Interview with Cate Beauman
As a kid did you write or make up stories?
Actually, I didn’t. When I was a child I hated to read and I dreaded storytelling assignments. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I found my love for reading. On a whim in 2010, I decided to try putting pen to paper (or fingers to laptop keys) and write novels. Luckily, it worked out well. I can’t imagine ever doing anything else.
Where does most of your Character inspiration come from?
I always have my plots in mind before my characters start taking shape in my imagination. Usually I do a little research into the story I want to share, then I create the men and women who will compliment the storyline well.
Do some qualities of your characters come from real people?
Writers are constant observers. I’m always watching the way people interact or respond in everyday life situations. I never set out to base my characters on anyone I know personally. I want my heroes and heroines to be unique individuals who grow as the story unfolds. I think it’s vital to make my characters as real as possible with their faults and virtues just like any other typical human being. That’s what makes characters so beloved. They must come alive in a reader’s mind.
What was the inspiration for your book?
It’s no secret that I’m a crime television junkie (although books, magazines, and newspaper articles about all things sinister work for me too). When I’m looking for storytelling inspiration, I grab a pen and paper and plunk myself in front of the TV. At some point last fall, I searched through Netflix’s offerings and found a docuseries on the mafia. I’m almost certain I watched the entire six hours in one sitting. Simply put, I was fascinated by the violence and complexities of La Cosa Nostra (the five mafia families of New York) and their ability to evade law enforcement for decades. By the time I finished the last episode, I had dozens of pages of notes and knew my next novel had to involve a mafia-type storyline.
What is your favorite spot to write?
I have a hard time finding my groove if I’m not sitting in my plush living room loveseat. It’s a rare day when I’m not snuggled up on the comfy cushions with my legs propped up on the coffee table.
What advice would you give budding writers?
I would say to write everyday and to never forget your passion for telling a good story. It’s easy to get caught up in deadlines or what other people think your novels should be based on industry standards. If you’re passionate about what you write and focus on sharing an excellent adventure, that will take you farther than anything else.

ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny that you weren't a willing reader when young. I was a very early reader as Mum was a teacher so I had 1-2-1 for a couple of years till my sister came along. She was a talker and a doer, rather than a reader but now gets through books at a phenomenal rate!
