BLURB:

Remembrance Day is just an excuse for vampires and humans to throw themselves a parade. They like to pretend they did us werewolves a favor. But I guess it's not all bad. I do get cheap booze, live in an underground lunar city, which some would find cool, and I am employed. Sejanus Industries isn't a benevolent corporate ruler, but they're the devil I made a deal with. My life is quiet and mostly non-violent but one message from my cousin could cause me to lose everything I've sacrificed for my peaceful life.

Excerpt Three:

I pulled up to SpecialTea and pounded on the door. Giancarlo answered and I tried to walk past him, but he stuck an arm out to block me.

 “Huevon, you want me to break it again?”

He scowled and puffed up his chest. “I’m not drunk this time, bitch. If you—”

I punched him in the throat. The follow-up kick to his chest threw him backward, smashing a table to pieces when he fell on it. Two goons raced out of the back room with guns drawn. I hopped over Giancarlo and intercepted them at the counter.

 My vision swam with gold and my muscles pulsed

with energy. Time slowed down. The first goon on the left swung with his pistol. I ducked under his arm and drove a fist under his ribcage into his liver. He gasped and doubled over. His gun clattered onto the floor. Goon Two aimed his weapon at me, but I kicked it out of his hand. He charged, drove his shoulder into my stomach, and picked me up. I wrapped my legs around his torso and snaked my forearm under his chin into a headlock right before he slammed my back into the wall. The taste of copper flooded my mouth.

Victor Arteaga is a writer of science fiction, fantasy, and paranormal stories. Though he’s always been an avid reader, his dream to be a writer was jump-started when he got sober in March of 2015. What began as an exercise to keep his sobriety billowed into a deep and unbridled passion to create. Interview with Victor Arteaga

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

One of my favorite is when Aless meets Rosa. It’s a scene that incorporates some of my best tension setting, nuanced character exploration, and progression without needing much to happen in terms of action. The two are sitting down for a cup of tea, but what’s going on under the surface is intense in a way that I don’t get to write often. I also love the scene where Aless meets the main antagonist of the story as well, but if I go too much into that I’ll spoil a fair bit.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Oh, that’s a tough one. Being in quarantine I’d probably say Nate. He owns a gym, I’m a powerlifter that hasn’t been able to go to workout for over a month haha. If we’re talking generally…gosh I don’t know. After having spent the last four years writing this I feel as though I’ve spent every day with all of them. Though, now that I really think on it I would hang out with Nova. She’s an astrophysicist who gets to explore space in a telescope built on the MOON! How friggin’ cool is that?? I would have a blast hanging with her, the angry Scot, and learn all about space and explore the solar system. That would be amazing. 

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

The one I wrote, hands down. There’s no telling how good my version of any book in history would have been. Likewise, all the books I’ve read influenced my storytelling in such unimaginable ways that Unrest wouldn’t be the book that it is without their stories.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Most of my characters have aspects of myself and people I know. Some characters are a combination of people and then there are a few that I’ve created wholesale with my imagination and maybe one or two that are based on historical people that I researched. Aless is based mostly on myself.

    
5. What made you want to become a writer?

The answer to this is in two-parts. I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was a child. I had a vivid imagination and as such loved to create stories. I used to draw and write comic books, write little stories here and there as most kids do. But the school system I went to, and I suspect most in general due to the time, were about testing, testing, testing, and not so much about fostering creativity. So, I put away my creativity, my pens, stories and went about being a rebellious youth.  

Fast-forward to about 5 years ago. I was in rehab for severe alcoholism and as a part of the treatment we had to write our life story, start to finish as it pertains to our addiction. By itself, that was a grueling, cathartic, excruciating exercise in self-reflection but our task wasn’t done there. We had to read it out loud to the group. When I finished telling my story many tears were shed (I cried at everyone’s story) and everyone said, “Victor, you should be a writer.” I didn’t think much of it at the time, but not much later a client I was working on said “Hey Victor, what would happen if you put a werewolf on the moon?” That was the spark that relit my imagination and led to this book.
