Excerpt Two:

Connor pulled the linking rings back out of their velvet bag and began practicing with the engagement ring on them. “I may need your help, too.”

“With the trick?” She raised her eyebrows. “I’m not sure I’m the one—”

“Nonsense. You know how it works. You just have to catch it correctly.” He tossed the ring to her. She caught it neatly, but the engagement ring went flying.

“Damn.” She cursed softly. “I thought I could do that.”

“No, you weren’t sure. You said so.” He found the engagement ring and replaced it on the linking ring. He fixed her with a stern look. “Be certain.”

“Okay.” She shrugged, but she knew what he was talking about. Every movement in magic—or any showmanship, really—had to be done with certainty. No rethinking yourself or doubts allowed. The audience should never be aware that you might not know what you’re doing. And so she banished any doubts and looked at him expectantly.

“And don’t look at me like that.” He twirled the rings in the air, absently connecting and disconnecting them. She knew how it was done, but he’d gotten so good at it, she couldn’t catch him.

She laughed. “Why not?”

He paused in the act of juggling the rings, caught them and displayed them all connected with the engagement ring dangling at the bottom. “Because you make it hard for me to be certain.”

She tilted her head, wondering what he meant…

Interview with Michelle Garren Flye

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

I had to think about this for a bit, but I think my favorite part comes at the beginning when Connor’s being a bit too flirtatious and Carole lays down her ground rules. I like it for two main reasons. First, it shows that Carole may have been a victim in the past, but she’s well prepared to protect herself now. Second, Connor’s response sets him up to be the perfect foil for her. He’s a good guy and he respects her laying down rules from the beginning, but he refuses to be lumped in with the people who actually need those rules.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book who would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Walt. He’s my favorite character thus far in the series. He’s kind and courteous, loves kids and he sails. That’s what we’d do. We’d find a boat and go sailing all day. And maybe he could teach me a few of his magic tricks. Have to keep it platonic, though, because he’s totally in love with Sabrina and I’m not going to mess with that.

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

This is a bit of a trick question, isn’t it? I mean, I could say The Bible because it’s the most successful book ever written, or I could say Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone because then I’d be rich. But really, what I’d like to be is the author of a book that really made a difference. So, maybe, The Great Gatsby?

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

My characters are always from my imagination, but there are usually bits and pieces that I recognize from reality. For instance, Connor is a conglomeration of many different movie stars—I’m fairly certain I recognize some Johnny Depp and Chris Hemsworth and even a bit of Tom Cruise in him. I didn’t start out intending to do that, though. I started out to create a compelling character who could be in the movies, and I guess I used bits of real people to do that.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

I’ve just kind of always been a writer. I wrote short stories when I was about seven years old and my mom said, hey, maybe you’ll be an author when you grow up. And I figured if it involved making up stories and writing them down, I was okay with that. I never made a decision to become a writer, I just wrote. And I still do.
