’m looking at you!). Hanging out in speakeasies was not an unalloyed joy, much as it’s often portrayed as such. I wanted to show a different angle, that a young woman might enjoy being “modern” in some ways, while not abandoning her strong faith and the moral standards she grew up with. So it’s a bit of a twist on the typical Roaring Twenties female-emancipation storyline. My character is emancipated, but in a different way.
One of your male characters suffers from shell shock, or what we now call post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). How was PTSD viewed and treated post-World War I versus today? Back then it was often considered a mark of weak character or a lack of courage. Today we have much more compassion and care for combat veterans. The medical community has learned--and continues to discover--new information about how the brain and nervous system operate under intense, prolonged stressful conditions like war, and we as a society are getting better at helping veterans cope. Not perfect, but better.
What are a few of your favorite go-to resources for information on the 1920s history information?
To study up on the 1920s, I read New World Coming: The 1920s and the Making of Modern America by Nathan Miller, Only Yesterday by Frederick Lewis Allen, The Damned and the Beautiful by Paula S. Fass, and The Twenties: Fords, Flappers & Fanatics by George E. Mowry. I also turned to the delightful memoir Through Charley’s Door by Emily Kimbrough, who worked at Marshall Field in the 1920s, and Give the Lady What She Wants, a history of Marshall Field & Company. I also perused Chicago newspapers of the day, as well as women’s magazines, catalogs, and museum archives for details about clothing and daily life.
Describe a bit of your writing process.
Research is my favorite part. I could get lost forever in the research and never get around to writing the story! My second favorite part is rewriting. The hardest part for me is getting the first draft down. I write best in the mornings, when my mind is freshest and my energy level highest. I also prefer to write to music: preferably something instrumental or classical, without words. Or something of the era, to get me in the mood. I have a writing room in my home, but occasionally take my work to a coffee shop for a change of pace. The only place I can’t work is the public library--I get too distracted by the books.
If there is one thing you’d change about your approach to writing fiction, what would it be?
I’d like to be more organized and systematic about my research. I tend to follow a trail wherever it leads, which is wonderfully serendipitous, but not terribly efficient. And I have lots of notes, articles, tidbits printed from the Internet, and other ephemera stored in boxes, with no easy, systematic way of finding what I’m looking for. That will have to change.
What authors have inspired you?
I’m especially fond of mid-20th-century women authors like Cornelia Otis Skinner, Emily Kimbrough, Betty MacDonald, Barbara Pym, and E. M. Delafield. They’re largely forgotten now, which is a pity, because their writing is bright, witty, and full of charm. I also enjoy the historical fiction of authors like Lynn Austin, Susan Meissner, and Sarah Sundin.
What are you working on next?
I’m writing a sequel to You’re the Cream in My Coffee, as yet untitled, due out in late 2017 from Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas. It picks up the story at the end of 1928, where the first book left off, and the primary focus switches to a different character, Dot Rodgers (Marjorie’s flapper roommate).

Virtual Blurb Blitz Tour for Rip Cord: The Reunion/The Weekend by Jeanne St. James

Rip Cord: The Reunion/The Weekend
by Jeanne St. James

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Contemporary erotic romance, LGBT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The Reunion
Gil Davis hated high school. Ever the geek, he has no intentions of attending his 10th year class reunion. The last thing he wants is to relive the taunting and teasing he received during his teenage years. However there is one thing he misses from high school: the star Varsity football player. The one he had a crush on from the first day he laid eyes on him. But the last thing he expects is the now pro football player to come back to their home town to attend a lame high school reunion. Known as the Bad Boy of the NFL, Ripley “Rip” Cord, not only shows up, but shows up without a date and an eye for Gil.

The Weekend
Geek extraordinaire Gil Davis hooked up with his long-time crush Rip Cord, the Bad Boy of the NFL, during their tenth year class reunion. It was a dream come true for Gil, so when Rip surprises Gil with a trip to the pro football player’s cabin on the lake two weeks later, Gil looks forward to their weekend alone. Since Rip is still deep in the closet due to his career, Gil will take any stolen moments they have. Little does Gil know, those moments will be filled with a blindfold and ropes, as well as a bad tumble down the mountain.

But a few bumps and bruises won’t stop Gil from spending precious time with Rip and his toys. However when the weekend ends, will Rip disappear again? Or will Rip want to take their relationship to the next level?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
“Relax. Trust me.” The bed tilted under Rip’s weight as he climbed on and straddled Gil’s waist.
“I want to give you a massage. It’ll help with your stiff muscles.”
Rip squirted what felt similar to baby oil onto Gil’s back, and as he rubbed it into his skin, Gil relaxed. Rip’s hands were perfect for a massage. They were broad and his fingers were long and strong.
Gil groaned in pleasure as Rip swirled the oil around his back, warming it up as he worked the skin under his palms. He massaged Gil’s shoulders with his thumbs and then the base of his neck, the top of his spine, and down the tight muscles that ran along his spine.
Gil’s breathing deepened, and he closed his eyes, enjoying the feel of his muscles being rubbed, Rip working the small of his back with his knuckles.
“How do you know to do this so well?”
“I get massages all the time because of football. Some are relaxing, but I pay attention to what the therapists are doing too. Though when it’s a deep-tissue massage, I’m usually holding back the screams. The therapists dig and work out knots, which can be very painful. Still, it’s worth it afterward.”
“No deep tissue, okay?”
Rip’s body shook as he chuckled. “No deep tissue today. But I can feel how tight the small of your back is.” He shifted down to straddle Gil’s thighs.
BECOMING EVIL
One year ago, Sera Murano chose evil. She left her human world behind to transform into an Ensoul, a rare and powerful demon, all to fight the evil she was about to become. Working for her father Lorenzo, the leader of all demons, she secretly vowed to overturn his plot to destroy humankind.
BATTLING EVIL
That is, until demon hunters attack Sera and her beloved, Damon, and the truth about the human-demon war is revealed. Torn between the human life of her past and the supernatural one she lives now, Sera must decide who is the worse enemy: evil or humanity.
BREAKING EVIL
To win the battle of her life, Sera is forced to do the unthinkable, taking drastic measures and risking the lives of those she loves most. She must fight to the death against the only supernatural leader she’s ever known, all for a chance to break the cycle of evil.
EXCERPT
Time was of the essence. Sera burst out of her room and into the hallway and raced down the long corridor. As she reached the winding stairs, she opened her mouth to scream that she was coming for Damon. But before she could say anything, a booming crack silenced her. It bellowed loudly.
The noise stopped her in her tracks. She had no idea where the sound had come from. Dazed, she froze in her steps and looked around, trying to identify its source. What was that? Her blood pumped fast through her system. When she took her next step, an excruciating and undeniable agony came over her. She had been attacked.
Stars swirled and danced in her vision. Everything dimmed.  The back of her head throbbed. The pain pounded in her skull, making a ba-boom sound over and over again. Without further warning, her body gave way, and she dropped fast to the hard floor. As she fell and desperately tried to right herself, she spun on the perfect angle to see the reason for her unfortunate circumstance. He loomed over her, poised for a further assault.
Her attacker was a dark, blurry figure. He watched her collapse with his small beady eyes glaring at her from the holes in his black mask. While the hunter's face was obscured, his smile gleamed brightly in the dimly lit house. Sera could have sworn she heard laughter. It was a note higher than she anticipated. She noticed the hunter's right arm; he was positioned ready to strike. He wielded a giant baseball bat, which had just connected with her head.
"What the…?” Sera’s rage metamorphosed into energy, thrusting through her like a roaring and violent storm. It readied her body to respond to her attacker.
The hunter pulled his arm back slowly until it was raised high above his head. He paused, a cocky move, meant to intimidate her.
Unwilling to fall victim to the masked assailant, Sera summoned her supernatural strength once again and pushed herself off the floor to face him. In a flash, he twisted his body and swung the bat toward her. Sera hesitated a beat too long, just enough for the demon hunter to get his wish.
She had been mere inches away from an upright stance, when the bat, in full swing, connected with her cheekbone. The impact sent Sera careening backward until she slammed up against a wall.
For seconds she teetered on the edge of the top stair.  Finally, she lost her battle with her balance and slid off the wall. To save herself, she took a leap, high into the air. But nonetheless, her body tumbled and crashed down the steps of the grand staircase.
The fall felt as if it lasted for minutes, but only seconds had passed. Conscious as she experienced her soar through the air, her body twisted and turned as it made its way to the bottom of the stairs. Without warning, her head smashed violently onto the marble foyer entrance. Everything faded to black.
She must decide if it’s love—or a game to win. After each outrageous date Tara shares advice with her followers, but embracing “no” just may be her key to happiness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Two:

The soft opening of the Gallerie, a restaurant that my firm helped design, was a success. I also met an adorable chef while I was there. OK, he’s technically not a chef yet, but he’s studying to become one. Right now he’s the bartender, and I almost let that dissuade me from giving him a chance. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I’m at the point where I want to be with someone who has high aspirations, which he does. He made me a delicious drink, so that’s also a bonus in my book. If you check out the Gallerie, which you should, ask for the T. W. Twist! I just made it up, but I think it has a nice ring to it, don’t you? I’ll have to talk to them about that. Anyway, something I’ve discovered is that I’m attracted to guys who are creative—they don’t call it the culinary arts for nothing. I’m more of a freethinker, so I don’t mesh well with analytical types. And I like a guy who sets a goal for himself and goes for it. That’s an admirable quality and says something about his character. We haven’t gone out yet, so I’ve probably already jinxed myself. But I’m excited about seeing him again and would’ve said yes on my own accord, not because of some pact. More to come. Ciao for now!

Interview with J B Glazer
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
I think I’ve always had an overactive imagination. At times when I’m supposed to be relaxing, like before bed or when I’m in the shower, my mind conjures up elaborate stories. While they are usually one-off scenarios, I can picture things happening with vivid detail. Perhaps it’s my way of unwinding. Some people do yoga, I think up happy endings. Anyway, I never did anything with these ideas—just tucked them away with the rest of the useless information that rests somewhere in my consciousness. Until one day when I decided it was time to write that novel, I had the realization that parts of it were already written.

So I channeled some of these ideas into a book. It was important to me that the book felt authentic, so that meant writing about what I know best. And I’m an agency gal. So my first book, Out in the Open, was a romance between two advertising executives, Lexi and Jake. One of my grand visions involved a particular celebrity crush of mine serenading a girl, who may have borne a close resemblance to yours truly. I started there, or technically ended with it, because I thought it would make for a great last chapter.

The inspiration for book two, I Should Have Said Yes, came from my desire to write about dating during a time that’s heavily influenced by social media. I already had my perfect protagonist: Lexi’s sister, Tara. Tara is the youngest of the Winters girls, the irresponsible sister who was always dating someone new. The book is a candid and entertaining look at a singleton’s dating journey when she must say yes to any guy who asks her out because of a pact, all documented on her Adventures in Dating blog. At first I planned to document her dates on Facebook, always posting about her disastrous adventures. But then I decided a blog was a better outlet. It turned out to be a fun experience coming up with new posts to summarize her thoughts on each guy she meets—and lessons learned along the way. The book is essentially one woman’s journey from consummate singleton to finding “The One,” documented for all to see.

How did you do research for your book?
Research in this case primarily required me to take a trip down memory lane. Many of Tara’s Mr. Wrongs were based on men I dated before I met my husband. And it’s funny because that was the hardest part of writing the book: coming up with unique and interesting suitors for Tara. I wanted her dates to be realistic but also entertaining. So I drew inspiration from my ghosts of dating past and those of my friends too. I didn’t necessarily tell them, so I’m just waiting for that phone call! I wouldn’t say it’s autobiographical, but it was interesting to come up with characters that were based on people I knew. Some intimately, LOL.

Do you have another profession besides writing?
By day I’m a marketer. I’ve worked in the industry for 17 years, all primarily with the same agency! I love being surrounded by dynamic and creative people. My favorite part is watching how the seed of an idea transforms into something tangible. There’s nothing like shopping at Target with your kids and showing them the display that your agency designed. What started as a sketch in someone’s mind was now a display in the store—and I played a key role in making that happen. It’s not as enriching as say, saving lives, but fun nonetheless. I don’t think there’s a better job than working in an industry that sells ideas. With each new project, anything is possible.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I would go back to 1993. I’m not sure if that’s what you had in mind. You were probably looking for the Renaissance or such a period in history. But 1993 holds significance for me because it’s the time when I was choosing where to go to college. And I feel like that decision set in motion a chain of events that’s shaped who I am today. To be clear, I’m perfectly happy with that person, but I feel like I missed an opportunity. I was debating between two schools: one local and one that was out-of-state. In my heart I wanted to spread my wings, but I chose the safe choice. I went to the University of Illinois, following in my older sister’s footsteps. It’s a wonderful school and I received an excellent education. But I’ve lived in Illinois all my life and wish I had ventured out and tried somewhere new. That’s not to say I haven’t traveled and had interesting experiences, but I feel like I’ve always taken the expected path. Perhaps that’s why I like writing. It gives me a chance to push my boundaries and explore those places I’ve never been.

What is your next project?
I’ve got an outline for book #3 mapped out in my head, I just need to put pen to paper. It’s a romance about an event planner, Lucy, who shares a passionate weekend with a mysterious stranger. It’s so out of character for her that she wants to keep their names anonymous. She falls hard only to never hear from him again. Lucy struggles with moving on and finally meets an incredible new guy who is perfect for her. But can she let go of her “Mr. Anonymous?” And is she in love with a ghost because it’s easier than facing the real thing? Along Lucy’s journey her love and loyalty will be put to the ultimate test. Look for it to hit shelves in summer 2017. I figure if I put that out there in writing, I’ll need to hold myself accountable.
