Synopsis: It has only been a few months since humanity has found out about the shifters that live in their midst. When the New Alliance leadership asks Eric King to join Alpha Squad, a joint taskforce supposed to promote cooperation between the shifters and human authorities, his loyalty to the cause doesn’t give him any choice but to agree. But is the squad actually supposed to be relevant, or is it just an eyewash, set up by the new Secretary for Shifter Affairs to make himself look good? And how is he going to concentrate on his training, when his inner bear is insisting that the squad leader is his true mate?

Major Janine Williams is not at all pleased when she is ordered to set up Alpha Squad. The initiative is just a gimmick, meant to pacify the shifter community, plus none of her male colleagues had wanted the job. But when she starts getting to know her team, especially tough East London bear shifter, Eric, she starts to wonder if perhaps it will be possible to make this task force a success, so long as everyone works together. And so long as she can manage to keep her relationship with Eric strictly professional...

EXCERPT

Eric took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He should have just stayed behind at that service station, perhaps tried to strike up more of a conversation with the mysterious woman who had caught his eye there. Or ideally, he should have risked Henry's disapproval and refused to join the task force. Anything was better than this.

Back to the mystery woman. And what a woman she was. A regal beauty, with a voice that had set his heart alight. His inner bear had tried its best to claw to the surface; he'd hardly been able to control the urge to shift right there in front of her.

How would she have reacted if she'd seen his true form? Things had changed since the New Alliance's little stunt, coming out to the entire world media, but they hadn't changed that much for everyone. Humans were still apprehensive, and why wouldn't they be? Most of their kind were pretty damn scary looking.

Would she have screamed and run away? Or would she have been intrigued?

He would never find out of course, because he'd let that opportunity pass him by when Adam had dragged him back to the restaurant for lunch.

Where was she now? And was she thinking about their little encounter as much as he was?

So many questions he'd never get the answer to…

Instead, he was stuck here in this decrepit old building with a bunch of people, none of whom seemed to want to be here. Except Blackwood the wolf, maybe. He had seemed like the most cheerful person here after Adam.

The sound of the door disturbed his gloomy thoughts, but he tried to ignore the intrusion.

"Attention!" Private Callahan's voice filled the dorm.

Eric opened his eyes and sat up straight on his bed. The top of his head almost touched the springs underneath Adam's mattress above.

The private stepped aside and another woman marched into the room.

Was he still daydreaming? He could not believe who had entered—the woman he'd just been fantasizing about.

"Major Williams would like to say a few words," Private Callahan said.

Major Williams. Eric was speechless. He had expected a grey-haired man, gruff like the SAS guy across the room, but perhaps more polished. Their commander was a woman. His woman.

Major Williams scanned the room, slowly, pausing on each of the other trainees for a moment, then moving on to the next. Until she spotted Eric. She looked away instantly. Of course, she'd recognized him as well, and she did not look pleased to find him here.

"I am Major Janine Williams, your team leader. Welcome and thank you for joining Alpha Squad. Starting tomorrow, I will conduct your training, evaluate you, and report on the progress of this task force with the relevant higher authorities. The first phase of training starts in the morning and will last two weeks, at the end of which you will all be graded on various aspects of your performance. Anyone who is deemed unfit to continue will be asked to leave at that point, before phase two begins. Any questions?"

Questions? Eric had so many of those. He did not speak, though.

"What do you mean, unfit? I was told I was being transferred here permanently," Ben, the younger of the two humans complained.

"You shall address me as Major Williams or Ma'am, first of all. Secondly, this task force is not a joke. Only those who are worthy will make the cut." The major glared at him from across the room. Eric couldn't help but be impressed by her show of authority.

Cooper folded his arms and pressed his lips together.

"Do you understand? What's your name?"

"Ben Cooper, Ma'am. Yes, I understand."

Eric had trouble suppressing a smile. She wasn't going to take any crap from anyone, that much was obvious. It would only be a matter of time before Adam and the major would clash similarly. Amusingly, he found himself rooting not for his brother, but for the woman. Training under her command could get interesting.

She glanced at him for a split second, during which he did his best to hide his reaction. He would play along, fall in line, and do his best to fit into the squad. He owed it to Henry, but that was not the only reason. Fate had handed him a second chance after he recklessly failed to get her details earlier today. No matter what, Eric was not going to waste the opportunity. He'd prove his worth to her one way or another before training was over.

"All right then, at ease, everyone," the major said, "You have a big day ahead of you and I suggest you take rest."

Eric nodded, mostly to himself, and lay back on his cot again. Perhaps this whole Alpha Squad nonsense had a couple of silver linings after all.

About Kim Golden

KimGolden

I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and spent most of my childhood summers in Smithfield, Virginia. I’m not sure where my love of words comes from, but I’ve loved books since I was a child and I’ve loved writing stories for as long as I can remember.

My parents wanted me to do something practical–be an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, an accountant. But I always dreamed of doing something completely different. I knew I wanted to be a writer, even if it took a bit of time for me to get to that point.

It led me to spend more time writing stories than studying physics and chemistry in high school. It’s what led me study literature and then work on an MFA in Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University. And when I finished my master’s degree, love led me away from the US and brought me to Sweden.

So what do I write? I write about relationships, about love. I often write about interracial relationships. I like reading stories about people who are different, who see past the differences and fall in love. And those are the stories I also enjoy writing. I write stories for people who know that love comes in many colors.

My Review:
This book reminds me of Cinderella. But it is Cinderella meets a Vampire.
Catherine "Cat" is a homebody and her Friend Shelly is a party girl. Shelly gets a invitation to a Halloween Ball and convinces Cat to come with her. Even though Cat agrees to go she really doesn't want to. Once at the ball several people/vampires start eyeing Cat. Cat ends up leaving almost falling into bed with Alexander. Alexander abruptly ends the ball on her departure.
Neither Cat nor Alexander know Cat is a Blood Bride. Alexander just know he wants her. When a council member explains it to Alexander, he now understands why he was so drawn to her. He also knows he must protect her. A Blood Bride has blood so potent it has a profound effect on vampires that will cause them to loose control.
Cat on the other hand knows nothing. She begins dreaming of Alexander. Her dreams start to explain things to her, like that Alexander is a vampire. She is also being stalked. She knows in her mind without being told that Alexander will protect her though.
This is a pretty short book but it never slows down. The romance in the book is kind of steamy but also very sweet. Lorelei Moone has done an awesome job with this book. Cannot wait for book 2.

Author's Bio:

Marilyn R. Wilson is a freelance writer and speaker with a passion for interviewing. Her career as a writer began in an unusual way, by answering a Craigslist ad. It was while conducting her first interview the world shifted - she had found her passion. Since 2006, she has interviewed over 150 people from as near as her hometown of Vancouver, Canada, and as far away as South Africa.

Whether through a random encounter on the New York subway or via a one-on-one interview with an internationally recognized artist, the goal is the same-to give wings to the unique journeys of inspiring individuals. This goal first led the author to co-launch a successful, innovative magazine focused on professionals working in the fashion industry paired with photography and illustrations by local artists. Then in 2015, Wilson took her passion to a new audience with the release of her first book, the first in a series featuring the lives of real people living real lives.

Interview with Marilyn R Wilson

1. What was your journey to becoming a writer?

I actually started at a later age - proving it's never too late.  My kids were all teenagers and didn't need as much of my time, so I went on Craigslist to look at job listings. On a total whim, and with no experience behind me, I sent off several submissions to a New York Magazine looking for fashion articles. No one was more surprised than me when two were accepted. The articles were on local fashion designers and it was while conducting my first interview that I realized I had found my passion. I love hearing others share their story. Learning what made for a good article took time as well as a lot of trial and error. It was hard. But I love interviewing and so I put my nose to the grind stone and just worked very hard.

2. Do you ever struggle with Writer's Block?

Absolutely. While there are exceptions, I think most writers do at some time or another.  For me it comes from a lack of confidence. I am not writing my own words, I'm trying to channel the story of someone else. The responsibility to get it right weighs heavily at times.  There really is no solution but to sit down and try. Once the words are on paper, however, I actually like the editing process. I have been told it's the reverse for many others. They like the writing and hate the editing.

3. What makes for a great interview?

I love unique. I love diversity. I love hearing a life story that is totally different from mine. The more different, the more I am intrigued. On a practical note, it simplest when the person enjoys telling their story.  I am a totally rapt audience which makes it easier for most, but some people are very private by nature and uncomfortable talking about themselves. At these times it takes a lot of encouragement to tease out their story. And that's where practice and enthusiasm helps.

4. What do you love most about what you do? What do you love the least?

What I love most is doing the interviews. I have always had a passion for people's journeys and through them I have learned to accept my own uniqueness. It's okay to be different.  Least favorite? I record all interviews and that means transcribing them.  It takes a long time and is very tedious. I have finally outsourced most of the transcribing. I also don't enjoy marketing and promotion. It's a lot of work and takes up enormous time that I'd rather spend interviewing and writing.

5. What is one thing people don't know about you?

That I struggle with confidence at times.  I have a lot of energy and enjoy most social experiences. When I'm on a roll like that I can look (and feel) very confident. But I was an odd duck growing up - not a girlie girl.  So there are events where it feels everyone knows the rules of behavior - well except me. Wedding and baby showers top the list.  Or events where social expectations on how to behave are high. Somehow I missed that gene. Thankfully it's not all the time and I now know how to prepare myself mentally ahead of time.

6. 2017 saw a big change for you. What was that?

In October my publisher decided to change their focus and moved all authors to their own imprint - the reason I released a second edition of Life Outside the Box.  This second edition and all further books will be published under my own brand,  Real People - Real Lives Press.  Life Outside the Box is a series with at least two more books expected to be released. I also have 3 other titles in the beginning stages that will be along the same line, but with a slightly different focus. If you want to be first in line to hear about new titles, just go to www.marilynrwilson.com and add your email to my newsletter list.'

7. What advice do you have for anyone wanting to pursue a career in writing?

It's actually very easy to be a writer. A writer writes. Just do it every day. The hard part comes as you move into publication and earning that paycheck. It's a tough industry going through a lot of change. You have to prepare yourself that it may not be financially lucrative. The areas of writing that do pay are not usually the ones we dream of - writing copy for websites, writing technical instructions, etc.  But if your passion is to write, then you will find a way to work it into your life. Just begin.

To solve the murder of a movie star just weeks before the Academy Awards, Detective Frankie Ryan has to navigate through a web of Hollywood secrets and political landmines, not to mention the "old boys club" in her own police department. The presence of a new designer drug and the deaths it is tallying up threaten to hinder her investigation and leave her without a suspect—and maybe out of a job. Even with the aid of psychic reporter Josh Harrell, there is more confusion around every corner. Trusted friends will turn on her, leaving her unsure who to believe and who might be in on the murder and conspiracy.

Can Frankie discover the killer before it is too late?

Note: this is book 3 of the series but each book stands alone

Excerpt:

Frankie nodded and stepped inside the curtain. Daniel Martin
wasn’t a large man, but now he seemed even smaller in the over- sized hospital bed. He stared at Frankie with glassy eyes.
“I guess now I’m one of the usual suspects to be rounded up,” he said with a voice just above a whisper.
“We can pin attempted murder on you for Belmont and probably link you to Hobbs and Gordon, but we can make things a lot more manageable for you if you just tell me who is behind Ruby Red.”
Martin’s face broke into a rueful smile. “You just don’t get it. You’re dealing with forces much bigger than you or me. You’re just a pawn, and so am I.”
Frankie drew her face closer. “You might not have much time. I can have a priest or minister here if you want to make your peace. Don’t die with this on your conscience.”
Martin’s smile turned into a sneer. “The old circling the drain argument. Does that ever work? You’re not even good material for a Grade B cop movie from the ’40s. You keep digging into this, and you’ll be busted down to walking South Central on the midnight shift.”
“Is someone in the department dirty?”
Martin just stared at her while his lips broke into a grim smile. His face became flushed, and his eyes lost focus. An alarm sounded,
and the room was flooded with nurses. Frankie led Josh out. She shook her head.
What could possibly be scary enough for a man on death’s door- step to keep him from talking?
