Interview with E.J. Simon
What advice would you give budding writers?
First read and write a lot. Second, get a copy of Stephen King’s On Writing, it’s an excellent primer on writing, keeping it simple and clear. Third, take some courses in the genre that you plan to write in. You need to know some of the rules before you can break them.
How long have you been writing?
At least seven years. My undergraduate and graduate degrees are in Journalism and Communication, so writing and communication – of some sort - has always been a passion of mine.
Do you write every day?
Yes, even if I don’t write a lot, I make sure I write each day so that I continue to make progress and stay in the story. It can be hard to leave a manuscript for a few days and then return. I find it better to be sure I do something each day that keeps me in the game and engaged in the story.
Your books are set in Queens, NY, Paris, Rome, Saint-Tropez and so many other interesting places. Have you ever been to most of them?
I’ve been to each location – and even each restaurant or hotel, assuming it’s real in the first place, which almost all of them are. If the scene takes place in a restaurant, I’ve probably even eaten the meal that’s described.
What is writing schedule?
Since I also work full time, I get up at 5:30 in the morning, and write for an hour or two and then maybe too at the end of the day. When I travel, however, I love to write on an airplane, especially on a long flight to Europe. There’s something very different about being inside an insulated cabin, up in the air, no phones, no refrigerators, just a hushed silence up in the sky, it rewires your brain and opens up your imagination. I guess it should, you’re flying, you’re 30,000 feet up in the air. I also love to write in hotel rooms, particularly if they’re comfortable ones in interesting places, like Paris or Florence. I try and reflect these actual experiences, too, in my writing.
Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?
If it’s in the early morning, I love having a cup of freshly made hot coffee. With that in hand and my computer in front of me, open to a blank Word page, it’s like, okay, let’s create a new world today. It’s exhilarating!
In today’s tech savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?
I generally do almost all of my writing on my desktop or laptop. Occasionally, if I’m inspired somewhere where it’s inconvenient or impractical to use my computer, at the beach, for example, I might use a pad and pen and then type it into my computer. I use Word. It’s simple and flexible.
In your book, one of your characters describes artificial intelligence as the greatest threat to organized religion ....what did he mean?
Alex Nicholas is duplicated on a computer after a breakthrough in AI, just before he is murdered. As a result, he has become immortal, living proof that one can exist – virtually, in cyberspace – forever. Life after death. Up until this point, the church or organized religions, have had a monopoly on immortality, it’s their secret sauce, to many, the source of its power. This isn’t totally science fiction anymore. The late Stephen Hawking predicted that AI will soon be able to reproduce a human being on a computer – including his or her conscience and consciousness. Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple has said the same thing. It’s a Brave New World.
