Chance knew love once—a long time ago. She died when they were eighteen and the best of him died with her. Since then his work on a ranch in Montana has allowed him to keep his distance from people and from happiness. Eighteen years later, he may be ready to start living again—maybe. He’s watched all his friends find love and embark on the next stage of their lives. Part of him would like to do the same; part of him would rather cling to the past.

He’s hoping that a trip to the Oregon Coast, and a couple of weeks away from his normal life, might help him figure out how he can move forward and maybe even be happy.

It’s taken him eighteen years to get this point, but a chance encounter on the beach will make him want to figure it all out in just two weeks.

He’s come a long way, but can he really open his heart up to happiness—and to Hope?

Chance Encounter is the first of three books in A Chance and a Hope Series.

These are not standalone reads. In fact, when you get to the end of this story, you may be faced with a cliffhanger – or you may not. The choice is yours!

What do I mean? Well, when you reach the end of Chapter Twenty you’ll be left with a warm and fuzzy Happy-For-Now. Then you’ll be faced with a choice – read on, all the way up to the edge of a cliff where I’ll leave you hanging, or stop right where you are and wait for Book Two to come out on June 13 and read Chapter Twenty-One then. If you love a cliffy, you can have one. If you detest a cliffy, you don’t have to deal with it! Also, if you’d rather wait until the entire trilogy is complete you’ll only have a couple of months to wait.

Book Two: Finding Hope releases June 13
Book Three: Give Hope a Chance releases July 11

About SJ McCoy

Hi, I’m SJ, a coffee addict, lover of chocolate and drinker of good red wines. I’m a lost soul and a hopeless romantic. Reading and writing are necessary parts of who I am. Though perhaps not as necessary as coffee! I can drink coffee without writing, but I can’t write without coffee.

I grew up loving romance novels, my first boyfriends were book boyfriends, but life intervened, as it tends to do, and I wandered down the paths of non-fiction for many years. My life changed completely a few of years ago and I returned to Romance to find my escape.

I write ‘Sweet N Steamy’ stories because to me there is enough angst and darkness in real life. My favorite romances are happy escapes with a focus on fun, friendships and happily-ever-afters, just like the ones I write.

These days I live in beautiful Montana, the last best place. If I’m not reading or writing you’ll find me just down the road in the park – Yellowstone. I have deer, eagles and the occasional bear for company, and I like it that way :0)

EXCERPT:

I was falling in love with this fixer-upper, but before we made an offer on the house, I had to check out the basement. I clicked on the light and stepped over the threshold, into darkness. Floating dust motes filled the air, dancing in the flashlight’s beam.

The room before me was expansive, running the length and width of the house. On one end was a wooden stall for firewood, still stacked with logs. They’d come in handy if we restored the fireplace, though I didn’t look forward to cleaning off the cobwebs covering them. The other end of the basement was stacked with junk and garbage, similar to what we’d encountered upstairs.

Everything was blanketed with a thick layer of dust. My nose was stuffy—all the dust triggering my allergies. I made a mental note to take an antihistamine when I got back to the car. Otherwise I’d be paying for this excursion tonight, when my sinuses were too clogged to let me sleep. I just hoped there wasn’t any mold down here. I’d heard horror stories from my neighbor about getting mold removed from her home. The procedure had been costly, and if we got this house, it’d cost us enough as it was.

I ventured a little deeper into the basement, shining my flashlight on the pile of junk. I could make out an old wooden trunk. Did that come with the house? Maybe I’d clean it up and use it for a coffee table.

The beam of my flashlight fell on a tattered ragdoll. The doll’s fabric face and its light brown yarn hair looked dingy. Its flower print dress was dotted with rust colored stains and black flecks. The flecks looked like rodent feces.

There was a rustle to my right, and I startled, swinging my light toward the sound. Given the state of the doll’s dress, I thought it might be a rat.

Suddenly the air was thick with flies. I clamped my mouth shut as they flew toward my face, waving my arms madly to keep them away. They crawled in my hair and buzzed in my ears, and I bit back a shriek. The beam of my flashlight flickered as I used it to swat the flies. I shuddered at the thought of it going out and having to find my way back to the stairs in the dark.

I stumbled back toward the corridor that led to the door of the basement, trying to see through squinted eyes, the cloud of flies, and the dying light of the Maglite. As I reached the passage, the buzzing sound eased, and the flies began to drift back to whatever attracted them to the basement.

I dared one last look, directing my beam to the offending corner of the basement. The dirt floor was carpeted with insects. Flies and other crawling things, though I was too far away to tell what they were. There seemed to be a small lump on the floor that attracted their interest. A dead rat, most likely, but there was no way I was going back to find out.

All that has been turned upside down by the untimely death of her cherished mother two years ago. To make matters worse, her father is getting remarried to a high-maintenance beauty that Molly seemingly has nothing in common with, and she comes with an annoying six-year old son, Henry, who finds a way to wreck everything in his path.
Molly can't find anything about her new circumstances to be excited about, until her Aunt Joan tells her about the wishing well at Molly's grandparents' farm. According to Aunt Joan, every wish she ever made there came true. And it just so happens that Molly and Henry will be staying at the farm for a week while their parents are on their honeymoon. Molly is convinced if she could just find that wishing well, she could wish for her mom to come back to life and everything will be okay again.
But Molly is in for a few surprises, and more that a few hard lessons about being careful what you wish for when the consequences of Molly's selfish desires wreak havoc on her entire family. Can Molly make things right again through the wishing well? Or will she need to find it within herself to bring back the joy in her life that has been missing all this time?

Excerpt

CHAPTER EIGHT

Molly was lying in bed, still as a mummy, star- ing up at the ceiling fan. The whirling of the fan and the rhythm of the ticking of the clock on the
wall should have lulled her to sleep hours ago. But sleep didn’t come easy when your mind buzzed as busy as a swarm of bees. As hard as she tried, Molly couldn’t get the thought of the wishing well out of her head.
What if Grandpa Cody’s wish didn’t come true because he didn’t believe hard enough? Didn’t Grandma Saige say that the power of a wish was be- lieving in it? What if Molly really believed as hard as she could, would it still be possible? The waiting drove her crazy. Too many questions remained un- answered. What did it look like? And why did her mom show it to her in a dream?
That was it. Molly had to find out. And now was as good a time as any, since she wouldn’t be getting any sleep anyhow.
Molly sat up, stiff and groggy, and pulled the cov- ers off of her. Luckily, the full moon outside cast a dull glow inside Aunt Joan’s room from the window. It gave Molly just enough light to find her way to her suitcase without turning on the bedroom light and risk waking anyone up.
What should she wear? Molly decided on jeans and a long-sleeve T-shirt. Even though it was most likely still warm and muggy out, she didn’t want the bugs pestering her. She fumbled her way through the suitcase and got dressed as quietly as possible. That was very hard to do in a mostly dark room.
But where were her sneakers? Molly’s heart sank. She had left them outside because they were muddy! Oh well, they were most likely still there. That was not a good enough reason for her to give up now.
Molly snuck the two pennies on the nightstand into her jeans pocket for safekeeping. She was ready, but not really. Molly was nervous. She didn’t yet have a plan. Oh, well, just go for it, she decided. What else was she going to do, sit up all night and think about it?
The first step would be to get out of the house undetected. Molly tiptoed to the bedroom door. She turned the knob ever so slightly. Phew, it wasn’t squeaky. Molly eased the door open and peered into the upstairs hallway.
All the other doors were closed. Molly paused to listen. It was noiseless, except for Molly’s breathing, which sounded too loud.
Molly put one foot out into the hallway to test and see if the floor was creaky. It was, a little. She imagined herself a burglar and inched across the side of the hallway, careful not to disturb any of the pictures on the wall. Her eyes adjusted to the dark- ness, but she could still see only about a foot in front of her at a time. Molly held her arms out to feel her way, relying on all her senses to maneuver down the hall.
The moonlight from the downstairs front win- dow illuminated the stairwell. She was worried about tumbling down and waking everyone up, ruin- ing her adventure. Not to mention hurting herself. So, like a fool, she sat down on the front step. And slowly, one by one, scooted down each step on her bottom until she safely reached the first floor.
Once she was downstairs, Molly looked up to make sure she was still alone. She was, and she sure felt like it. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. It felt really creepy. She fought against the urge to get back upstairs and tuck herself back into bed. Maybe this would be the re- solve that was needed to show the wishing well that she really did deserve to have her wish come true. Molly steeled herself and carried on.
She would need a light for outside. Molly remem- bered that Grandpa Cody had gotten a large, bright flashlight out of the pantry in the kitchen when the power had gone out during one of her visits.
Molly crept into the kitchen. The refrigerator buzzed. Funny, she had never noticed that sound before. The light from the clock display on the stove showed her the way to the pantry. Molly eased the door open. Everything inside looked the same, mostly cans and boxes. She took a breath to give herself patience. One impulsive move could send everything flying off the shelves and cause a ruckus.
She felt around the items on the pantry shelves, her fingertips guiding her from one thing to the next. Something felt like plastic. Molly carefully re- moved it and brought it close to her. It was a large container of ketchup. Disappointed, and not sure that she should bother to keep looking, she spotted a basket on the pantry floor. Molly knelt down and felt through it. Batteries, a radio maybe, and the flashlight!
With a sigh of relief and thanks, Molly grabbed the flashlight. As much as she wanted to turn it on for help, she knew she had to wait until she was far enough away. So she clutched it next to her body and snuck out the side kitchen door, being sure to shut the door slowly and quietly.
Thank goodness, Grandma Saige had left the outside light on next to the kitchen entrance. And there were Molly’s sneakers, placed neatly on the stoop. They had been carefully cleaned, shined up to a polish. Molly smiled. Grandma Saige must have done it.
Molly pulled on her shoes and breathed in the damp nighttime air. She noticed that far off into the distance, past the vegetable garden and the fields where she was headed, it was pitch black besides the moonlit glow way up in the sky.
It was so different than nighttime in her own neighborhood. At least there were streetlights there, homes all around giving a sense of not being utterly and completely alone. Here there was no such se- curity. It was just Molly, and the sound of bugs that couldn’t be seen.
Molly stood and walked briskly past the vegeta- ble garden. She strutted with a purpose, her arms around her waist for comfort, clutching the still un- lit flashlight. She was approaching the pathway be- tween two rows of cornfields. She would follow this narrow dirt path to the end of the corn, and then she should be close.
Molly’s concentration was broken by a rustling in the cornfield beside her. She froze, her heart screaming inside of her. It could be a coyote. Or a serial killer. What a fool she was!
Her hands trembling, she pressed the button of the flashlight to turn it on, and shone it in the di- rection of the unwelcome noise. “Who’s there?” she whispered loudly, sounding more like a scared little girl than she wanted to.
A shadowy shape emerged from the cornstalks. It moved low to the ground, creeping toward her.
Molly scolded herself for going outside all alone. What kind of trouble was headed her way?

U8 Running Headphones Sport Wireless Earphones

Super nice set of wireless headphones. They paired super easy with my phone and my laptop. They come with 3 sizes of very soft ear buds so should fit just about any ear.  The hooks are very flexible and soft as well. These are super comfortable and light weight to wear.

The sound quality was great. I used these while cleaning the house, I could hear just fine over the vacuum, running water, and the wash machine. They are sweat proof also, which is great I live in Florida and sweat about 360 days out of the year.

The charge time was about 1 1/2 hours and they say they have a 10 hour run time. I used them for about 6 with no problems and they were not dead yet.

I am very happy with these wireless earphones.

YunJey Womens Casual 3/4 Sleeve Scoop Neck Heart Embroidered Dress

4*
The only reason I am giving this a 4 * is because it is a bit small in the chest area, I wear a 38 D and it is tight in the chest. I love the dress, the color is rich and beautiful. The embroidery is stunning. The dress is very soft and feels so nice to the touch. It comes to just above md thigh on my and I am 5'6. This would look great as a mini dress or even with leggings. The 3/4 sleeves are loose and I loved that about the dress, I am not one that likes form fitting sleeves. The dress seems to be very well made, all the stitching seems to be tight and continuous. I will be ordering anther dress in a larger size for myself and giving this on to my daughter.

Excerpt:

'Darius, can you
feel that?'
A tingling
sensation seeped into her bones. It pulsed through her, prickling the hairs on
the back of her neck.
'Darius,
something feels wrong.'
Violetta turned
and was surprised to find Darius facing away. His tall frame appeared to have
frozen beside her much loved tree, his face turned up toward the sky.
'Brother? What's
wrong? Tell me.'
Violetta
followed her brother's gaze.
Darkness stole
over her. Violetta could see the storm a mile off and it showed no signs of
letting up. She flinched as she felt something hit her face. Water? Darius
began to stir, but Violetta's eyes remained fixed on the sky. She had heard of
rain. It was said that the Air Realm was frequently visited by such cool
showers, but never had she heard of a storm in the Flame Realm. At least, not
since the Almighty Storm of the Ancients.
Violetta felt
her courage flee her. She let out a high-pitched squeal; a reaction to the
hands that had forced themselves around her arms.
'Shh, it's just
me.' Darius stroked the golden waves of her hair. 'We must get inside.
Understand?'
Violetta gazed
into her brother's dark eyes. She nodded.
'Yes.'
'Good, we
haven't got long before the storm hits.'
Violetta dove
toward Jork's ball. She trapped it between her wrinkled skirts, gathering it up
in her slender arms. The rain gathered speed.
'Darius, I've
got it!' she squealed. Silence greeted her. 'Darius? Where are you?'
Violetta could
hear raised voices in the distance. They were muffled, likely from inside the
secret passage they had used to get down here.
'Darius?' She
spotted a limp shape stretched across the lap of her tree. 'DARIUS!'
Something struck
Violetta hard in the shoulder, lifting her clean off the ground. Her mouth
formed a silent scream as she flew through the air, clinging tight to Jork's
ball. To Violetta's surprise, she landed on her feet.
Violetta's
vision swam, her shoulder screaming in agony at a chunk of ice that had pierced
the flesh. She glanced about, searching for Darius when something else zipped
past her ear. Violetta tried to put thoughts of the pain aside. She gazed above
her, where the sky had become a blinding white.
Violetta's
fingernails dug into her ball and the agony she felt appeared to diminish. Her
eyes snapped down to her shoulder, which only moments ago had been spiking with
pain.
'That's not
possible,' she gasped.
Violetta's skin
was pale and smooth, not a cut or scratch anywhere in sight. Her eyes wandered
down to Jork's ball, before flocking back to the pale skies above. This had to
be a dream. The sky here wasn't white. It was a bright and beauteous blue,
always.
Remembering how
Darius had been struck, Violetta returned her gaze to her tree.
'Darius?'
Her legs carried
her over to him, aching with the sudden chill. Violetta was unsure of what she
was going to find. She drew close and saw the tree's tangled roots embracing
Darius. His mop of dark hair was slick with the rain, his eyes only just
glazing over.
'No.'
Violetta knelt
down and gasped at the sight of her brother's chest. A large needle of ice had
speared his flesh, spilling ruby liquid around its edges. A banshee's wail
exploded from her.
All sound
escaped Violetta's world. The edges of her vision darkened, leaving her only
with eyes for her brother.
'Good Lord,
Prince Darius!'
Clarisse's harsh
voice cut through the silence. The elderly nursemaid sprinted past, her cold
stare fixed on the limp form of their Realm's heir. She bent down to examine
the prince's wounds, shooting an angry scowl Violetta's way.
'Just what did
you think you were doing?' she snarled.
The veins in her forehead began to rise, as
though attempting to escape from their fleshy prison.
Violetta's face
was devoid of emotion. She could do little more than stare when a startled
scream sounded nearby.
'My boy!'
'Mother?'
Violetta got back to her feet. 'Mother, ice is coming down from the sky. We
must go. Darius said-'
Violetta locked
eyes with her parent. Tears ran afresh down Queen Isobel's face as she raced
through the rain to reach her child. Her golden curls, which were usually
pinned atop her head, now hung loose and trailed limply down her back.
No-one noticed
the shards of ice soaring past. Violetta wanted to run. She wanted to warn her
mother before it was too late, but her body felt like it had frozen in place.
She strained against her fear with all her might.
'Mother, we must
go! Now!'
The queen darted
across to the great oak tree. She scooped up the body of her only son, wailing
against his dark mop of hair.
'Darius!'
The despair in
her voice matched the feelings that stirred within Violetta.

Queen Isobel
refused to part from her son. He lay there, still as stone, his flesh growing
colder by the moment. Violetta would remember this day for the rest of her
life. She clung tight to Jork's gift and prepared to race, to grasp hold of her
mother, when another shard shot out of the darkness. A struggling scream filled
the air. It was a scream that would haunt her forever.

Excerpt One:  Danced Close

I could have kissed him right then for that reaction. He didn’t go all dude bro about the prospect of being led by someone wearing high heels or get embarrassed that I owned said shoes.

“Can I ask something?” he asked after a few more turns. He had that serious look again, but he’d been so cool so far, I was more than willing to risk some discomfort.

“Sure.”

“Your lips . . . they’re so shiny . . . You do a gloss, right? Ever do color?”

His eyes were indeed locked right on my mouth. I got a little thrill knowing that he thought about my mouth.

“I’ve been known to.” At this point, it had been enough years that I wasn’t going to apologize for the contents of my makeup case. But unlike when a lot of people asked me about it, I didn’t get all defen- sive with Todd, who seemed more . . . thoughtful in his curiosity than some. “Why? Would you like that next week?”

He was silent a long moment, gnawing on his own lip. I was seri- ously going to have to get the guy some balm the way he abused the poor things. “Yeah, I think I might.” He sounded a bit surprised at himself, giving me a shy smile.
