Ignoring the dozens of unread social media notifications, he put his phone down and rolled his neck side to side closing his eyes for a brief moment. His brothers’ conversation about the upcoming football season buzzed in his ears mingling with the chatter of their neighboring patrons but there was one sound that couldn’t be ignored.
A voice. And it was one that he knew well.
Opening his eyes he searched the room in hopes to see the source of that honey coated timbre, a face that had been burned into his heart long ago. He wondered if he was hearing things, if all his suddenly resurfacing thoughts had caused him to conjure her up. Coming to his feet, he stood using his height to his advantage. His gaze was pulled like a magnet to her just as it always had been. Her beauty still rendered him speechless as his pulse sped up, feeling nerves he hadn’t felt since high school.
Except they weren’t in high school anymore, and a whole lot had happened since the last time he’d talked to her. Time passes, things change, and people did too. But for the first time in years they were in the same place at the same time and Jayden was not about to miss the opportunity.
EXCERPT #2
Turning on her heel she moved towards the table stopping short as her eye caught sight of the one face she didn’t plan on seeing. It was impossible not to notice him. He had always been tall, but now his presence took up so much space. It called to her, demanding that she pay attention to him.
Those olive-green eyes of his were the same ones she had tried and failed to forget. Her gaze drifted from his face to the dark swirling ink that covered the hazelnut skin of his left arm, starting at his wrist and disappearing under the sleeve of his tee shirt. The tattoos were new but the way he looked at her wasn’t.
The memories shifted into those emotions she had been trying her hardest not to feel, the all too familiar ache growing heavy in her chest, leaving her hands trembling. They both stood frozen in that moment as memories spilled forth from the corners of her mind, filling the gap between them.
She willed herself to move, taking one purposeful step towards him, then another. She did that until she was standing right in front of him. She stood close enough that the smell of his freshly washed skin filled her nose.
He smiled brightly just before her arm reached out and doused him with the pitcher of beer.
“Get out of my restaurant, Jayden Williams.”
