Excerpt Two:

“And the story of this jewel comes from some of the scriptures of India going back over a thousand years. And it’s a myth, of course, it’s a legend, told in visual terms that would be memorable to the listener. There was a devout man who worshipped the Sun, and the Sun god appeared to him one day as he was praying at the beach. But he couldn’t see him for all his brilliance. So the god took a jewel off of his neck, which was the source of his outward splendor, and placed it on the man in honor of his devotion. No one recognized the man as he walked home, as the magnificence of the enormous ruby gave him an aura of vibrancy and blinded everyone around him. It was said that the jewel would bring protection to the land and prosperity to its people. And it was soon magically producing eight bags of gold a day. Lord Krishna suggested that the man share it with his fellows, and give the jewel to their ruler. But he would have none of it. The man’s brother wore it one day and was killed in a freak accident. I think he fell from a tree and was strangled by the necklace, just like that!” Evangeline snapped her fingers. “What a disturbing image. And, as you might suspect, the bad luck didn’t end there, and the man was eventually murdered and the jewel stolen. And after the thief made off with the ruby, and Krishna left the earth, the city no longer had protection, and was submerged into the sea. Quite a tale!”

    1. Hi Joseph, One of my favorites is E.M. Forster's Howard's End, which to me captures the metaphysical world in that things sometimes work out other than the way we planned, there are larger forces at work. Forster also wrote a book about the time he spent in India which was very helpful background information for my book. Good luck on the giveaway!
