From award-winning author Ann Bennett, comes a heart-breaking story of love and loss set in World War 2 Burma.

In 1980, Edith Mayhew, proprietor of the Tea Planter’s Club in Calcutta, is preparing to sell up after years of decline. She thinks back to 1942 when her sister Betty vanished having fled over the mountains from Burma to Assam to escape the Japanese invasion. Whilst packing, Edith comes across some letters which may hold clues to Betty’s mysterious disappearance.

The discovery propels Edith on an epic journey to Assam, where she is forced to face devastating secrets of love and betrayal from the war years.

"Edith looked again at Betty’s photograph; at her smile, her dancing eyes, and felt that familiar pang of guilt she always got when looking at that picture.
‘I’m so sorry, Betty. I let you down. I know that and I regret it deeply,’ she whispered, but no amount of apology could wipe away the guilt of decades, or the nagging feeling that perhaps the true reason Betty hadn’t returned was because she’d known all along about Edith’s betrayal."

Ann Bennett was born in a small village in Northamptonshire and now lives in Surrey. Her first book, A Daughter's Quest, originally published as Bamboo Heart, was inspired by her father’s experience as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway. The Planter's Wife (originally published as Bamboo Island) A Daughter's Promise and The Homecoming, (formerly Bamboo Road) are also about WW2 in South East Asia. The Tea Planter’s Club was inspired by a recent trip to India and further research into WW2 in Burma.

Ann is married with three grown up sons and works as a lawyer. For more details please visit www.bambooheart.co.uk
