What Were You Thinking?
By: Ann Everett
What inspired you to write this book isn’t a new question. I think most authors get asked that from time to time. For me, inspiration comes from all sorts of places, and even though, Chirp is my favorite story I’ve written so far, the idea didn’t happen the same as with my other books, which usually include an a-ha moment.
The title came first. I woke up one morning with the name on my mind and wanted to use it as a character’s nickname because I thought it would be unusual. Once I decided that then I had to have a reason for it. That led to her name—Wren. Then, I decided to let her love interest be the one to come up with Chirp, and again, I had to have a reason for that. That steered me toward it being a pivotal moment in the story for both of them, which meant, they needed to be in direct conflict until that point.
I could go on and list each step of how I got to the eventual storyline, but that would take way more words than you probably want to read.
In comparison, when I received the 2016 October edition of my electric co-op magazine, it had a picture of a lineman on the cover. He looked good enough to write about! That’s all it took for me to plot True.
