My review of Book 1 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs:
This is definitely a new spin on the old Fairy Tales I great up with. In this version We meet the magician who created Shraga the talking mirror, The talking mirror and learn more about the evil Step Mother Anagrola.
This is a grown up version of the story complete with 1 f-bomb. I love how everyone has attitude, even the mirror. At times the story is sad like when we see what the poor magician has become without his friend Shraga the mirror. My Favorite part was when Queen Anagrola was trying to kill Snow White, and how many times it took before she finally got it.
This is a great series but not for the kids.
My Review of Book 2 Cinderella
As a child I loved the story of Cinderella. As an adult I am so gad Reut Barak has come up with the adult version, I laughed through out the story. Instead of being meek little Cinderella, she is Nuts, which the book points out quite often. In this version the Stepmother and sisters were good and loved Cinderella or did they? Cinderella suffers from multiple allergies and keeps herself locked in the attic. The sisters go out to find help for her from a great sorceress, They run through just about every villain in ever fairy tale ever to get to her, now that's love.
This was a really fun version of Cinderella. The ending put me off just a little it seemed a little rushed and disconnected, but it was still a great story.
My Review of book 3 Red Riding Hood
Unlike the children's story Red's Grandmother is EVIL.. She enjoys scaring Red with wolf stories. Granny gives Red a Red cape n order to make her look ridiculous, not beautiful. Little did Granny know Red capes were going to be the newest fashion statement. Red suddenly has a lot of new friends who started calling her Red Riding Hood and thinks she a genius for foreseeing the fashion. She also becomes the most sought after bachelorette. And she is very smart. Red has it all at this point. Until the press found out about Grandma.
This was such a fun adult version of the story and my favorite of the 3 books, All 3 stories are short reads just like the children's books but way different. I personally would not read this series to the kids but I really enjoyed them. Reut Barak has a great imagination and has turned old favorites into new favorites for me.

Interview with Reut Barak
What made you want to become a writer?
Actually, it happened because of a friend's kid that I was babysitting a few years ago. I was telling her the story of Snow White, and suddenly I thought to myself, why not make it interesting - so I made Snow White ugly, and when she grew up, Snow White became regular looking, but very intelligent. Then we got to the dwarfs and we gave each of them a profession. The whole fairy tale became about talent and smarts. The kid loved it and wanted to hear it again and again. Then I thought, this could really work as an adult version too – so I started a new type of book. It works like an app and feels like someone is telling you a story. They are also a very quick read, a bit like a snack, something fun you read on the plane or waiting for the train. Kindle were very excited when they saw it for the first time!
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination? My characters are based on my own life experience and the people I meet. My hardest character to create so far was the Wolf from Red Riding Hood. He is inspired by 2 amazing men I met in my life, who were older and wiser and guided me. One of them is a hiking guide and man-of-the world and he encouraged me to write. I was so inspired by him and his view of life and I learned so much from his wisdom. The other was a mentor I had a couple of years ago, who was a pillar of strength in my eyes for how he deals with life’s challenges. Both Red and the Wolf lose their reputation because of things they didn't do. Red in my story is a celebrity, who loses her fame and her adventure and meeting the Wolf give her clarity and put her back on her feet.
If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day? I would meet the Wolf from Red Riding. I would go back to that night where he and Red have the midnight conversation into the dark. I have so many questions for him. Though he is based on people I have met, he's also based on so many myths and mysterious darkness, that come from a land of our dreams. I would just stay up till dawn and ask him about life, and romance and how he became such a symbol in our culture. Where did he come from? Where is he going? Then, I'll probably make him breakfast, served on a tablecloth made from a large red hood.
What is your next project? Hansel and Gretel. I can't wait to see my new cover with the chocolate house! A couple of weeks ago, I asked my readers on Facebook which Fairy Tale they would like to have next. 200,000 people interacted with the post and the winner by popular demand is Hansel and Gretel. I'm so happy. I love it to bits (I'm a big fan of chocolate!) I still have to think about how to write the witch. That fairy tale has many themes inside it, and lots to explore.
If you could go back in time, where would you go?I would go back to meet Rasputin. I always found his story to be a bit unbelievable, a little like a fairy tale. He was poisoned, but it didn't kill him, and he just asked for some wine. He was shot, but he just got up an attacked his shooter. Eventually he was drowned. He was also a sensation in his life, being the aspiration of the young women of the Russian court. There is so much mystery and legend around him, and it makes you wonder what he was really like

Doesn't riding a phoenix get you a little hot? Do you have to wear insulated underwear?
ReplyDeleteHi Kate,
DeleteThank you for this question. It's enlightening to know young people these days are still concerned with safety. There have been many unfortunate phoenix riding accidents in the past because of people who forgot their special insulated underwear, especially the iron socks. Best brand is North Face (they truly never stop exploring).
I hope this tip is helpful.

Gracious Reut, you must be ancient if you consider an almost 60-year old to be 'young'! Still it could be your lifestyle that accounts for it!

ReplyDeleteHI Joseph,
DeleteI think it was a lot of things. I speak about a great teacher at school who was encouraging, and telling a story to children did inspire the adult version too. It's also great authors that I look up to :)
