About the Author

Tina Kashian spent her childhood summers at the New Jersey shore, building sand castles, boogie boarding, and riding the boardwalk Ferris wheel. She also grew up in the restaurant business where her Armenian parents owned a restaurant for thirty years. She worked almost every job—rolling silverware and wiping down tables as a tween, to hosting and waitressing as a teenager.

After college, Tina worked as a NJ Deputy Attorney General, a patent attorney, and a mechanical engineer. Her law cases inspired an inquiring mind of crime, and since then, Tina has been hooked on mysteries. The Kebab Kitchen Cozy Mystery series launches with Hummus and Homicide, followed by Stabbed in the Baklava and One Feta in the Grave by Kensington Books. Interview with Tina Kashian

Thank you for hosting me today to talk about the newest book in my Kebab Kitchen mystery series, “Stabbed in the Baklava.”

Interview questions:
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

The first chapter sets the tone for the book and I enjoyed writing it. I’ve always loved weddings and following celebrities. Stabbed in the Baklava begins when Lucy Berberian is asked to cater a celebrity wedding at the Jersey shore. Of course, she doesn’t plan on stumbling upon a body during the reception!

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Katie Watson is Lucy Berberian’s best friend and sidekick. She’s funny and quirky and I’d like to spend a day with her. Katie’s married to Bill, an Ocean Crest beat copy. Katie works at the town hall as a clerk, but she’s addicted to crime fighting television shows like Matlock, all the CSI series, and Columbo. We’d spend a day watching Murder She Wrote episodes, then go to the police station to visit Bill and ask about local crime.

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose? I can’t pick just one. First, is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I read it as a teen and loved it. I also love history and would like to write a historical mystery one day. Second, is Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. I read this in High School and fell in love with her mysteries.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination? My characters are fictional, but the story idea came from my past. I grew up in a family restaurant in New Jersey. My Armenian parents owned a restaurant for thirty years. My mom was a talented Mediterranean cook and the grapevine in our backyard was more prized than any rosebush. It was a family business and I worked every job—from rolling silverware in napkins as a tween to hostessing and waitressing as a teenager. My tips paid for my prom gown. We also used to vacation every summer at the Jersey shore. Many of the secondary characters traits, the line cook and waitresses came from people I knew.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

I was born a writer. For as long as I can remember, I have loved books. As a teenager, I used scotch tape to hold my peeling laminated library card together. I spent many nights reading in bed well past midnight to finish a book, only to start another. I know my mom was aggravated waking up a tired teenager every morning.

I wrote my first book when I was sixteen. I remember typing furiously on the family computer, only to get frustrated when I was interrupted by one of my siblings. I thought the book was the greatest ever written, a Jackie Collin’s spin off, and believed it was my ticket to instant fame. How little did I know! Since then, I’ve studied the craft and work hard at creating stories. It’s work but it’s also something I love.
