Excerpt Three:

“What are you doing back here? I told you it was dangerous for them to find you here. How did you get to this place? I did not initiate this link.”

The voice sounded the same as the one from her dream-like meditation from two nights before. Lauren wondered why the presence spoke to her like she knew her. Also, what she was saying didn’t make any sense to Lauren.

“I’m here because I was guided here. Why is it dangerous to be here?”

“No one can guide you here but me,” Lauren heard the presence say, while at the same time, Estella was asking, “Lauren, are you talking to someone?”

“Yes, Estella. There’s a woman here and she’s telling me I should go because it’s dangerous for me. And she wants to know how I got here in the first place. I told her you guided me here, but she says you can’t do that.”

“Who are you talking to?” The woman now sounded as if she were confused.

“I’m talking to my therapist, Dr. Estella Olivier.”

“A therapist?” The voice was quiet for several moments. “Are you awake, Lauren?”

This woman was asking the strangest questions. And though she didn’t want to answer, there was just something about her that Lauren sensed she could trust.

“Yes, I’m awake. I’m at a session with my doctor to determine why I can’t sleep. She led me to this room to figure out the answer and then you started talking.”

Both the woman and Estella were silent.

The woman’s voice broke the silence. “Lauren, we have never spoken before while you were awake.”

Interview with Sharolyn G Brown

As a kid did you write or make up stories?
As a kid I did make-up stories, but I never wrote them down or shared them with anyone. I mainly told them to myself and my imaginary friends.

Where does most of your Character inspiration come from?
My characters are inspired by the stories. I usually start with a scenario that interests me. For example, the scenario that inspired The Heaviness of Knowing was ‘what if aliens were trying to invade Earth and they were using our dreams to do so’. Then as I think about the idea, the characters affected by this scenario start to develop.

In the case of The Heaviness of Knowing, I first saw the alien woman who was working with the aliens. Then I saw the human woman she was connecting with. Later, other important secondary characters developed as the story began to take shape.

Do some qualities of your characters come from real people?
Some qualities do come from real people, but not intentionally. Meaning, I never start by saying I want this character to be like Person X. Generally, as the story unfolds, I see who the character is becoming and then draw parallels. For example, Lauren is a very Type A personality. So when she has to go to therapy in the story, I patterned her reaction after a Type A person I know.

What was the inspiration for your book?
The inspiration for The Heaviness of Knowing was a conversation with a friend who told me she never dreams. It made me wonder why some people remember their dreams, and others don’t. My imagination took over and came up with an idea involving aliens who were using our dreams to invade the Earth.

What is your favorite spot to write?
My favorite place to write is my home office. I’m fortunate enough to have that space all to myself. I like to write without distractions. So I can go in there, close the door, and write.

What advice would you give budding writers?

My advice to budding writers is, write. Even if it's bad, write. Keep writing until you get better. If you need help getting better, get the help you need. But, most importantly, keep writing. Always remember that writers write.

GDEALER 16"x13" Barbecue Grill Mats Grilling Mat Set of 4

I live in Florida. We grill year round pretty much here. It is better to grill out then heat the kitchen up for me. Thsi set of Grill mats has made it easier for me to grill. I don't have to worry about food sticking to the grill grates or falling through. I can also grill foods I never thought of tossing on a grill as well. I can actually do a whole stir fry on the grill. It works great to add chicken, shrimp, pork, or whatever then all the veggies and let them cook. I don't have to clean up a pan after wards either. Just wash off the grill mat and I am ready to grill my next meal. These mats are reusable. They can be cleaning in a sink of hot soapy water. It is non stick so no scrubbing no matter what I cook. I hate cleaning up after cheeseburgers. The yucky stuck on ground beef bits then you have the melted on cheese, it's a nightmare. With this grill mat all of that comes right off, and the caramelized onions I make beside the burgers on the grill are to die for. These also work in baking pans. Lay it in the bottom of a cookie sheet and use it in the over. Takes the stuck on baked on mess away from the pans, and I save on aluminum foil. I am thrilled with my grill mats. and with 4 in the set I can designate ones for the grill, ones for the oven for meats, and even use one for baking cookies and stuff.

I received this product during a promotion free for my honest review and they are 100% my own opinions. I received no compensation for this review and I am not required to give a good review. I am also not associated with the seller in any way.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Sunlight sliced into Layla’s eyes the moment she cracked them open. An impending threat itched along her skin. Outside, mostly naked and vulnerable, she jackknifed to a sitting position. Darkness roared to life. No! She’d dropped her guard. Out of the corner of her eye, she just managed to register Thaull lunge for her before her vision faded.
It was different this time...the reemerging. She took stock of her shaking limbs, the hand clamped onto her wrist, and the deep rumble of displeasure rattling in a male’s chest as reality seeped into her consciousness.
Her free hand grasped for her knife, her senses expanding, filling. Thaull. She knew his smell, and from last night, his name. Oh gods... What had she done?
Terrified to see the condemnation in his eyes, or worse, the pall of death filling them by her hand, she slowly turned. Transfixed by the splattered blood covering his bare chest, she followed the trail up his neck until her gaze landed on his face. His raw carnality hit her like a blast of heat. Was he always this way? His calculating eyes narrowed, observing her every move.
Unsure what to say to him, she cleared her throat. “Get out” hardly seemed appropriate.
Before she could speak, he was on her. His mouth forced hers open, his tongue filling her, fighting for space. He kissed the breath from her, and she was glad for it.
With his hand fisted in her hair, he tugged her head back, staring with an unfathomable look that pierced the depths of her soul. She stood, plastered against him, because he willed it. What just happened?
Interview with Amy McKinley
As a kid did you write or make up stories?
Like most kids, my imagination knew no bounds. My friends and I would create intricate worlds where we were the superheroes. It wasn’t until we began writing in school that I found another outlet for my imagination. Over time the stories shifted and evolved but the spark of an idea that spins out into another world is one I still thoroughly enjoy.
Where does most of your Character inspiration come from?
Everywhere. Main characters seem to come to me the most when my mind is relaxed while driving or about to fall asleep, but that’s not always the case. Daydreaming is a great way for ideas to form and play out.
The other day I was driving along a pretty country road and went past an old home set away from the road. My main character appeared in my head, as did the beginning for the book I want to write…someday. It’s jotted down in my growing file of story ideas.
Do some qualities of your characters come from real people?
Yes, some qualities do. I borrow certain traits or skills from friends and put them into my characters, or a stranger I may see that caught my eye. I know people who are painters, sculptors, and who lived in Scotland where Layla resides. Sharing qualities with people I know isn’t always the case; some of my characters are entirely fictional.
What was the inspiration for your book?
The inspiration for Taken began while driving through the mist. There is an otherworldly or effervescent quality to it early in the morning.
What is your favorite spot to write?
Lately it’s been on the loveseat in my office. I’ll sit with a laptop desk over my legs and type away. If I’m writing for long periods of time I need to sit at my desk as my posture is better there.
What advice would you give budding writers?
Keep going! If this is your passion then it’s worth it to keep pushing yourself, write every day if you’re able, and read every chance you get. Always read, and not only the genre you write in.
Excerpt:
It is easy enough to list in advance, and with absolute certainty, those things for which we are prepared to die. Family, country, religion, the one we love, a valued way of life. Until we are faced with a situation that puts our convictions to the test, we can never know for sure which of these will hold true. There were many lessons to be learned during those strange weeks on the island of Corazón, but, for Connie Lacey, this would prove be the most important.
Four years of running and hiding. Four years of looking over her shoulder. Of viewing every man she met with suspicion. Of waking every morning, wondering if today was the day he would finally catch up with her.
The relief of being offered somewhere to hide was so huge it drove every other thought out of her head. She had a brief mental image of herself as a disaster survivor and the man opposite as the rescue worker who had just draped an emergency blanket around her shoulders. She resisted the temptation to cling to him, garbling out incoherent thanks until he was forced to gently pry her hands away. They were the wild thoughts spinning through Connie Lacey’s mind as she listened to the clipped tones of the attorney.
With hindsight, she probably should have paid more attention to the strangeness of the offer he was making and the diffident manner with which he made it. Gratitude will do that to you, she decided later. At the time her attention was taken up with grabbing this opportunity. Nod, smile, and sign on the dotted line. Don’t ask questions that might make him withdraw this incredible invitation. All she could focus on was the fact that—for thirty days, at least—she would not have to sleep with a knife under her pillow.
“You have one week.” She realized Mr. Reynolds had finished outlining the details of the proposal. “My client will expect you to be in Florida in exactly seven days’ time.”
Connie swallowed hard. She might have known there would be a catch. The logistics of getting to Florida posed a massive problem. Mentally, she reviewed the contents of her wallet. She knew exactly how much cash was in there. It wouldn’t get her across town let alone across the country. Before she could speak, Mr. Reynolds reached into the desk drawer and produced a hefty roll of banknotes. His expression softened slightly as he passed them across the desk.
“Expenses. For the journey and such sundry other items as may be necessary.” He cleared his throat with a hint of something that might have been embarrassment. “My client is a very exacting man. His guests will, for example, be required to dress for dinner during their stay on Corazón.”
Darn! And there I was thinking I had successfully managed to hide the fact that the sole is hanging off one of my sneakers and this sweater has forgotten what color it used to be.
Connie stuffed the wad of cash into her shoulder bag with a muttered word of thanks. If an encounter with Sylvester’s attorney could reduce her to the status of a gibbering wreck, how on earth was she going to cope with the man himself?
As she got to her feet, Mr. Reynolds rose and came around the desk. He held out his hand. Surprised, Connie took it. Instead of the handshake she had expected, he clasped her hand between both of his. It was an oddly tactile gesture for such an aloof man.
“However this venture may turn out…” He paused and Connie sensed he was fighting an internal battle. As if the personal and professional were at war within him. The result felt like his version of a truce. “I wish you well, Miss Lacey.”
It was only later, when she got back to her grim, one-room apartment and counted—then, in disbelief, re-counted—the money, that she began to truly appreciate the gulf between her world and that of Corazón. What constituted “sundry other items” to Mr. Reynolds was almost a year’s salary to Connie.
Laughing, she tossed the notes into the air and briefly contemplated just disappearing with them. To hell with “second cousin several convoluted times removed” Sylvester and his mysteriously worded proposition. This money could buy her the freedom from fear she had been dreaming of. Temporarily, it was true, but even that was so much more than she had wished for. No more moving from town to town and job to job? No more looking over her shoulder? Yeah, I’ll take that and deal with the future when it gets here.
A pang of guilt tugged at her. Backing out wasn’t an option. She had just accepted Mr. Reynolds’s wretched invitation and a promise was, after all, a promise. Besides—despite its reputation—she was intrigued enough by Corazón to want to see it and, even if she admitted it only to herself, she wanted to meet the legendary Sylvester.
The ease with which Arthur Reynolds, senior partner in the firm of Reynolds, Prudah and Taylor, had tracked her down was unsettling. Even if she hadn’t been contemplating answering Sylvester’s eccentric summons, it would have been time to move on. Goodbye—she experienced a minor moment of panic as she tried to remember where she was. It had to happen one day—Farmington, Missouri. The last month has been okay, but it was never a long-term thing. We both knew it. No hard feelings.
She had a week to prepare for the journey. With a shrug, she tucked the money away at the back of her closet and curled up on the bed with a book. Connie could have her belongings packed in an hour. She’d done it often enough.
