Book Description:
Eric Martin is desperate to forget his past, one that almost cost him his future.
Working in Paris as deputy head of a bank's internal security department, Eric notices a high-speed trader's uncanny ability to predict extremely profitable trades. Even though there's nothing illegal about the activity, he knows the trader's success is more than just luck.
But, no one believes him. Armed only with a handful of data and a powerful instinct, Eric searches for the mysterious trader on his own. He suspects that a predictive algorithm has fallen into the wrong hands.
Eric sets off for Istanbul to find answers promised to him by an informant. He finds an unlikely ally in Interpol agent Stephanie Brule. With Interpol wanting him back in Paris and out of the way, Eric's quest is also hampered by the sudden appearance of his ex-lover, a boss he's not sure he can trust, and a terrorist who always seems one step ahead.
Will Eric put an end, once and for all, to the nightmare that began when he accepted a job that was too good to be true? Or will his need for revenge and justice lead him deeper into a treacherous world he has no way of escaping?

Interview with Author Georges Benay
Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?
Interestingly, it's my protagonist that gives me the most trouble. You see, Eric Martin is a successful investment banker so it goes without saying that he is driven, borderline arrogant, used to winning at high end poker, and a tad too confident in his abilities to resolve any issue that is thrown at him. The problem is that, in my novels, Eric finds himself in life-threatening situations that he is ill equipped to deal with. My dilemma with Eric as a character is that I really want him to succeed but I do not want him to turn into this super hero a la James Bond where he suddenly takes the mantle of superman. There's a line in the book that best describes my challenge with my protagonist: "You're a bloody banker, for God's sake. The last time I checked, banking was not a contact sport!"
On the other hand all my female characters come to me easily. They are typically, strong, highly intelligent, and intuitive. I love them all.
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
I wish I knew. I wish I had a deep well full of ideas or a set formula I could go to whenever I need a new story. My ideas come to me in waves at odd moments; while driving my car, in the middle of the night, or even in the middle of a tennis match! Inspiration is like creativity, without notice it takes you where it wants you to go. You just have to be ready to seize the moment with a computer or a piece of paper.
If you could put yourself as a character in your book, who would you be?
No one really. That will take all the fun out of it. I write fiction. If I wanted to write about myself, I guess I'd write a memoir.
How long have you been writing?
All my life would be the right answer if you consider, essays, poetry, business proposals, reports and speeches as part of my writing life experience. When it comes to short stories and novels, the bug hit me hard about ten years ago and I've not stopped writing since then.
What is your next project?
Another Eric Martin novel. I'd like to finish writing the Nomad trilogy. Does anyone out there have any ideas for a new adventure for our hero? If you do please send them to me. I'd be most grateful.
What is the last great book you've read?
The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's so dark, so scary, and oh so poetic.
If you’re a mom writer, how do you balance your time?
That's an easy one. I'm a dad!
What is your writing schedule
I try to write a chapter a week. At least that's my objective, but I don't always achieve it. The subject matter, my mood at the time of writing, and my daily preoccupations have a definite influence of how much writing I get down in a week.

I read recently that successful bankers, business types etc. display certain psychotic traits such as the lack of empathy, difficulty in social situations, need for control, egotism. Any comments Georges?
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is that we can find these "psychotic traits" in all walks of life. The successful athlete, the famous artist, the great novelist, the movie star have all one thing in common--- an unyielding belief in their abilities, otherwise they will not succeed in their endeavors. Unfortunately most investment bankers can be borderline arrogant about their abilities and that may make them less likely to be liked. My protagonist,Eric Martin is an investment banker who possesses many fine qualities and I'll let you find out for yourself what they are.
DeleteThank you Georges & best of luck with the release!
DeleteSounds like a good read.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an exciting book and series. My foster mother was from Morocco and I'm curious to know if you've visited there yourself, either through your work as an international banker or photographer?
ReplyDeleteExcellent post! I really enjoyed reading the interview and learning more about this book! This book sounds like such an interesting and intriguing read! Looking forward to checking it out!
