A Thousand Salt Kisses by Josie Demuth

Book Description for A Thousand Salt Kisses (Book #1):

Seventeen-year-old Crystal White is the new girl on Starfish Island. Dragged to the remote community by her environmental activist father, she is eager to find fun that doesn’t involve touching fish guts or listening to local folklore.

During a midnight swim with some new friends, Crystal is pulled out to sea by the waves. Convinced she’s going to drown; Crystal is rescued by Llyr, a handsome stranger. As she searches for him in the following weeks, she finds there may be more truth to the Starfish legends than she thought.

Over a sizzling rollercoaster summer, Llyr introduces Crystal to magic she’d only ever dreamed of. But as Crystal comes to love Starfish Island, it begins to drive her family apart. A nearby power plant is devastating local marine life, and her parents are stuck in the middle. As the magic and mundane parts of Crystal’s life converge, she finds herself risking everything to save Llyr, her family and herself.

Book Description for A Thousand Salt Kisses Later (Book #2):

The spellbinding sequel to A Thousand Salt Kisses.

Four years ago, Crystal White fell in love with Llyr, a prince of the magical mer colony living off the coast of Starfish Island. For one summer, he enchanted her with stories of jeweled palaces and underwater gardens, but then he left, returning beneath the waves with her heart in tow.

Now, graduated and with no job in sight, Crystal is forced to go back to the island she thought she had left in the past. By the sea again, she realizes she is far from over her first love, and when an opportunity arises to contact the merfolk, Crystal can’t resist.

Once more with the mer, Crystal is forced to come to terms with the fact that Llyr has moved on, and also with her own magical secret that has endangered her life, his throne, and every mer kingdom. Working against all odds, she has to try to save the people she has come to love and—if she can—rekindle the romance of her first summer on Starfish Island.

My review:
The main Characters in the book are Crystal and Llyr. Crystal is 17 and from London. Her father decides to retire and move the family to Starfish  Island. One night she is out with Friends and swims out to far in water. Just when she thinks she will drown Llyr appears and takes her back into shore. Llyr disappears as soon as a friend show up finding Crystal in the waters edge.

Crystal begins her search for Llyr and along the way learns a lot about the mermaid loremainly from a fisherman named George. When Crystal does finally catch up with Llyr he takes her on a magical journey.

Yes my book description is kind of vague but I do not want to give the story away.

I will be giving this book 4 stars.  The book started off a bit slow for me but it did pick up rather quickly with a few slow spots along the way. The book does come filled with lots of situations and of course lore. Crystals parents are not getting along, first love, all on top of teenage angst. I do feel this book would be more enjoyable for a older teen girl then a older woman but it is still a pretty good read.

Interview with Josie Demuth
If you were stuck on a deserted island, which 3 books would you want with you?
Wuthering Heights, Bridget Jones’ Diary and The Little Mermaid.

Describe your series in one sentence.
A fast-paced ‘mermance’ about a young English girl and a hot mysterious man – who just so happens to spend an awful lot of time in the sea!
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
I would say I got my inspiration from primarily from the setting – the magical Westcountry, England, which is saturated in myths and legends, and also from other paranormal YA/NA romance like True Blood!
Why did you choose to write about mermaids?
They are awesome creatures, but I think they are under-explored in books, despite being so popular and so embedded in mythology all over the world. I had lots of ideas about the mer-world and wanted to give them a really interesting ancient, mythological background, but put them in a modern context.
If you could put yourself as a character in your book, who would you be?
I imagine it would be Crystal, as she has all the fin, I mean fun. She is sweet and sensitive, but very emotional and that doesn’t help as she goes through some extremely dramatic times.

There are many books out there about....What makes yours different?

I think the mer-lore is especially unique, and completely different from what we have read about before.  I also think the book is quite an accurate portrayal of how it really is being a young adult; the messy nights out, the emotions, the insecurities that may make you squirm, but that we actually all experience. Also, although Crystal can hold her own and survives all her highs and lows, she is not the typical ‘bad-ass’ heroine we see regularly today. I really enjoy that type of character, but see Crystal as quite real, and I know many of my young Wattpad readers can really relate to her and all the emotions she experiences.

If you could travel back in time, where would you go? Who would you meet?
I always love this question! So many places, but if I had to pick somewhere I’d go back to the Robin Hood days. I love that guy and when I was little I used to try to build a time machine with my Meccano, so I could go back in time and meet Maid Marion and Robin Hood.

  1. I enjoyed not only this book but the book 2 in the series. I love books that take me away from reality.
