Speaking With the Spirits of the Old Southwest by Dan Baldwin

4*
I love ghost books and this one is not only about ghosts but is about real ghosts. Dan Baldwin takes us on a journey through Ghost Towns to contact and interact with real ghosts of miners, outlaws, and pioneers of the Southwest United States.

I love how he gives us a bit of history about each place visited in the book. I like how they communicate with the spirits. They mainly use a pendulum. I have a pendulum and have used it many times over the years with results. So I know you can communicate with one.

He does get a little long winded when it comes to telling us how they investigate and it does get a bit redundant when he says it over again at each place they visit. But other then that I really enjoyed the book and will be looking for more books by Dan Baldwin.

Big Book of Weekend Beading by Jean Power

This is a great book for everyone, beginners and seasoned beaders as well. The first part of the book explains beading in full. Everything from tools, types, tips, materials and more. Then you get over 30 projects with step by step easy to follow instructions. The projects in the book are great for jewelry, clothing, and more. All of the projects are made to be complete over a weekend.

I love all of the different beading projects. Some are made from string and small beads some are large beads and wire. The book is great to make projects as listed or you can even add your own twists to the project. These projects are great for making and giving as gifts as well.

Real Life Dinners by Rachel Hollis

In this day and age it seems we are always on the go. Some days thinking about dinner can be that straw that broke the camels back. This cookbook is perfect for not only those night but with any night. The recipes are quick and easy in the book. There are no real gourmet dinners  but they can taste that way. Flipping through the book I didn't notice a lot of recipes I had never heard of but that's ok too, it can remind me of some things I had not cooked in a while.

These recipes are easy enough that older kids, teens, and even my husband could cook them with no problem. The ingredients listed are easily found in grocery stores. I also noticed that if you have a small family or very large these recipes are easily cut in half or doubled, so you can make enough for everyone. There are pictures too!!

Thrax (Angelbound Origins #4)
by
Christina Bauer
Genre: YA Supernatural
Audiobook Release Date: May 18th 2018
Monster House Books

Summary:
"I’m blown away by the intricate and magical world that Christina Bauer has created.” - SolaFide Publishing

Myla Lewis has married Prince Lincoln, and now they’re expecting! All the after-realms rejoice. Myla should be happy too, but she has a serious problem.
The day after their honeymoon ended, Myla’s real husband disappeared.

The man who’s sharing her bed is an imposter.

Myla tries explaining about “Evil Lincoln,” but no one will listen. The reason? People think that Myla’s supernatural pregnancy is making her cray cray. Mostly because that’s what Evil Lincoln is telling everyone, and that man’s a great liar. What a creep.

There’s no way Myla will take this lying down, though.
She’s going to rescue her man, and she has a pretty good idea where he’s being held. With her best friend, Cissy, along to help, Myla sneaks off to Earth. All she has to do is blend in with the humans, avoid Evil Lincoln, and find her real man before the baby arrives. How hard can it be?
”Bauer’s writing is really good, easy to read, interesting, and engrossing.” - Quite the Novel Idea

Perfect for readers who love angels, devils, and demons but want a fresh take on their related fairy tales, myths, and legends. This series combines fierce females, paranormal romance and urban/contemporary fantasy. Enjoy!

My review:
5*
I am a huge fan of Christina Bauer. I love her books and audio books. Christina narrates her own audiobooks and I just love listening to her voice. She does an excellent job with all of the characters in the book.

Thrax is book 4 in her Angelbound Origins series. I have really enjoyed this series. I have listened to all 4 books in the series and cannot wait for book 5. I have really enjoyed following Myla from punk teenager to becoming the great Scalla, being Queen, and now a Wife and Mommy. I cannot wait to see where else Christina will take Myla. This is a great series. You do need to start with book 1 to get a true feel for the series.

In Thrax Myla and Lincoln are still on their honeymoon. Myla's igni have been screaming in her head so loud she cannot understand what message they are trying to get to her. Finally she hears "Man in the Mirror". Myla is not sure what this means.

Lincoln has been kidnapped and a clone has been left in his place. Everyone in the kingdom except Myla thinks it is the real Lincoln. It is up to Myla to travel to Earth and save Lincoln. When she arrives she realizes she will also be saving the under realm and earth as well.

About the Author

Christina Bauer thinks that fantasy books are like bacon: they just make life better. All of which is why she writes romance novels that feature demons, dragons, wizards, witches, elves, elementals, and a bunch of random stuff that she brainstorms while riding the Boston T. Oh, and she includes lots of humor and kick-ass chicks, too.

Christina graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School with BA’s in English along with Television, Radio, and Film Production. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby.

Excerpts:

The Persephane Pendrake Chronicles:

Book One - The Cimaruta

Dark Attack:

A crack of light, surrounded by black, billowing smoke filled the area in front of Persephane’s window. Angelica jumped up, shoved Persy behind her, while folding Persy’s hand closed over her Cimaruta.
In seconds, a female shape, all in black, formed.
“Melanthios!” yelled Angelica. “How dare you…” She scowled and started to raise her wand -
Snap! Blue light filled the room, Angelica fell on her side to the floor. Persy’s face crunched with fury, she leapt over her Mom, holding the Cimaruta straight-armed at Melanthios.
Melanthios swung her wand to point at Persy and smirked. “Why, niece, how lovely to finally meet you. I’ve been scouring the earth for that amulet. Should have figured my miscreant sister had it.”
“Disarm,” screamed Persy, having drawn out her wand.
Melanthios easily swooped out of the way of the casting, coming back with, “Fixatious.” Persy was not about to get frozen in place, so Melanthios could grab her Cimaruta. Not happening. Not today.
Persy dropped to the floor, rolled away from Melanthios, but the casting caught her lower left leg, which now dragged on the ground.
Melanthios’s mouth twitched up on the right as she moved in for the snatch.
She didn’t see the green and turquoise, foot long vortex form behind her head. As it rose, the whirring became loud and louder. “Stopiare!” The maiming curse. Melanthios dropped like a stone to the floor, her body faded to a ghostly hue and vanished.
Benson appeared out of the vortex, fluttered like leaf onto Persy’s lap.
“Benson,” she cried. “Benson. Are you ok?”
Slowly his large composite eyes refocused. “Oy. That took it out of me, Perse. But, yeah, yeah. I think I’m good.”
Persy gently laid him on a cushion and went to her Mom, who was struggling to sit. “Mom?”
“Hey, my darling. I’m good. De-fogging,” Angelica gave a small smile.
Persephane reached for her Mom to give her hand a supportive squeeze, then the air around her shimmered. “What…?”
It was as if she was watching the whole scene again. The flash of blue, Melanthios, her Mom falling and Benson, but this time, Melanthios turned in time and cast the Death curse. “Terminata!”
Benson’s vortex vanished. A candle snuffed out. He fell to the floor, motionless. Persy screamed. She was back in her room, her time and Benson was fine on the pillow.
“What, Persy?” asked Angelica.
“I saw…I saw…I, I.”
Benson flew over, landing on her hand. “What, love?”
Persy’s eyes flicked down at Benson. “You were dead. She killed you.”

Book Two - The Cauldron Of Ceridwen

“Should we have a peek?”
“Well, seeing as we’re here,” replied Thad, with a wry grin.
They slipped inside the room, closing the door behind them. Darson found a desk lamp on the table on the diaz and turned it on. It illuminated the room just enough to see, but not call attention to them by flooding the space under the door.
“Now what?” asked Darson. “How or where would it be hidden?”
“Well, obviously, with magic. Let’s do an energy search.”
“Right.”
They closed their eyes and put their hands out in front of them, slowly turning to run a general check over the room. Nothing.
“Ok, let’s try the ceiling and floor, then go close to each wall. It may be really well covered and we need to get closer to pick it up,” said Thad.
“Right.”
Thad gave Darson a sideways glance. “Not done this much, have you?”
“Can’t. Told you that.”
“Right.”
They slowly pointed their palms over the ceiling and then the floor. Nothing.
“Fine,” said Thad. “Let’s check the walls closely.
They started at one corner and walked very slowly along the wall. About halfway along the second wall, Thad picked up a small, but persistent vibration. It was as if you’d loosely cupped a small dragonfly in your hands and it kept beating it’s wings.
“ ‘Alo, ‘alo…what ‘ave we ‘ere then?” remarked Thad, sounding very like Benson.
“I’ll grab a candle. We need to be able to see this better,” said Darson.
He lit it close to the wall. Still, they couldn’t see any seam or evidence that something opened there.
They both ran their hands over the wall, sensing the vibration, but unable to detect anyway to get to it.
“Ok, let’s get serious. Keep the veil up and hold your purple crystal. I’m going to peel some magic back.” Thad reached into the back of his jeans, pulled out his wand and said, “Aperios.” A small bright blue light shone from the tip of his wand. Energy waves appeared over a space of about one foot by one foot on the wall. The waves diminished and a small door was revealed. Thad lifted a small brass latch and pulled. The door opened and inside it was lined in black velvet. In the centre was a scroll, about eight inches in length. Thad put his wand back, and extracted the scroll.
Darson came up behind him, looking over Thad’s shoulder as he unwound the scroll. Both of them read for a few minutes, then Darson commented, “Huh? This is crazy”.
“Indeed. Obviously a code,” Thad narrowed his eyes, hoping things would be more clear. Nope.
They stared at the scroll for another few minutes when Darson took in a sharp breath and said, “Wait! I think I’ve seen something like this before. We need to get back to my Grandfather’s books.”

Book Three: Lapis Draconis

Hayden sighed. “Oh, for cripes sake. Just do it already.” Persy glanced at her, turned and faced the sigil, put her hand on the middle ring and shoved.
A grinding, crunching noise started behind them. They all jumped and turned. Dust and grit was falling from the wall, and slowly a door became apparent, one side coming out toward the path and one falling into the wall. The door was on a centre support and laboriously turned a full one-eighty so they could see another corridor.
“Well, then,” said Persy. “Our next move, I’d say. Right?”
“Lead on, McDuff,” said Thad. “We’ve come this far.”
They entered the new pathway and checked out the walls.
“Well, this is interesting,” said Hayden, her head switching from side to side. Persy followed her lead. “Indeed. Six doors on each side, each with a moon over it.”
“Yeah,” said Darson. “And each with a different animal sign on it’s door, why’s that?”
“Dunno,” said Thad.
Sniv stepped up and looked more closely at the doors. “These are the animals of the Chinese Zodiac or Sheng Xiao, and are based on a twelve year cycle. You’ve heard ‘this is the year of the tiger or rabbit’ and so on? That’s what people are referring to. It’s going to be important here.”
“Ok. Right.” Persy glanced at the walls beside the doors and ran her hand along them. “Look at these indents. Must be a hundred of them. There’s something quite pointy in each.” Thad, Sniv and Darson looked into one close to each of them.
Sniv sighed. “Spears. This hallway is booby-trapped. If we get this wrong, those will probably will be released. It’s common in Asia, in the protection of some sort of treasure.”
“Common in the West, too,” added Hayden. “I remember one of my Nan’s books going into all kinds of traps and dangers set up to protect important artifacts. Some are just plain lethal, like this one seems to be.” Rix’s eyes widened and her face flushed. This was not good.
“So we have to choose the correct door, or we’re shish kabobs?” asked Hayden. Sniv nodded solemnly.
“Well, it’s meant to be solved,” said Persy, tapping her index finger on her lip and scowling. “What do we know?”
Sniv cleared his throat. “The twelve signs in order are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.” Thad and Rix checked out each door. “Yup, that’s what’s here.”
“Then doesn’t it make sense, seeing as we’re here for a treasure for Carnifex, that the correct door would be the fifth? With the dragon on it?” said Persy, with her arms spread out.
Hayden shrugged her shoulders. “Best guess I can think of. I’d second the dragon door.”
Darson grinned. “Sounds good to me. What’ve we got to lose?” Rix swivelled her head toward him. “Only our hides, but hey, no big.”
Thad laughed and gave her a hug around the shoulders. “C’mon, we’ll be fine. It’s the only thing that fits.” He coaxed her down the hallway after Persy. They crowded in front of the fifth door. They activated their amulets.

Weaving

remote witch's hut…on her tiny piece of Ontario's Cambrian Shield"
…and indeed that's where the series began.

After
more than 3 decades as an alternative health care practitioner, I
finally managed to start devoting some serious time to my secret
love--fantasy fiction.

I've
always loved fantasy, magic and mythical kingdoms.  We
home-schooled our kids and lived on a 100 acre farm..which had about
twenty-five acres in forest.

We'd
make up stories and adventures..lots of fairies, witches, wizards,
etc.

Now,
all these years later, I've started on my nine-book, three trilogy
magical series...The Persephane Pendrake Chronicles and have released
Books 1, 2 and 3... The Cimaruta, The Cauldron of Ceridwen and Lapis

Excerpt:

Linda passed the empty tables by the tall windows when she felt her arm being tugged. Before she could react, she found herself being dragged through the open patio doors and onto the isolated garden path. She came face to face with the mighty Wolf and his trusted companion, Hayden. The grounds were deserted. Everyone had left the gardens, and she was all alone with the two wicked vampires.
Wolf glared at Hayden. “Please let go of her arm; we are not animals. We never force ourselves on women.”
“Chivalry among demons—I’m very impressed. Too bad your table manners and choice of dishes leave a lot to be desired,” Linda said. Her hatred of Wolf had just caused her to forget her low position in the food chain; she closed her mouth to stop herself from talking. In the future, she must remember that he was a vampire—the strongest one in the world—and that he could easily destroy her at any time.
Wolf didn’t seem the least bit focused on her. “I didn’t come here to play parlor games with you. I need you to convince Todd to join with us. He can never be human or will ever be accepted by them. He belongs with us. He must stick with his own kind.”
“He’s not like you in any way at all: he cares too deeply for people and is loyal to his friends. On the other hand, you and your kind enjoy killing too much and have no feelings whatsoever.”
“Todd will never be accepted by humans or by his own kind. He will be an outcast with nowhere to go. He must join with us.”
“Todd is human and will always be accepted by humans.”
“Let’s kill her now, boss. She’s going to be trouble. I could take her away and no one will ever see her again,” Hayden said, grabbing hold of her arm again.
Wolf strolled over to her with a wicked gleam surfacing in his eyes.
“I have a much better use for her in the future. When she finally comes to her senses, she’ll realize that she will be better off with a real vampire with limitless powers than with a pathetic human. She’ll learn about intoxicating love and passion—not the games that humans play that pale in comparison.
“Here comes the human. Let her go for now.”
Linda was horrified to find herself wrapped in Wolf’s strong, muscular arms. She became hypnotized by his black eyes and tempted by his deep voice. He seemed perfect in every way. She only wanted to be with him.
“I’ll be back for you.” Wolf held her tight against his body and whispered in her ear. “I love the way you stand up to me with your flashing blue eyes. Soon you’ll be mine, my beautiful ice queen.”
Linda couldn’t move her body. She was stuck in some kind of trance…she couldn’t leave, didn’t want to leave if given the choice. His voice soothed her and made her think of love, passion, and great need: a need that could be satisfied only by him with his expert hands and mouth. She knew that one day she was going to be with him, to be joined with him.
He lowered his mouth onto hers and drew her into a swirling haze of unexpected feelings and desires. His mouth fully covering hers introduced her to a new realm of pure pleasure. His powerful form enveloped her, making her feel feelings that were foreign and untried for her. She couldn’t get enough of him. Linda tentatively began touching his face and then his body with an eager and unrelenting hunger. She didn’t know what she needed, but she knew that she wanted and desired this beautiful man standing right before her. Her past life was washed out of her mind, never to be considered again. Linda begged him to take her with him tonight. In response, Wolf lifted her in his arms, as if she weighed nothing, and turned to leave the party. His beautiful face looked victorious and happy. His black eyes filled with passion. She hoped that it was because of her. He looked down into her small face and gave a hearty roar.
While Wolf carried her in his powerful arms, a dark shadow swooped out of the house and flew directly at them. Linda was knocked out of his arms, and Wolf was thrown across the patio.
She looked up to see who had attacked them. It was Todd, his eyes a deadly shade of green, standing there panting.
Linda backed away in horror. Todd’s eyes cleared and returned to their original dark color. Then he looked at her. “Don’t ever be afraid of me. I’m here to protect you.”
Then he was struck down by Wolf.

Book
2 releasing soon!!

I
have always loved to read. I grew up with Agatha Christie, Alistair
Maclean and so many other authors who filled my imagination with
intrigue and mystery. The TV show, Murder She Wrote, kept me
entertained when I was not reading late into the night.

Over
the years, my taste in books has expanded to include the supernatural
and paranormal genres as reflected in my selection of shows, such as
Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and The Originals.

My
first book, The Dead Game, is a paranormal suspense/mystery. It
brings fantasy and the surreal to the simple murder mystery. It has
dead bodies and suspects. However, it also has vampires, vampire
derivatives, and a touch of romance to spice up the mix.
