Book Description:

Five days. It took me five days to crawl out from the bowels of the rubble. I emerged from my tomb into a world nothing more than a wasteland; propelled into chaos where everyone has all but lost their humanity.

My name is Phoenix, and the world as I knew it ended that day; the day the human race was nearly eradicated, and my journey home began.

Interview with Dave Heron

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

Everywhere. I have around five stories lined up for the future that popped into my head from random day-to-day events. My debut novel, From the Ash, was heavily influenced by the movie Mad Max. I remember leaving the theater after watching it, thinking to myself “I want to create something like that.” The wheels started spinning and a year later, From the Ash was born.

How did you do research for your book?

A lot of Google and Google Maps. Getting a “realistic” feel to a fiction story, I feel, is something that must be done right. For example, my main protagonist—Phoenix—begins in California in the prologue. With the first chapter jumping ahead to a year later, she is traveling up the border of Texas and Oklahoma. I took the distance between these two points, calculated the miles, and asked myself “Walking, would she end up here in a year?” This was a process I did when anything needed this authenticity.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

Nope. I currently work at a bank on the graveyard shift (is it time to retire yet?), which, funny enough, is where I get most of my writing done. Shh, don’t tell my boss!

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

Oh man, great question. Hmm, if I could be an apparition, I would love to spend a day in Roman times at the height of their empire. I find that time period fascinating.

What is your next project?

Currently, I’m working on From the Ash: II, which is coming along slowly but surely. It’s tough to find time to sit down and write with a full-time job, two young boys, and a plethora of other things on my plate. Still, I wouldn’t change a single thing about it. It’s such a privilege being a dad!
