Someone must
have tied an anvil around Sera’s heart and dropped it into the deepest part of
the deepest ocean. Or was it tossed into a fast-flowing river? Was her heart
stopping or beating too fast? She couldn’t tell, but either way, she was
drowning.

A bright red
glow filled her mind, encasing her entire being in love, driving out the pain.
Her heart, which had been beating its way out of her chest, slowed to its usual
rhythm, her breath returning to normal.

Sera opened her
eyes to find Nora’s face directly in front of her, her friend’s hands gripping
Sera’s shoulders and shaking her lightly.

“Jesus, girl!”
Nora breathed a sigh of relief.

“A moment?”
Dropping her arms, Nora sat back on her heels from her kneeling position in
front of Sera’s chair. “It’s been like five minutes. Okay, maybe just one, but
you weren’t responding. At all.”

Sera rubbed her
face with her hands, trying to clear her thoughts. “Did Theo say anything else?
Where? How?”

“Just that he’d
swing by before classes tomorrow to fill us in and prepare us,” Nora said.

She tensed. She already knew how they were killed. Maybe he was going to update
the others, rightly assuming she hadn’t told them all the details yet. And
probably couldn’t. Not yet, anyway. But where were they found? Did anything
else happen to them? She swallowed the bile rising in her throat.

“You girls need
to get some rest. Eleanor, you’re welcome to stay here as long as you’d like,”
Renee said.

Nora’s curls
bounced as she got to her feet. “You know I appreciate the offer, but there’s
nothing like sleeping in my own bed again after a few nights away. I’ll be back
around seven.”

As Nora leaned
down to hug her, Sera breathed in her familiar oatmeal scent, courtesy of her
ridiculously expensive shower gel. She would definitely sacrifice herself
before letting the Bacchae get their hands on her best friend. Not even Bacchus
could stop her wrath if they tried.

A feeling of
mirth drifted through her mind.

Once Nora left,
Sera headed upstairs to the guest room that had become her new home. The room
was just large enough to hold a full-sized bed and side table adorned with a
vase holding a few white snowdrops. Once she turned off the light, the room
would be enveloped in complete darkness due to the lack of a window. She
welcomed the dark and sleep right about now, if only to cease her chaotic
thoughts.

She knew Renee
didn’t mind her staying there, but Sera hoped it was only temporary like she
kept saying it was. Someday, she’d like her life to return to normal. Whatever
her new normal would be, anyway.

Stephanie Mirro's lifelong love
of ancient mythology led to majoring in the Classics in college, which wasn't
quite as much fun as writing her own mythology stories as she did as a child.
But that education, combined with an overactive imagination and being an avid

Interview with Stephanie Mirro
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story? 100% they hijack the story. But because I’m a plotser/plantser (a plotter & a pantser), I usually let them. I have a high-level idea of what I want to happen with the plot and character arcs, but the real magic happens when I let the characters tell the story.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read. Sassy gods? Check. Sexy vampires? But of course. Determined heroine? You bet. Unexpected twists & turns? Only one way to find out...
Have you written any other books that are not published? Just the books I wrote as a kid. :) I have some unpublished and soon-to-be-published short stories, too.
Pen or type writer or computer? Computer. I type so much faster than I can hand write. I love to print out my drafts and do edits by hand, though.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans? I love hearing from readers! Please feel free to reach out on social media or via email or, even better yet, leave a review. ;)
