About The Sun God's Heir: Rebirth, Book 2:
The Count of Monte Cristo meets ancient Egypt in this riveting sequel to The Sun God’s Heir: Return.
Set during the wave tossed years of white slavery and Barbary pirates, this is the epic story of René Gilbert, a journey that defies time as he must draw on a larger awareness earned in previous lifetimes.
The plague’s dark fingers curl around Bordeaux. René must return home to save those he loves. But first he has to escape a Moroccan sultan’s clutches. In Bordeaux, an enemy waits, filled with a hatred three thousand years old. Only René can defeat this dark power, and only if he reclaims his own ancient past. In this arena, death is but the least of failure’s penalties.

Excerpt
HOREMHEB CURSED as he struggled to turn the invalid chair with his one useable hand. From behind his desk François Gaspard signaled to a nearby servant.
“I will cut off the hand that touches this chair.” Horemheb caught the man’s desperate glance at the senior Gaspard who paused and then nodded. With audible relief, the servant stepped back. Slowly, Horemheb pivoted his chair until it faced the desk.
The fire burning in the massive blackened stone fireplace added light and sound, but in this room, it was devoid of comfort. François Gaspard studied the disfigured face of the man he thought was his son Victor. His gaze escaped to the silver wine decanter at the side of his desk.
Horemheb enjoyed the other man’s visible uneasiness, the confusion and revulsion written across his face. Pity was an unused emotion that caused the elder Gaspard to fidget. His puzzled expression showed that he was aware the man in the invalid chair before him was no longer the spoiled vicious wastrel his son had been. Apparently, the specter of death had caused some kind of metamorphosis. Horemheb smiled at the father’s bewilderment. The comte would never know that the persona he faced was no longer his son. In his place sat an ancient incarnation filled with dark power. After the duel, in the pain and rage of his impending death, Victor Gaspard had bargained his soul for the agony’s relief and in exchange had allowed another soul entry. The father focused intently on his son’s eyes. Now, old and angry eyes.
Once pharaoh of all Egypt, Horemheb had used every resource of Victor’s body to maintain its life and in the end, had drained most of his own core life force for the body to cling to its current incarnation. Although Victor’s body had shriveled, the malevolence of the soul now commanding it had increased a hundredfold. His face was a misshapen swollen caricature of a human. The mustache and scraggly beard were grown to cover scar tissue, but they failed. Much as the iron filament within a compass must seek true north, the eye was drawn to the angry lines where the skin had healed into blood-red ripples of shiny flesh. The silence stretched.
“A Lettre de Cachet has been issued against René Gilbert. Should Gilbert attempt to return to France, it will be as a traitor to the crown,” said François.
“I need him to return.” Horemheb spoke in a low coughing voice; Victor’s continuous screaming had damaged his vocal cords. “I want him here, alive.”
“Was that the reason you asked me to hold a funeral for you?”
“Partly.”
“In truth, after our failed attempts to kill him, I do not expect him to return. Were he to be so unwise, I do not believe agents of the crown capable of capturing him.” François reached for his wine glass.
“Then why invest in a Lettre de Cachet?”
“It will legitimize whatever we decide to do.”
“He will return to Bordeaux.” Horemheb rubbed his useless left arm.
“How can you know that?” The father studied Horemheb closely, as if trying to reconcile the undeniably powerful man seated before him with the purposeless child he knew to be his son.
“We are tied together and we are not finished, yet. He will return to me, and now that I know who he is, I will be ready.”
Horemheb saw another time, another place, and he smiled, as much as the torn muscles of his face allowed.
The emotional temperature in the room dropped. Gaspard shifted in his seat. For the first time in a life filled with position and power, Horemheb watched as unease animated the muscles of the older man’s face. François Gaspard was afraid.
