Chapter 1

Our group assembled at the dock—silence billowed in the air. We girls were thinking the same thing, with anxious expressions evident on our faces. Our tempt guys stirred quietly. Enrique shifted from foot to foot, standing right behind Melody. Zion was now in the back of our group and continued to look at Cali. I didn’t let her know of his presence. With how his eyes seared her, it was obvious he was in love, and that only created more problems for Cali. Zion didn’t approach her, which seemed to be a struggle for him. He raked a hand through his uniquely pecan-colored hair, his eyes never leaving her.
Dom was at the front. He bored holes into the sand with his eyes. One thing was for certain, this was going to be a long journey home.
Once we boarded, they directed us straight to our suites. Being a coward was a new concept to me, but I was glad for a delay. All thirty-six participants of the Trials were told to be in the commons area within thirty minutes. Well, thirty-four, since Kimi was dead, and who knew if Deidrick was still alive. I couldn’t hide forever. I commanded myself to push those dreary thoughts aside before I went into a panic.
Glimpsing myself in the mirror, I continued to take deep breaths. I hadn’t seen Tobias in six weeks. I should be thrilled about seeing him. But I’d never been more frightened, consumed with terror that he might not want to salvage our relationship. Pull it together, tramp! I chastised myself. Only one way to see how this ended—time to face the music.
