BLURB:
SECRET FIRES
In the midst of the vast, windswept Texas plains stands a ranch wrested from the wilderness with blood, sweat and tears. It is the shining legacy of Thomas McBride to his five living heirs. But along with the fertile acres and herds of cattle, each will inherit a history of scandal, lies and hidden desire that threatens to burn out of control.
THE HALF-BREED
Chase knows he has no legitimate claim to the Circle M. After all, his father made it painfully clear he wants nothing to do with his bastard son or the Comanche girl he once took to his bed. But Chase has his own reasons for answering Tom McBride's deathbed summons. He has a job to do as a Texas Ranger, and a woman to protect—a woman whose sweet innocence gives him new faith that love born in the darkest night can face the dawn of all his tomorrows.

Excerpt Two:
Chase was ready for trouble and trouble was exactly what he got when he snared the would-be horse thief around the waist. The thief put up a fierce struggle, but only when Chase heard the scream did he realize he was dealing with a woman!
“Hold still!” he commanded.
Fighting with all her strength, it took Faith a moment to realize he’d spoken English. Only when she was slammed back against the solid, hard-muscled width of his chest and held pinned there, did she become aware that this was no ordinary renegade.
“Damn it woman! I said hold still!” Chase groundout, wondering how this golden-haired wildcat of a woman had ended up in his camp trying to steal his horse in the middle of the night.
He looked down at her as she finally stilled in his arms. Only now did he notice that her blouse was torn and her pale flesh was bared to his gaze. She was filthy and there were bruises evident upon her flesh. They were a silent testimony to abuse she’d suffered. He wondered who she was and what had happened to bring her to him.

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I love this whole book! It’s hard to pick one particular scene in Secret Fires: The Half-Breed, but since I have to ☺, I’ll say I like the opening scene the best. It sets the mood for the entire story and shows just what our hero, Chase McBride, has to deal with in his life as the half-breed, illegitimate son of rich rancher Tom McBride. As the story opens, Chase’s mother is dying and she asks him to get Tom and bring him to her so she can see him one last time. Chase has never met his father, but for his mother’s sake he goes to his father’s ranch to get him. Tom McBride is outraged that Chase has shown up at his ranch. He tells him he doesn’t care about Chase’s mother and throws him off the property, telling him never to return. By the time Chase gets back home, his mother has passed away. This shows us how strong Chase is, and he is one great hero!
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book who would it be? And what would you do during the day?
No matter which of my books I’d be asked this question about, it’s the hero I would want to spend time with. I love all of my heroes, and I wish they really did exist. ☺ As far as what I’d want to do with him if we were in Texas back in the 1880s, I guess just hang out and have fun!
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
Honestly, the first time I read that question the answer that popped in my head was—the Bible. That would be amazing. Fun-reading-wise, that’s a hard question. The book that influenced my writing career the most was The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss. It’s the book that inspired me to try to write a romance novel back in the early eighties. I will say that as a kid I loved Ben and Me and The Boxcar Children, and they’re still popular with children today.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My characters are all mine. Once I get the story started, the characters start talking to me in my head. It’s so much fun to be able to create your own world and make sure your characters end up living happily ever after. (It’s also great fun to be able to make men do what you want them to do, when you want them to do it! ☺)
5. What made you want to become a writer?
As a kid, I used to play with my cowboys and Indians and make up stories all the time. It’s just the way God made me. ☺ There are right-brainers our there and left-brainers, and I’m definitely a right-brainer. (Just ask my computer professor in college. Thank heaven I took that class pass/fail!) In the fifth grade I had to write my “autobiography,” and the last thing I had to put in it was what did I want to be when I grew up? I answered a teacher and a writer. Bless my teacher’s heart, she wrote on the page: “You can do both!” What an inspiration she was to me. Her name was Ms. Albrecht, and I’ve never forgotten her. My mom saved the autobiography, and I’ve still got it. ☺ I am very lucky to have been able to live my dream. I’ve been a published author since 1982. Wow! What a great career!
