Interview with Kelly Smith
1. In your book you write about two failed relationships and you expose a lot about yourself in this book. While writing you were worried about the next person you date knowing so much about your private life?
While writing this book, I was convinced that I would never date again. Writing this book was a part of my healing process, and I had not fully healed until after the book was released. So when I was writing, I was not even thinking about that, but maybe I should have been.
2 .How has your dating life been after a toxic relationship?
In a word, rough. But then after getting the hang of it and learning what I need to know, it got better. I found the more I healed the better it got. While healing I tried to date too soon and it ended up not so fun. But when I was ready, truly ready, I began to really enjoy it.
When meeting the family and friends of someone you may be dating, are you worried about them knowing so much about you before you even meet them?
Yes. Very much so. I had no idea I would feel this way, but once someone finds out you wrote a book, the friend and family like to ask questions and some have read the book.
When a woman meets a man who says he used to be abusive, women are instructed to run away from that man, do you think it is different if a woman was the abuser in a previous relationship? Should a man run from a woman who was abusive?
I actually have had this conversation with a friend as I began to date. I was explaining to her how scary it was to have someone's mom read my book and then possibly not want him to be with me because I was abusive. And she said yeah but you are not like that anymore so who cares. I asked her if a man told me he used to be abusive but he isn't anymore what would you say and her response was to run. So I just looked at her and she made the connection. So I can't say if a man or a woman should run, maybe just take it slow and see how it goes. People can change.
Are you dating now?
I have met the most amazing man ever. If it were not for my recovery program and the work I did to heal, I would have never been able to attract such an awesome guy.
