The Cold War gets cozy in this retro-cozy spy caper set in 1967, a year of music, miniskirts—and murder! Actress Noelle McNabb works at the Country Christmas Family Fun Park in Yuletide, Indiana, but she longs for the bright lights of Hollywood.Real-life drama comes her way when a stranger with a fatal gunshot wound stumbles across her doorstep. When she attempts to finds the man’s murderer, Noelle encounters a super-secret spy agency, SIAMESE (Special Intelligence Apparatus for Midwest Enemy Surveillance and Espionage). SIAMESE recruits Noelle on a quest to find missing microdots under the guidance of a street-wise agent, Destiny King. As Noelle goes undercover in a cheesy nightclub and faces the enemy in late-night chases, she uncovers family secrets and finds her moral values put to the test. Along with her pet cat, Ceebee, and the kooky residents of Yuletide, Noelle discovers it takes a village to catch a killer.

Interview with Sally Carpenter
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
I’m in control of the story. I have a tight plot that is well structured and to verve off the path would be chaos. I learn something new about the characters as I write their dialogue, but no great surprises pop up.
When I start I know the antagonist and the climax, so it’s a just a matter of building to that point.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
It’s a fun, quick, beach read for someone who wants to sit back, relax and be entertained. There’s a message (the protagonist is at odds with what she has to do and her moral values), but the reader isn’t hit over the head with any profound insights. It’s entertaining even if the reader doesn‘t pick up on any deeper meaning. It’s a step back in time to the 1960s for readers who want to escape to a simpler time without modern technology and social media rants.
Have you written any other books that are not published?
Several, but that was years ago and it’s probably good that none of them saw the light of day because they were not well written. I had high hopes for one novel, a YA action/adventure/SF novel I wrote during the Harry Potter craze. I doubt that modern youth would want to read it, as the YA trend seems to be “end of the world” fiction, which doesn’t interest me.
Pen or type writer or computer?
First drafts are always written with pen on the back of scratch paper (I prefer Pilot retractable pens in black or blue ink). Then I type it up, editing a little as I go. All further edits are made on the computer. I can’t get creative with a computer; it feels too much like an office job. With paper I can relax on the sofa and the words flow. I scribble away, cross out and add stuff. On a computer I stop to correct errors. The link between brain and hand works better for me with pen than with a keyboard.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I don’t write traditional cozies with recipes and crafts, but I hope readers will give me a chance. My books have no graphic sex, violence, gore or language. “Flower Power Fatality” has a pet cat and a quirky hometown built with a Christmas theme. I also write the Sandy Fairfax retro-cozy series about a 38-year-old former teen idol who finds that making a comeback can be murder. All my books are published by Cozy Cat Press. My first book, “The Baffled Beatlemaniac Caper,” will be back in print soon through CCP.
