A high-society murder. A spirited lady detective. Can she out-class the killer before an innocent person takes the fall?
London, 1923. Olive Belgrave needs a job. Despite her aristocratic upbringing, she’s penniless. Determined to support herself, she jumps at an unconventional job—looking into the background of her cousin’s fiancĂ©, Alfred. He burst into the upper crust world of London’s high society, but his answers to questions about his past are decidedly vague.
Before Olive can gather more than the basics, a murder occurs at a posh party. Suddenly, every Bright Young Person in attendance is a suspect, and Olive must race to find the culprit because a sly murderer is determined to make sure Olive’s first case is her last.
Murder at Archly Manor is the first in the High Society Lady Detective series of charming historical cozy mysteries. Character interview with Sara Rosett

1. What is your greatest fear?

Being dependent on someone else. I’d hate that. That question strikes close to home. I’m in a bit of a precarious situation right now, financially speaking, and doing my best to make my own way in the world. It’s a challenge, but I don’t want to rely on anyone else—not Father and certainly not my new stepmother, Sonia!

2. Do you bite your fingernails? Do you have any bad habits?

A lady never bites her fingernails, so, no, I don’t do that. I do have other struggles. I’m intuitive and tend to go with my instincts. Sometimes that doesn’t work out so well. But, in fairness, I do have to say my assumptions are often spot-on. I also have a weakness for sweets and tend to run late. Fortunately, being fashionably late isn’t considered bad form. Otherwise, I’d be sunk socially!

3. Are you married? Are you divorced? How many times have you been married?

Good heavens, I’m barely in my twenties. I know some people consider a woman in her mid- to late-twenties as past their prime, but it’s a new decade and attitudes are changing. It’s too bad my step-mother’s attitude toward unmarried young women hasn’t altered. She thinks my solitary goal in life should be marriage. I disagree. Of course I want to marry, but I want to marry for love, not out of obligation or—worse—desperation. No, I’d rather earn my own crust until the right chap comes along.

4. What people do you most admire?

I admire people who go after what they want and work at their goals until they get it.

5. What are your Strongest/weakest character traits?

I’m loyal. I’ll stick by you when things get tough . . . even if it comes to a murder investigation! I’m optimistic. I can always see the bright side. And believe me, when you’re a young woman crisscrossing London in search of a job, you’d better be able to find some positive things to focus on. It can be quite grim in the city. I can be a bit too enthusiastic and get carried away. I don’t spend a lot of time contemplating options or outcomes. I make a decision and go. At least that way, I’m moving forward!
