After a rough semester, Professor Lyssa Pennington just wants to post her grades and join her husband, Kyle, in Cornwall for Christmas. First, though, she’s expected to host an elegant dinner for Emile Duval, the soon-to-be Chair of Languages at Tompkins College.
Too bad no one told Lyssa murder is on the menu. And, by the way, Emile Duval is an imposter.
Who is he really? And who wanted him dead? Without those answers, the Penningtons can kiss Christmas in Cornwall goodbye.
Excerpt:

Rand Cunningham rose. “A toast,” he announced. “We thank Emile for submitting to our two days of grilling. There will be no more of that tonight. We’re here to enjoy a stress-free meal of delicious food and drink arranged by our tireless hostess, Dr. Lyssa Pennington.” He bestowed a wink on her before saluting the candidate with a glass of Riesling. The consensus was Duval truly was an exceptional match for the position and would be a shining star for Tompkins College. If you believed the grapevine, he’d even dazzled the provost.
Emile was lifting his glass. Had he already done the ritual—sniffing the cork, swirling a smidgeon in the glass and then sloshing it around in his mouth—and she’d missed it? Maybe he’d skipped it, since the bottle had been open before it was brought to the table. Come to think of it, there was no cork on the table near him, nor had she seen a cork lying on the counter in the kitchen.
The candidate held his wineglass aloft, made eye contact with each person around the table, and tipped the glass back for a sizable swallow. He then smoothly followed his first gulp with a small sip and made a face.
Jeanne Marie, to his right, reached for the bottle of red wine and offered to pour for him, since he obviously didn’t think much of his Beaujolais.
Whatever witty response Emile hadd been about to make died on his lips. His glass jerked out of his hand, flipped onto the linen tablecloth, and spilled its contents. His face contorted in obvious agony, before a convulsion sent his body crashing to the floor.
Lyssa sprang to her feet and stood rooted in terror at her end of the table.

About the Author

C. T. Collier was born to solve logic puzzles, wear tweed, and drink Earl Grey tea. Her professional experience in cutthroat high tech and backstabbing higher education gave her endless opportunity to study intrigue. Add to that her longtime love of mysteries, and it’s no wonder she writes academic mysteries that draw inspiration from traditional whodunits. Her setting is entirely fictional: Tompkins College is no college and any college, and Tompkins Falls is a blend of several Finger Lakes towns, including her hometown, Seneca Falls, NY (AKA Bedford Falls from It’s a Wonderful Life).
