From Amazon bestsellers list author Roger L. Liles comes the second volume
of his Cold War trilogy—THE COLD WAR BEGINS. The setting is
war-ravaged Berlin in late 1946. Spies from both sides begin to move with
relative ease throughout a Germany occupied by British, French, American and
Russian military forces. Kurt Altschuler, our hero, soon becomes one of
them.
While working behind enemy lines as an OSS agent in France during World War
II, Kurt learns that intelligence collection involves both exhilarating and
dangerous encounters with the enemy. He relished every moment he spent as
part of the vanguard confronting the Nazis.
That war has been over for 18 months when he is offered a job as a CIA
deep-cover agent in the devastated and divided city of Berlin. He jumps at
the opportunity, but is concerned that his guise as an Associated Press News
Agency reporter will offer little action. He need not worry. Soon, he is
working undercover, deep inside of Russian-controlled southeastern Germany.
Eventually, KGB agents waylay him and tear his car and luggage apart. His
chauffeur is beaten. He is threatened with prison, torture and death.
Enter Erica Hoffmann, a very attractive, aspiring East German archeology
student. Any relationship between an undercover CIA agent and an East German
woman is strictly forbidden; she might be a KGB or Stasi agent or operative.
But he cannot help himself—he has fallen hard for her. Kurt strives
assiduously to maintain their tempestuous, star-crossed relationship.
Eventually, Kurt works to counter the efforts of Russian and East German
spies, especially a mole who is devastating Western Intelligence assets
throughout Europe. He also must work to identify and expose enemy spies who
have penetrated the very fabric of the West German government and society.
He frequently observes to others that: “the spy business is like knife
fighting in a dark closet; you know you’re going to be cut up, you
just don’t know how bad.”

About the Author

Roger L. Liles decided he had to earn a living after a BA and graduate
studies in Modern European History. He went back to school and eventually
earned an MS in Engineering from the University of Southern California in
1970.
In the 1960s, he served as an Air Force Signals Intelligence Officer in
Turkey and Germany and eventually lived in Europe for a total of eight
years. He worked in the military electronics field for forty years—his
main function was to translate engineering jargon into understandable
English and communicate it to senior decision-makers in the
government.
Now retired after working for forty years as a senior engineering manager
and consultant with a number of aerospace companies, he spends his days
writing. His first novel, which was published in late 2018 was titled The
Berlin Tunnel—A Cold War Thriller. His second novel The Cold War
Begins was published in late 2020 and is the second volume in his planned
The Cold War Trilogy. This trilogy is based on extensive research into
Berlin during the spy-versus-spy era which followed World War II and his
personal experience while living and working in Europe. He is in the process
of writing its third volume of the trilogy which will be titled The Berlin
Tunnel—Another Crisis and takes the story into 1962 and the era of the
Cuban Missile Crisis.

Book Description:

A reformed killer, a dragon agent, and a lone shifter must work together to investigate four abductions…

I've always had a close relationship with death.

Six years ago, I was the Renegade, the Wolf of Eden, terrorizing the streets of a small town in Mississippi. Now, after a plea deal that saved my life, I work for the police as a consultant and unofficial cop.

Obsidian Moon, the Underworlder police agency, isn't doing anything about the disappearances of four college women. It falls to my shoulders while I'm stressing over my college assignments and the new transfer who thinks testing my control is a great pasttime.

Then there's him. The mystery shifter who danced with me at a club and reminds me of home.  And he seems to be more than just a random stranger who walked up to an ex-murderer and danced rather than fight.

But I have bigger concerns than two sexy men on my tail as a stream of darkness hangs over Paradise Grove.

The opening of a new series, A Stream of Darkness, will have you guessing at every turn and turning the pages to learn more.

Excerpt:

I sidestepped
the ramming bull—well, technically, he was a werewolf—and watched with growing
amusement as he slammed into the bar.
As one of the
more prominent clubs on the Quad, Mirage was filled to the brim with writhing
bodies hypnotized by the pulsing music that resounded from the DJ’s throne. The
walls thrummed with the powerful beats and siren acoustics coaxed people into
drowning themselves in alcohol. Flashing lights of gold and sapphire, of ruby
and amethyst, of emerald and topaz, cast colorful shadows on the clubbers who
watched the growing brawl in amusement and fear.
I cocked my head
to the side and ebony-gray curls swayed to the left as mint eyes burned like a
raging pyre as I watched him stumble to his feet. A Cheshire Cat smirk pulled
my lips back over elongated canines that gleamed under the colorful neon
lights. “Olé!”
The bar, a mix
of black quartz and wood, won this round as it remained unharmed. The werewolf
shook his head, the tightly braided red curls bouncing lightly against the left
side of his skull. His jade eyes were glazed in confusion and there were flecks
of pale yellow from the wolf peering through his gaze as his temper grew
shorter. He held a hand to his side and attempted to take a deep breath only to
hiss quietly. Though wolves, like most Underworlders, could heal themselves
through either magic or blood, it took time to fix fractured bones. His
linebacker build didn’t help matters either as he held out another hand to grip
the bar to steady himself.
He snarled, a
rumbling sound that probably caused him more pain than he let on. Our audience
murmured as the less than sober patrons realized that the scar dominating my
face wasn’t just any old scar from a run-in gone awry. Flowing from my left jaw
to the bridge of my nose, the puckered, jagged scar was as much a moniker as a
reminder of my “sin.”
“Mind givin’ me
another shot, Izzy?” I drawled, my gaze never once leaving the wolf in front of
me as we circled each other.
Izzy was already
working on my drink before the last word left my mouth. Her hands flashed after
working for years as a bartender on the fast-paced Quad, and she wasn’t at all
bothered by the brawl in front of her. “I should be cutting you off, Luce, but
since alcohol doesn’t effect you—what the hell, right?”
Pink eyes
remained amused as she watched the crowd around us groan while money exchanged
hands. She had her long, straight platinum locks pulled into a ponytail as two
square strips caressed the sides of her sharp cheeks. Placing the shot glass on
the tabletop, she placed a fifty-dollar bill beside it with a good-natured
grumble.
I chuckled, and
the redheaded wolf took the momentary distraction as a chance to tackle me.
Sidestepping him, I placed my hands on his back—barely a brush of my
fingertips—and slammed my knee into his abdomen. The crunch of bone and the
wheeze of air as a rib punctured his lung reached my ears, and my glittering
eyes narrowed as he collapsed at my feet with a groan. Either he was truly a
newbie with fighting a petite woman like me, or he was attacking with emotion rather
than logical reasoning.
As my father
would say, he was fighting for his pride and not for survival.
Heading to the
bar to collect my shot, I tossed it back with a hearty sigh as the burn slid
down my throat. Without me asking, Izzy refilled my glass, and I repeated the
action before slamming the shot down on the bar as stumbling steps reached my
ears over the roar of the music and drunken crowd. Sighing, I glanced over a
narrow shoulder to see the wolf clutching his side as blood dripped from his
bottom lip. He just would not accept defeat, no matter how much bigger a
predator I was.
“Look,
sourpuss,” I adjusted the fingerless gloves on my hands and rolled the sleeves
of my leather jacket to my elbows. Pulling my thick, ebony curls behind me, I
continued, “I’d hate to kill your pride in front of all these people, but I’ll
gladly do it if you’re raring for a good ol’ fight.”

Glaring at me,
he clenched his teeth at the calm indifference in my voice as I was not at all
intimidated by his hulking form or the flecks of gold in his eyes. He towered
over my five-two frame and I looked like a sixteen-year-old girl with a blunt
mouth that got me into trouble, but I wasn’t joking around this time.

Avery Kilpatrick was born in Flowood, Mississippi, in April 1996. An alumnus of Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, Avery graduated with a Bachelor’s in English. She also worked on the student-run newspaper, The Delta Statement, during her four-year career at Delta State as copy-editor and Editor-in-Chief.

Interview with Avery Kilpatrick
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
I have to say that my characters kinda follow my lead, but they also do whatever the hell they want most of the time. If our relationship was a status, I’d say it would be complicated.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
It’s not every day you find a book about a badass heroine with a criminal history—a serial killer-type history, mind you. A Stream of Darkness is a murder mystery tale woven with snarky comments, drinking, and sexy men that will have you wanting more and guessing at every turn. Not to mention, there’s a large dose of the supernatural with werewolves, dragons, and more along with a whole new species thrown into the mix! You’ll have to read to find out!
Have you written any other books that are not published?
Yes, I’ve written several in the past—my first completed manuscript was when I just turned thirteen and decided that I wanted to write the story ideas down. I’ve finished the second book of the Crymsen Crescent series, and I’m currently working on a third book in a different, new series also.
Pen or type writer or computer?
I’m a hybrid—I like to write my initial thoughts down onto paper to get the words flowing before I switch to my laptop.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Thank you so much to everyone who buys this novel! Ever since I was thirteen, I’d dreamed of becoming a published author. This is seriously a unique experience and I’m thankful to everyone who has given A Stream of Darkness a chance despite being a new author. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Sinocare new model Blood pressure monitor

I have high blood pressure so I check myself regularly. I need a a good monitor that is accurate. I have been using this monitor from Sinocare for about a week now and have had no problems at all. When I first got it I check my blood pressure with my old monitor and then with this one and they were exact.

A couple of the features are it talks to you. It tells you to remain seated and not to talk. When it is done it tells you your results. This is awesome for someone who cannot see very well. It also has a logging system built in. You can go back through and track your results for your personal use or to inform your health care professional. It has a nice velcro arm cuff that is comfortable on my arm. IT does not scratch or dig into my skin. There is a clear drawing on the arm cuff to show you where the tube needs to be to get accurate results.

This does come with the 4 AAA batteries needed to get started. They are folded up in the arm cuff, so you have to look for them. So as soon as this is delivered it is ready to plug the arm cuff into the rotating hole on the side of the machine, insert the batteries and you are ready to go.

Hotec 4 pieces Set Basting Brushes Silicone Heat Resistant

I am very impressed with this set of 4 colorful silicone basting brushed by Hotec. I have used them with barbecue sauce and with melted garlic butter, and they worked great with both. My set came with a purple, yellow, aqua, and lime green brush. The brushes are made of silicone. The handle is stiff so not sure if it is metal, wood, or plastic on the inside. The brushes are about 8 1/2 inches long and about 1 1/3 inches wide. They are dishwasher safe.

The brushes are Temperature Resistant from -104℉ to 660℉ (-40℃ to 315℃). These are made of 1 piece so you don't have to worry about bristles falling out or the bristle head falling off. I do have other brushes that the heads start to fall off after several uses. These will not. There are 3 rows of bristles so they actually hold a lot of sauce in them. They are also non stick so clean up is easy whether you put them in the dishwasher or hand wash.

I love my set and am thinking about buy another set and making a gift basket for each of my daughters and adding one of the brushes to each basket.
