Excerpt One:

Vedie

We lie in bed on top of the sheets. Mateo’s on his belly; I’m on my side right next to him. We’re bare-assed and aren’t being shy about it. I trace the raised, puckered-up skin of his back scars with my finger. And he lets me.

We don’t say a thing, though. I figure these scars say it all. This man has suffered, and that’s all I need to know. But he suffered at the hands of somebody who didn’t have a reason. At least Marcus and Tyrone and Juan had a good reason for what they did to me—they think what I am is warped and twisted, and they wanted to fix me to be straight and narrow.

After about half an hour, Mateo flips over onto his back and stares up into my eyes. I want so bad for him to tell me what went down—how he got scars from his neck to his ass—but he doesn’t offer an explanation for it and keeps running a finger over the bruises on my throat. He says, “Joey hasn’t gotten what’s coming to him for what he did to you.”

“Did the asshole who did that shit to your back get what was coming to him?” I decide I might as well put myself out there, or I’m never going to learn one damn thing about the man beside me.

Immediately, Mateo starts sweating. His perfect cut body glazes over with a light sheen of moisture, even though he’s not pumping iron on his front porch. His breathing speeds up, too. But his eyes—the color of coffee when it’s swimming in cream—stay fixed on the ceiling instead of rolling back in his head. “Daniel’s dead, if that’s what you mean.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—one in law school, another a professional dancer, a third studying at Mia’s alma mater, Boston College, and the baby finally off to college. (Yes, the nest is empty.) She publishes LGBTQ fiction and romance when not editing National Honor Society essays, offering opinions on college and law school applications, helping to create dance bios, and reviewing English papers. Her husband of twenty-five years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about this, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of young people who are challenged by the circumstances of their lives and relationships. She has a great affinity for the tortured hero in literature, and as a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with tales of tortured heroes and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She has NineStar Press to thank for providing an alternate place to stash her stories.
