Book Excerpt:

As
he approached, he sized up the building. Nothing about it made him think of
Beth. It had a slightly neglected air, as if the owner didn’t have the time,
energy or money to spend on it. He contrasted that with the Stillwater
house she had lived in. That had been as neat as wax. Being organized seemed to
come effortlessly to Beth, spilling over into how she dressed, her surroundings
and how she dealt with other people. Vincente wondered, not for the first time,
if the reason she had struggled with their relationship was because she
couldn’t neatly package up her feelings for him. When they were together there
was no controlling what they felt. It had always been raw, primal…and
incredible.
The
thought spurred his feet up the front step. His heart was pounding so loud it
almost drowned out the sound of his knock on the door. Prepared for
disappointment, his nerves—already under intense pressure—were ratcheted up to
crisis level when he heard a voice calling out.

“Did
you forget something, Detective ?” It wasn’t just any voice. It was Beth’s
voice.

He
wondered how she would react if she checked who it was through the peephole in
the door. Her words indicated she thought Laurie had come back again and he
heard a key turn in the lock immediately after she spoke.

The
door swung open and the smile on her lips faded. As she gazed at him in shock,
Vincente took a moment to drink in her appearance. Her hair was shorter, just
reaching her shoulders now instead of the waist-length mass in which he had
loved to bury his hands. It was scraped back into an unflattering ponytail. She
looked thinner. And tired, definitely tired. Almost to the point of exhaustion.
But maybe the reason for that was sitting on her hip.

The
baby wore pink sweatpants and a T shirt with butterflies embroidered all over.
Not quite a toddler, she was a perfect little girl. Her black hair clustered in
a halo of curls around her head and she studied Vincente with eyes that were
huge, dark and framed by thick, spiky lashes. The hint of olive to her skin and
the full ruby lips were additional confirmation of his first suspicion. It was
like looking in a mirror .

Vincente
almost took a step back in shock as he gazed at his daughter.

Interview with Jane Godman

How did you come up with name of this book?
This is a romantic suspense story and getting the right title took a while. The book was originally called “Return to Stillwater”, but that didn’t really give a strong enough feel of what the book was all about. My editor and I tried out several different titles before we came up with “Secret Baby, Second Chance”. It really does sum up the romantic part of the story. As for why the baby is a secret…well that’s where the suspense element comes in.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading! I have very eclectic tastes. I read anything from Jane Austen to Stephen King and everything in between. I do enjoy romance (of course) and I’ll admit I feel a bit cheated if that’s missing from a book. If I had to choose a favorite genre it would be thrillers. I love a good mystery, one that keeps me guessing until the last page.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I don’t mind some background noise, but I couldn’t cope with a very noisy environment. I’d find that too distracting. I’m fine with silence. I often write early in the morning when no one else is around and that’s very peaceful. It’s my most productive time.
What do you feel you can accomplish with this book?
This is the third book in a series (there are more to come) and I think readers know what to expect from a Jane Godman romantic suspense story. Heat, heart, twists and turns, and memorable characters. This story gives them all of those things and more. It packs a powerful emotional punch.
The first person the review it on Goodreads said, “Really should be more than 5 stars for this book!” That’s what I hope to achieve. I’d like everyone to come away feeling the same connection to the characters and their story.

What is your next project?
I have three Harlequin Nocturne (paranormal) books coming out in 2018. They tell the stories of a group of rock star shifters who are taking the mortal world by storm in more ways than one.
I also have another Harlequin Romantic Suspense coming in April 2018. It’s part of the popular Coltons mini-series and tells the story of a search and rescue cop and his K-9 partner.
Finally, there will be more stories in the Sons of Stillwater series, but I don’t have release dates for them yet.
