Excerpt Two:
The Freelancing Boom
Freelancing is also now big business. In the United States, 53 million people or 34 per cent of the workforce report doing freelance work. In the U.K., it is estimated that there are 1.4 million freelancers and growing. Across the European Union, the shifting trend of moving from having a job to working directly for clients has shown explosive growth. Independent professionals, or iPros as we call them, represent the only growing segment of the labour market and a significant positive economic force in post-recession Europe.
These iPros represent 25 per cent of the workforce in professional, scientific and technical roles, and 22 per cent of all workers in arts and entertainment.
Standard employment is either unavailable or discarded as an option because of the requirement for conformity and the resultant smothering of creativity. More than a third (37 per cent) of E.U. citizens responding to a survey indicated they prefer to work independently, but they are held back by red tape, perceived lack of funding and skills, and a fear of failure.
In a research study called Future Working: The Rise of Europe’s Independent Professionals, author Patricia Leighton says, “There is a scarcity of support for those starting out as an iPro. The perceived unavailability of relevant and affordable information and advice has resulted in iPros being concerned with their lack of business skills.”
Surveys in both the U.S. and Canada suggest that by 2020 nearly half of the workforce will be comprised of freelancers, temporary, contract and on-call workers. Fifty per cent! When you combine the self-employed, the entrepreneurs who incorporate, and the freelancer or iPro cohort, this represents a significant economic shift.
This means that the majority of the workforce needs – or will soon need – some understanding of how to run a business. Because their livelihood depends on it.
