Obsessive Addiction by K.L. Donn

Have you ever heard the sound of your life ending? A cell door slamming shut is the best way to describe it.
I killed a man. A bad man.
One who deserved far more than what I gave him.
He looked at her when she was mine.
He touched her when she was mine.
He broke her when she was mine.
I’m getting out on a technicality.
Now, I’ll get to make her mine.
She’ll cry my name each night instead of his.
She’ll feel my pleasure instead of his pain.
I am Crux Malcolm and it’s my turn to get what’s coming to me…
Farren Hallewell is my addiction and I’m obsessed.

 Excerpt:
“What in the fuck?” I’m sitting in the fucking tree outside her room in the middle of the night because my brothers were right. I have that fucking look in my eye. I have the obsession. I won’t apologize for it either.
Music blares from a room down the hall from Farren’s and I’m pissed that her mother can’t hear her cries of pain.
Jumping from the tree and onto the small balcony outside Farren’s room, it doesn’t take much to jimmy the lock open and climb through her window. The first thing I notice is the massive dresser in front of her door and my anger spikes to an inferno.
Her quiet plea’s for mercy stop me in my tracks from tracking down the danger and instead climbing into her bed. Pulling her body into mine, I wrap myself around her shivering frame and whisper in her ear.
“I’ve got you pretty bird. Ain’t no one going to hurt you.” I brush the hair back from her face, sweat has it plastered to her skin.
“I don’t want to anymore.” I know she’s still sleeping, so she’s not talking to me and I wish I could kill Warner all over again. She begged and cried for him to stop and he wouldn’t.
“I killed him Farren. He’s dead.” I murmur, burying my face in her neck, kissing her lightly.
“Crux?” Her soft voice makes me smile.
“I’m here bird. I’ll always be here.” I soothe.
“You saved me.” She whispers sleepily, and I feel her body collapse in relief and hopefully safety.
I need to get this girl figured out. She can’t fucking be here when Leslie doesn’t give two shits about her. I need her with me. I need her safe.
I always knew I was addicted. For years, I fucking knew.
Now I know I’ve become obsessed. The thought of her not being in my embrace guts me in a way I can’t explain. My life is hers. I’ll do anything for her. Even if it’s not what she wants.

 Interview with K.L. Donn
What do you owe the real people upon whom you base your characters?
A hug for making my characters come  to life, good or bad in the story.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
I have 3 unpublished and 4 started.

What does literary success look like to you?
Readers talking about my books, recommending them, leaving reviews saying I made them feel something.

What’s the best way to market your books?
Word of mouth.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I typically do anywhere between 3 + hours per book for research. I do it as I need to, rather than before, because I don’t always know how the scenes will play out.

Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
No.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
Describing an erection and how it feels.

How long were you a part-time writer before you became a full-time one?
I’ve always been a full-time writer.

How many hours a day do you write?
Sometimes none, sometimes 8 or more.

What period of your life do you find you write about most often? (child, teenager, young adult)
Young adult.

What did you edit out of this book?
A real time abuse scene.

Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?
No.

What are the ethics of writing about historical figures?
To speak of them in a flattering manner.

How do you select the names of your characters?
Usually my PA, Kaci, or a baby name website. I like unique names so I’m very picky about what I choose.

If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?
I have no idea. Haha

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
Not always. I have readers send them to me and I always try to share them.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
Sometimes.

What was your hardest scene to write?
There’s a scene in Kennedy’s Redemption where she’s sitting on a rock wall over the ocean contemplating what would happen if she fell in the water with the rough waves. Imagining her death.

Do you Google yourself?
Nooooooo.

What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?
Ice cream.

What are your favorite literary journals?
I’m not sure I’ve read any.

What is your favorite childhood book?
Goosebumps

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
Finding a cover to match the emotion of the words inside the book.

Does your family support your career as a writer?
Yes.

If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?
Pay more attention in English classes.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
A full length (60k or more) can take me 2-3 months sometimes. A novella can be as short as a month.

Do you believe in writer’s block?
Yes.
