Excerpt Two:

In the Lake girls’ time – nineteen hundred and nine,
Many homes were connected by telephone line.
Neighbours had their own numbers – but the phone line was shared:
You could pick up and listen to all, if you dared.

Interview with Kelly McInenly

1. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story?
My Grandma Mill has the reins of all of the Little Milly stories… they are the tales of the adventures she and her five sisters had while growing up in the early 1900s without a mother or much money.

2. Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
Sick of sassy llamas, rainbow-vomiting unicorns and eye-rolling first-graders? Then Little Milly’s perfect balance of silly and sweet is for you and your young readers!

3. Have you written any other books that are not published?
I have three more Little Milly stories ready to go – Ene and the Ivy, Flo and the Fishermen and Milly and the Mail, as well as a more somber concept (Postcards From Heaven) about the girls’ three brothers who were killed on the frontlines after slipping into the military underage.

4. Pen or typewriter or computer?
My handwriting rivals any doctor’s, and I have not seen a typewriter since 8th grade typing class, so it is computer, hands down! My Mac lets me get things down as quickly as they come to mind, as well as access Google, photos and other sources of inspiration (including amazing DJ mixes on Apple podcasts) while I’m drafting and crafting.

5. Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Writing is not likely to be profitable for many, but I do believe it can be relaxing and joy-inducing for all… give it a try and encourage your kids to as well.
