She looked towards Lawrence.

He softly studied her, and her cheeks warmed. The way he looked at her inferred he was equally moved by Mrs Hadley’s sadness. Esther looked away. He, too, was widowed. Had he and his wife once shared the same love that Grace Hadley spoke of?

Shamed by the jolt of jealousy that shot through her, Esther walked to stand behind a pillar that blocked Lawrence’s sight of her but gave her full view of Mrs Hadley. A familiar sense of unworthiness knotted Esther’s stomach. If Lawrence understood Grace Hadley’s words and sorrow, then, he too, must have known deep and meaningful love.

She would never be enough to compete with such a ghost. Would never be enough to be with a man who bore such longing for a person he’d lost. If she listened to her body and how it so treacherously reacted to Lawrence, her attraction to him would only end badly when the moment came that she’d inevitably held something of herself back.

She could not forgo everything she had built. Somehow, she had to find the strength to fight the temptation of Lawrence’s gaze and quash the yearning to see him again…to see his children again. The emotions he’d evoked in her proved her capable of feeling. Something she had doubted for so very long. Her meeting him had been worth that, at least.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:


Rachel lives with her husband and their two daughters in a small town near Bath in the UK. Since 2007, she has had several novels published by small US presses, eight books published by Harlequin Superromance (Templeton Cove Stories) and four Victorian romances with eKensington/Lyrical.

In January 2018, she signed a four-book deal with Aria Fiction for a new Edwardian series set in Bath’s finest department store. The first book, The Mistress of Pennington’s released July 2018 with book two coming February 2019.

Interview with Rachel Brimble
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
Ohh, there is so much I love about this book! I’ve wanted to write this story for a long time but couldn’t seem to find the right heroine until Esther Stanbury appeared in the previous book (The Mistress of Pennington’s). I always write my books so they can be read stand alone, but I knew Esther would be the star of A Rebel At Pennington’s.
I think my favourite part of the book is when Esther realises that, although she is a suffragist and active for the right for women to vote, she knows violence and militancy isn’t and, never will be, her way forward in the fight. She is conflicted for most of the book but when her realisation comes, it is about so much more than the vote. It’s a powerful chapter and one that will stay with me for a long time.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
Definitely Esther! She is ambitious, full of passion and love and wants to do all she can to help female empowerment. I love her so much! I’d love to sit in on one the suffragist meetings and then rally alongside Esther and her associates. Hopefully, we’d then enjoy a sumptuous afternoon tea to celebrate a victory – no matter how small!

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
I admire so many authors, but if I have to choose, I would say any book by Philippa Gregory. I am a huge fan of her work, especially her Tudor series, but I think it’s a single title of hers called A Respectable Trade that I wish I’d written. This book is one of my all-time favourites and is filled with love, intrigue, suspense as well as a lot of historical fact. A really great read!

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
Entirely my imagination – BUT, having said that, I think there is often something myself in every character I create. It’s very hard, as an author, not to reiterate something you need or want to say through your characters. Writing is a highly personal process and it’s inevitable something of the author bleeds into the characters. That’s what makes each book so unique.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

I was around the age eight or nine when I discovered Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven series. I was addicted and when I realised writing novels could be a job, I was determined to be a published writer one day. When I read my first Harlequin romance novel around the age of fourteen or fifteen, I knew I wanted to write romance.

Real life got in the way for years, but when my youngest daughter started school full-time in 2005, I had a ‘now or never’ moment and haven’t looked back. I am about to start novel number 24.
