About the Author

Mystery author Dorothy St. James was raised in South Carolina. She makes her home on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina with her husband, a neurotic dog, and a fluffy cat. Though writing has always been a passion for her, she pursued an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Biology and a graduate degree in Public Administration and Urban Planning. She put her educational experience to use, having worked in all branches and all levels of government including local, regional, state, and federal. She even spent time during college working for a non-profit environmental watchdog organization.

Switching from government service and community planning to fiction writing wasn't as big of a change as some might think. Her government work was all about the stories of the people and the places where they live. As an urban planner, Dorothy loved telling the stories of the people she met. And from that, her desire to tell the tales that were so alive in her heart grew until she could not ignore it any longer. In 2001, she took a leap of faith and pursued her dream of writing fiction full-time.

T’S Stuff Interview

Interview with Dorothy St. James:

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

Besides getting to eat chocolate, right? Well, that’s easy. It’s the sea turtles. They really captured my heart in this book. I’d lived on the beach for twenty years and enjoyed watching the sea turtle nest and the babies hatch and return to the ocean. What a gift to witness! Not only that, writing about the sea turtles gave me the opportunity to use my knowledge of wildlife biology in one of my mystery novels. It was fun to meld my past professional life with my current writing life.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I’d love to take cooking lessons from Bertie Bays, who helps Penn out at the chocolate shop. Bertie is such a patient woman. I think she could teach even me how to make something taste good from the kitchen.

I love Bertie. I think we’d have fun singing show tunes together while chowing down on dark chocolate treats.

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Well, wouldn’t it be nice to have written the Harry Potter books? I’d love to have so many people in love with my characters. That series changed lives. Plus, I wouldn’t mind getting those royalty checks. But I’m happy writing the books I’m writing. I love thinking about what my friends on Camellia Beach are doing and what trouble is brewing on my small Southern seaside town.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Every now and again, a person in my life will find themselves on the pages of a book I’ve written. But that’s not common. Of course traits and mannerisms I’ve seen in real life might show up in a character. But for the most part, the characters in my books develop themselves.

What really freaks me out is when I meet a person in real life who is exactly like a character in one of my books. And I mean exactly the same, with the same job, same childhood experiences, the same look and mannerisms. It’s happened to me twice now. And it’s crazy! I’ve learned not to tell the person I’ve met that I’d written a character in a book that is them. And I mean, that’s you. Really. It is! That kind of information never seems to go over well.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

I think I was born with this dream to write books. It’s one of my earliest memories. It took a while to build up the courage to chase my dream though. I earned college degrees in wildlife biology and public administration and worked as an environmental urban planner for several years before quitting my job and writing novels fulltime.

I love exploring stories and how various characters will react in difficult situations. When the writing is going well, my heart races and a smile tugs at my lips as I realize I’m doing exactly what I was born to do.
