There is a place between death and life where the souls of our loved ones dwell, trapped or perhaps assigned.  I know, for I have seen it.

There was much left unsaid between us and perhaps that is why I first saw the shade of my father.  What can be said between a King who barters his daughter and a daughter who seeks to overthrow her father?  It was the same with us in that place as it had been in life and the ghost of my father did not speak.

Mother was there, too, a pale remnant of the Queen whose poor tortured heart failed her on the night Tumagis defeated the men of Alcinia at Landsfel.

The one person I did not see was Sergius.  Of course, my husband had not worshipped the Goddess of Alcinia but his own Omani gods, yet I do not think that was the reason.  In my heart, I believe he had gone to Arianya.  I was the wife of his middle years and the one who gave him children.  She was the wife of his youth…his first love.  Even at his graveside, I had whispered to her spirit to care for him, and I think that she came to Sergius Magistri.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Beginning a prize-winning career in poetry, Miriam carried her love of the written word into seventeen novels to date.  Her offerings range from contemporary and historical fantasy to science fiction and historical fiction, always with a romantic flavoring.  Her original novel The King’s Daughter—now part of The Chronicles of Alcinia—was written in Ireland, her second home.  When in the U.S., she resides on a small horse farm in Pennsylvania with a collection of rescue animals.

Interview with Miriam Newman

Where do you get inspiration for your stories? Usually straight out of my subconscious, whether they emerge in the form of dreams, mental visions, a line of poetry or prose or just a daydream.  It’s an involuntary process.  If I sat down and deliberately tried to write a book, I doubt I could do it.  

It’s almost like a spiritual experience…something I simply don’t understand.

How did you do research for your book?  Mainly I write fantasy and that’s the beauty of it.  I can use what I know from my own reading of history, fantasy, myth and legend to create a world that doesn’t need verification—since it is my own.

Do you have another profession besides writing?  Technically, I am retired from psychiatric social services, but I’ve also dabbled in self employment and currently do some municipal work both paid and volunteer.  It’s another way of helping people.  I’ve learned an incredible amount about land use and preservation that appeals to the part of me that reveres nature and untamed spaces.

 
If you could go back in time, where would you go?  The Medieval era, but could I take indoor plumbing with me?  I don’t glorify it; it was an extremely tough time to be alive.  Yet there is something ultimately fascinating about it and so many aspects of our current civilization go back to it:  our legal systems and rights, art and architecture, the code of chivalry, many of our religious holidays and observances.  We owe a great deal to those people.

What is your next project?  Right now I am releasing another book, Dark Child, which is a retelling of the ancient Irish myth called Deirdre of the Shadows.  It’s a novella, but I think I would like to expand it into a full-length novel someday.  That, of course, really WILL require some research about ancient Ireland.
