Anastasia Pollack’s son Alex is dating Sophie Lambert, the new kid in town. For their community service project, the high school seniors have chosen to raise money for the county food bank. Anastasia taps her craft industry contacts to donate materials for the students to make Christmas ornaments they’ll sell at the town’s annual Holiday Crafts Fair.
At the fair Anastasia meets Sophie’s father, Shane Lambert, who strikes her as a man with secrets. She also notices a woman eavesdropping on their conversation. Later that evening when the woman turns up dead, Sophie’s father is arrested for her murder.
Alex and Sophie beg Anastasia to find the real killer, but Anastasia has had her fill of dead bodies. She’s also not convinced of Shane’s innocence. Besides, she’s promised younger son Nick she’ll stop risking her life. But how can she say no to Alex?

Interview with Lois Winston

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

I really enjoyed creating a story that featured Anastasia’s teenage sons. In many of the books in the series Alex and Nick are mostly in the background or only in a few scenes. This time the story develops from a community service project Alex has to take part in to fulfill a graduation requirement.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book who would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I’d choose to spend the day with Anastasia, and because I’ve dumped so much hardship on her, I’d treat her to a spa day, a 5-star lunch and dinner, and her Broadway show of choice. It’s the least I could do under the circumstances. After all, she was living a normal middle-class life before I stepped in and messed everything up.

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

That’s a really hard question to answer. I’d love to have written the Harry Potter books because who wouldn’t want J.K. Rowling’s success and bank account? But if I had to choose a single book, it would probably be William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury. It’s an American classic that’s a mainstay of high school and college English literature curriculums and would be an incredible legacy.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Most of my characters spring from my imagination with the exception of one: Anastasia’s communist mother-in-law is based on my own communist mother-in-law. To any reader who thinks Lucille is too over-the-top, you obviously never met Louise Winston.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

I’m not someone who always knew she’d grow up to write novels. The idea never occurred to me until I had a dream one night. I’m not someone who usually remembers her dreams, so this was really weird. And weirder still, the dream unfolded over several days, like chapters in a book. I finally decided to write the dream down, and the next thing I knew, I had written 50,000 words. That story, after several years and many revisions, became Love, Lies and a Double Shot of Deception, the second book I sold
