Excerpt
Declan drove through a Dunkin Donuts drive-thru and bought two coffees and a dozen doughnuts. Victor took a big whiff of his hazelnut coffee and took a big bite from his jelly doughnut. “That’s more like it. That’s how you should treat your elders.”
“Until this morning, you were just my kidnapper,” replied Declan with a smirk.
“You didn’t call me that when you asked for my help.” Victor crossed his arms and glared at Declan..
“Alright, alright, I’m sorry. Can you please tell me about the capping and careful wrapping of the vials?” asked Declan raising one hand up in surrender as his other hand remained on the steering wheel.
Victor muffled with a mouthful of doughnut in response. “Because the demon is confined to the vial, it can still influence anyone that the vial comes into contact with. The vial is capped to indicate that there is a demon bound in it, and it also restricts physical contact to the interior surface of the vial. Also, we never directly touch the vials so we use a cloth that will serve as a barrier between our hand and them.”
“What do you mean by influence?” asked Declan.
“Remember what happened when you tried to hold Nelly down earlier? Through contact with the vial, the demon can communicate with you and make you see anything it wishes. Where do you think the legends of genies of the lamps come from? The holder of the object that a demon is bound to is given hallucinations that wishes have been granted to them. Then the demon convinces the holder to destroy the object to set them free,” Victor answered as he took a sip of his coffee and gave a sound of ecstasy.
“Aladdin was duped by a demon?” asked Declan incredulously.
“Yes he was, and later possessed by the same demon, becoming a very frightening ruler of the area he lived in,” replied Victor sounding tired.
“Okay … note to self, never pick up random objects. And if a voice comes from it, ditch it and run.” Declan looked nervously at Victor’s pocket where the vial with the bound demon resided. “So … what do you do with the vials? They seem kind of … dangerous …”
“It’s safer for you not to know this part. I don’t even know the exact locations. All I know is that there are multiple locations where these vials are safely locked up. They are constantly being moved around so that they are never in one location for too long. It’s for our protection that we don’t know because the demons are constantly after them. If you know, you can become a target. And trust me, the demons are masters of torture, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Some of us have been forced to watch as each of our loved ones were tortured and killed in front of our eyes,” explained Victor as redness and tears crept into his eyes.
