Excerpt Two:
Dressed in similar sweats to what he’d worn the morning before, his body bathed in gleaming sweat, Ky pummeled one of the suspended bags. His hands were wrapped with white gauze, his arms toned and taunt as he executed each strike with perfect precision and technique.
Gemma stopped on the final riser and watched him batter the bag, fists moving with swift, defined actions, the jabs fast and hard, the recoils even faster.
Shoulders raised, elbows tight, hands balled and up blocking his cheeks and jaw line, he threw a right jab, left, then two rights, all aimed high, and a final forward thrust left, lower on the bag, his knees bending to give him balance.
Gemma wanted to race back to her room, grab her camera and capture the scene before her.
Kyros Pappandreos was the epitome, the very definition of a natural born fighter. Distinctly male, uniquely the warrior, his body moved with the grace of a panther, the stealth of a tiger stalking its prey, and the accuracy of a cobra striking. There was something so sensual, so primal, so animalistic about him, she knew she had to photograph him just this way.
She’d capture him in slow motion first, his tight fist connecting with his target, the sweat of exertion flying from his forehead. Then, she’d move to rapid fire, the image blurring with the speed of his hits. A pugilist, enigmatic, tough, and hard bodied, the bulging muscles and corded sinew in his arms distended with his action, outlined and bathed in the shiny moisture pouring from him.
Ky repeated the moves in the same series of strikes three more times before dropping his hands to his thighs.
He swiped at his forehead with the back of his hand, his breathing hard, but not labored, and turned.

Interview with Peggy Jaeger
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why? The moment when Gemma starts to see Ky as something other than an arrogant, cold FBI agent.
Gemma is being held in a safe house by FBI Special Agent Kyros Pappandeos and his partner John Winters. One morning, Gemma decides to work out in the basement gym. She rises early, thinking everyone else is asleep. As she walks down the steps to the basement, she sees Ky working a punching bag suspended from the ceiling. In that moment, she begins to see that his external, cool and composed persona houses a hotbed of emotions. As she watches him, unobserved, she sees the coiled tension filtering through his body as he lets out all his feelings and demons on the bag. Even though he is fully clothed, Gemma sees him standing naked before her – metaphorically ( he is clothed, after all!) and is entranced with the dichotomy of him. Cool, logical and emotionally contained on the outside; hot, feral, and blistering on this inside. I loved this scene because it proves the adage to me that you can’t know what a book is about by just looking at its cover. You need to read the pages, get between the lines, to know the true story.
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I’d really like to spend a day with Gemma’s friend Rick Bannerman. He was a sniper when he was in the military and he’s the one who taught Gemma how to shoot. I’d love to go out to a shooting range for the day with him and have him instruct me in the nuances of gun play.
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
Wow! What a question!!! Hands down and without any other thoughts it would be PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. That book set the bar for the next 300 years of romance writing.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
While I may take a characteristic or a turn of a phrase from a family member or a friend every now and then, all my people are cooked up in my brain.
5. What made you want to become a writer?
I don’t necessarily think I had a choice in the matter. At 6 I was given an old fashioned key and lock diary. Instead of writing about myself - because I considered myself completely boring – I started writing fictional stories in it. The stories were all about a lonely, only child who was overweight and had divorced parents she didn’t see much of. It’s funny when I think about it now, but I actually was writing about myself back them, only using third person to do so! What are those old saws? Write what you know? And, Art imitates life? Yeah. That was me back then. I don’t think I ever had a choice in whether I wanted to become a writer or not. I just….was.
Thanks so much for having me today! It was a pleasure.

DeleteEnjoyed your interview today. Just saw a reader's question that sparked a question I want to ask: some authors have written a villain in a book only to redeem him as a hero in a subsequent book. I think I've only read 1 book where this was done and it was difficult to forget he was a nasty in a previous book life. Is this a trope you think you might like to try at some point in the future?
ReplyDeleteI saw it done once as well and by a fab author who did it well. The underlying thought is that every villain is one because of some past issue. If you can fix the issue or explain it fully to the reader, it may be possible to redeem him/her to a hero. I/m thinking about it for the future........when I'm a better writer!
DeleteThe book sounds intriguing, thanks for hosting.
