INTERVIEW with Lorenzo Petruzziello
Tell us what THE LOVE FOOL is about.
It’s about a guy who moves to Rome for an opportunity with a PR firm. He is assigned his first client – a Scandinavian model / TV chef – managing her publicity, appearances and press. During all this, he is contacted by Emily – a girl from his past – and asks if to visit him. This brings Alex to reflect on their relationship – which takes place in the 90s. Emily comes to visit – leaving Alex to juggle his past and the paparazzi.
Why did you choose Rome for the setting?
Well, Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Who wouldn’t want to read a story set in Rome? Believing that most people would, I wanted to make Rome not only the setting, but part of the story. I try to describe the spaces as much as I could to allow the reader the feeling as if they fell into the story.
You describe some wonderful dishes as well. Both Italian and some Scandinavian. Why Scandinavian?
Pernille – Alex’s client and the celebrity in the story – is a model / TV chef from Denmark. Her role is a nod to Fellini’s La Dolce Vita – in which the celebrity was a Swedish movie star.
What is your favorite dish? And is it mentioned in THE LOVE FOOL?
My favorite dish is Bucatini all’Amatriciana and I have to have it every time I’m in Rome. That or Carbonara. As for Danish food… I have to say it’s a simple frikadeller or smørrebr ød – the open faced sandwich.
Your website thelovefool.com includes a book club section with a recipe. Tell us more about that.
Yes, I have a book club resources section that includes meeting tips, discussion questions and my recipe for Spaghetti alla Carbonara; which is a dish that’s involved in one of the most romantic/non-romantic scenes in THE LOVE FOOL.
Would you say THE LOVE FOOL is a romance novel? What sets it apart?
THE LOVE FOOL is definitely along the lines of a romantic comedy, but with a non-romantic theme. It’s written in a male point of view; however it is written to relate to all walks of life. My hope is that the story allows people to relate and reflect on the dumb things we do for love.
