Excerpt Two:
Sunlight sliced into Layla’s eyes the moment she cracked them open. An impending threat itched along her skin. Outside, mostly naked and vulnerable, she jackknifed to a sitting position. Darkness roared to life. No! She’d dropped her guard. Out of the corner of her eye, she just managed to register Thaull lunge for her before her vision faded.
It was different this time...the reemerging. She took stock of her shaking limbs, the hand clamped onto her wrist, and the deep rumble of displeasure rattling in a male’s chest as reality seeped into her consciousness.
Her free hand grasped for her knife, her senses expanding, filling. Thaull. She knew his smell, and from last night, his name. Oh gods... What had she done?
Terrified to see the condemnation in his eyes, or worse, the pall of death filling them by her hand, she slowly turned. Transfixed by the splattered blood covering his bare chest, she followed the trail up his neck until her gaze landed on his face. His raw carnality hit her like a blast of heat. Was he always this way? His calculating eyes narrowed, observing her every move.
Unsure what to say to him, she cleared her throat. “Get out” hardly seemed appropriate.
Before she could speak, he was on her. His mouth forced hers open, his tongue filling her, fighting for space. He kissed the breath from her, and she was glad for it.
With his hand fisted in her hair, he tugged her head back, staring with an unfathomable look that pierced the depths of her soul. She stood, plastered against him, because he willed it. What just happened?

Interview with Amy McKinley
As a kid did you write or make up stories?
Like most kids, my imagination knew no bounds. My friends and I would create intricate worlds where we were the superheroes. It wasn’t until we began writing in school that I found another outlet for my imagination. Over time the stories shifted and evolved but the spark of an idea that spins out into another world is one I still thoroughly enjoy.
Where does most of your Character inspiration come from?
Everywhere. Main characters seem to come to me the most when my mind is relaxed while driving or about to fall asleep, but that’s not always the case. Daydreaming is a great way for ideas to form and play out.
The other day I was driving along a pretty country road and went past an old home set away from the road. My main character appeared in my head, as did the beginning for the book I want to write…someday. It’s jotted down in my growing file of story ideas.
Do some qualities of your characters come from real people?
Yes, some qualities do. I borrow certain traits or skills from friends and put them into my characters, or a stranger I may see that caught my eye. I know people who are painters, sculptors, and who lived in Scotland where Layla resides. Sharing qualities with people I know isn’t always the case; some of my characters are entirely fictional.
What was the inspiration for your book?
The inspiration for Taken began while driving through the mist. There is an otherworldly or effervescent quality to it early in the morning.
What is your favorite spot to write?
Lately it’s been on the loveseat in my office. I’ll sit with a laptop desk over my legs and type away. If I’m writing for long periods of time I need to sit at my desk as my posture is better there.
What advice would you give budding writers?
Keep going! If this is your passion then it’s worth it to keep pushing yourself, write every day if you’re able, and read every chance you get. Always read, and not only the genre you write in.
