Interview with Alan Murphy
How did you come up with the name for the book?
Oh I’ve had the idea for this book in my head for so many years. And I’ve had the book title for a long, long time too. I just love the name. The book explores the world of fame and celebrity and it shows you what people in the spotlight are really like so, I guess in that way, it takes you beyond the spotlight and transports you into their world. I think you learn straight away from the title that it’s a showbiz book and a behind the scenes look at an industry that fascinates us all. When I told my publishers the name that I had in mind, they absolutely loved it and we decided to go with it straight away. It was less than a 30 second conversation. I think it’s a title that packs a punch.
Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
I love reading but unfortunately I don’t get as much time to read as I’d like. I love fantasy novels, things that take me away from reality. My favourite book of all time is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. I’m obsessed with The Chronicles of Narnia series and have read those books more times than I can remember. I love anything like that...The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc.
I also love celebrity autobiographies and I’m a huge tennis fan so anything to do with tennis.
Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
Noise! Definitely lots of noise, LOL! I never write at home. I don’t like my writing to feel like work so I always go to a nice cafe or restaurant and write there for hours at a time and eat great food and drink cup after cup of tea. I write better when I make it feel like it’s a day out almost. Plus, there’s lots of welcome interruptions when I write in public because I’m always bumping into friends of mine so it makes it more fun. Writing is one of my biggest passions so I’m always careful never to make it feel like a job or something that I have to do. Especially as I’ve written for so many magazines over the years and that was full of stress and red tape and ridiculously tight deadlines. I wanted this book to be different. I wrote it because I wanted to, not because I had to and I made sure to do it in my own way. It’s been my most enjoyable writing experience of my whole life. I loved every single second of it.
If you could choose one of your books to be made into a movie which would it be and why?
Haha, this is my first book so I’ll have to choose this one. But I think it’d definitely make for a very fun movie...the story of a small town boy from Ireland never giving up and traveling to Hollywood chasing his wildest dreams and getting to meet some of the world’s biggest stars. I live in a tiny town called Ballinrobe in Ireland with a population of around 1,500 people so it couldn’t be any further from the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown. It’d make for a pretty inspirational, feel-good movie, that’s for sure. And we could have lots of celeb cameos.
Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I could definitely only write one book at a time. I like to put all my effort and energy and enthusiasm into something when I’m doing it and I think it resulted in a book I’m so, so proud of. Beyond The Spotlight has been an absolute dream come true for me and I’m just blown away by the reaction to it. I’m also starting work on my second book right after Christmas and I’m very excited about that. I’m so blessed to have an amazing publishing house Book Hub that believes in everything I do and supports me all the way.
