Virtual Excerpt Tour for Promise Lodge by Charlotte Hubbard

Promise Lodge
by Charlotte Hubbard

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Amish/Inspirational Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Energetic widow Mattie Bender Schwartz is working day and night to get Promise Lodge going. She’s also hoping the change will help her son Noah’s heart to heal after his broken engagement. But his former fiancée, Deborah, is looking for a fresh start too. Filled with regret, and cast out by her dat for a reason she can’t yet reveal, Deborah can only pray Noah will forgive her foolishness.

Deborah is the last person Noah expected to show up at Promise Lodge. But with her cruel words still ringing in his head, he’s reluctant to accept her apology—even if the Old Order ways demand he try. If only he could obey Christ’s most important commandment: love one another. But one thing is certain—his mother and aunts, and their beloved Preacher Amos, will do their best to help him get there.

EXCERPTS (Exclusive Excerpt):
Deborah awoke with a start to discover that the sunrise was already a bright pink blush on the horizon. The salty-sweet aroma of bacon mingling with the fragrances of coffee and cinnamon told her that breakfast preparations were well underway, so she splashed her face at the sink and dressed quickly. Her body felt heavy from lack of sleep and her eyes stung from crying, but she couldn’t let her worries overwhelm her.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from The Lord, which made Heaven and Earth, she reminded herself. If God be for me, who can be against me?

Deborah arranged her kapp over her freshly wound bun and resolutely smoothed its long strings down the front of her lavender dress. She could do this. She could make herself so useful—could paint so carefully and efficiently—that Preacher Amos and the others would be glad she was here even if Noah wanted nothing more to do with her.

She swung open the cabin door and shrieked, nearly tripping over a body. And then she saw the gun. “Noah! I didn’t know you were—”

Queenie sprang up from Noah’s lap, barking loudly, as though to insist she had not fallen asleep on the job.

“Sorry,” Noah muttered as he rolled away from Deborah, into the grass.

When he stood up, with his hair sticking out in clumps and his shirt half untucked beneath his suspenders, Deborah realized he’d slept in the clothes he’d worn yesterday. But why did Noah have a rifle? Had he thought she might steal away in the night—or steal from the lodge? Had he lost all trust in her?

“Coyotes,” he rasped in a voice heavy with sleep. “Come on, Queenie, let’s go. Enough of your racket.”

Noah hurried toward the lodge with his dog at his side, leaving Deborah at a loss. Of all the places where he could have positioned himself last night, why had he fallen asleep outside her door? Rosetta kept her chickens and goats in a shed on the other side of the lodge, so wouldn’t coyotes have been prowling over there rather than near her cabin?

Deborah started toward the kitchen door at the back of the lodge, wondering if she would ever understand how Noah’s mind worked. She used to think she knew him inside and out, but either he’d changed dramatically since moving to Promise or she had totally misunderstood him when they’d been courting.

Her unsettling thoughts disappeared as she entered the kitchen. Rosetta stood at the stove, turning strips of bacon that sizzled in a cast iron skillet while Christine set a table in the dining room and Mattie pulled a large pan from the oven. Deborah didn’t want to interrupt their snappy rendition of “Simple Gifts”, but she couldn’t help exclaiming over the largest cinnamon rolls she’d ever seen.

“I’d intended to help you make breakfast,” she protested as she gazed at Mattie’s rolls. They were baked to puffy perfection, spiraled around a filling of raisins, cinnamon, and nuts, and they smelled so good. “What’s the occasion, that you’ve made such luscious—surely you haven’t been up since the wee hours to bake these for an everyday breakfast,” Deborah stammered.

Mattie chuckled as she set the pan on a rack. “You are the occasion, Deborah!”

“I was looking for a reason to try this new recipe—testing it for when we have new residents eating with us until their homes are built,” Rosetta explained. “And what better reason could I have than you? We made the dough last night and kept it in the refrigerator, which shortened the process this morning.”

“You can stir up the glaze, if you’d like, ” Mattie said, gesturing toward a bowl of powdered sugar with a measuring cup of milk beside it. “We’d never think you were shirking, Deborah. You’re not made that way.”

Deborah was so stunned that she could only gawk at them. “You—you baked these rolls for me?”

Rosetta grinned as she placed crisp strips of bacon on a platter. “I call it planning for happiness,” she said, her brown eyes sparkling. “We’ve been so busy, working to keep everyone clothed and fed while we’re putting our new settlement together, that it’s time to celebrate our progress—and your visit! All work and no play will make us dull girls.”

“And cranky,” Mattie added with a laugh. “We were all getting a little crisp around the edges, so it’s time to ease up. To count our blessings.”

“Jah, God didn’t create His world without taking a break, and neither should we,” Christine reasoned as she spooned coffee into the percolator basket. “And now we’ve got a head start on tomorrow’s breakfast, too.”

“If you hide some of these rolls where the men won’t find them,” Mattie added with a laugh.

As the three sisters gazed fondly at her, Deborah’s heart swelled with gratitude. “It’s so gut to see you all again,” she murmured. “Things haven’t been the same at home without you and the girls.”

“We’ve missed you, too, dear,” Mattie said wistfully. “While we believe we’ve done the right thing by starting a new colony, it’s been harder than we anticipated to leave our friends behind.”

My Review:
I do not often read books known to have a religious flair to them, I am more into paranormal and romance. At first I passed this book up, but the more I thought about the blurb the more I wanted to read it. The blurb just made this book intriguing to me. Now that I am finished with the book, I must admit, I am so glad I changed my mind. I will also be looking into other books like this one.
I really enjoyed the book and would love this to turn into a series. I would love to know more of the story on how the Promise Lodge turns out once it is really up and running. I made friends with the characters in this book the few days I spent reading it.
Contrary to my belief when I first looked at this book, there really was not that much religion in the book. And I have nothing against religion, after all my Father was a ordained minister. I just usually find that religion based books are usually more of a Sunday sermon then a story. This book was a wonderful story.
In the book 3 Old Order Amish sisters, 2 are widows one is a Maidel, their children and a friend who happens to be a Preacher, all sell their farms and buy property to start their own colony.  Which causes lots of slack with their friends they left behind as well as their religious leaders in their old colony.  The family and friend set out to make their wish for a new colony come true. The property they buy used to be a old church camp. There is a large lodge house, several cabins, barns and more but everything need lots of repairs. As they all work on the place another old friend shows up. Deborah is also one of the boys ex-fiance.
As the story goes on, you get to see if Noah and Deborah work out their problems, if they are able to fix up the old camp and make a go of their dreams.  It really is a very good story.
I really hope Ms. Hubbard decides to make a series out of this book. I would be the first one to read it if she did.

I was given my copy in exchange for a honest review. And honestly, I really really enjoyed this book.

Many moons ago—like, in 1983 while she was still a school librarian—Charlotte Hubbard sold her first story to True Story. Over the course of her writing career, she has sold nearly 50 books—most recently, Amish romance series she’s written as Charlotte Hubbard or Naomi King.
Charlotte lived in Missouri for most of her life, so her Amish stories are set in imaginary Missouri towns. These days she lives in St. Paul, MN with her husband of 40 years and their Border collie, Ramona.

The porch boards creaked behind me. I spun, but not fast enough and a hand clamped over my mouth. I was yanked backward to land against a hard chest then dragged into the darkness of the far corner of the porch where the light failed to illuminate and a tree concealed us from the street.

My scream came out muffled and barely audible.

“Shhh,” he murmured against my ear.

Connor?

His warm breath wafted over the side of my neck and goose bumps popped along my skin. But it wasn’t from fear, well maybe a little, but it was more an awareness. Like my body awakened to his touch.

“They put a man on you.”

Ernie. He’d seen Ernie. Connor managed to get by an ex-navy SEAL. It shouldn’t surprise me. He excelled at being invisible. But the question was had Ernie seen him?

“He’s good. Took two hours before I had the chance.” And he’d always been patient. “You going to stay quiet if I remove my hand?”

I did my best to nod, but his grip on me was constricting and I only managed a slight dip of my chin. His hand slid from my mouth to the curve of my neck where his fingers enclosed, not harsh, but with purpose.

His rough whisper rumbled, “Can’t leave yet. Tried to. Bike found its way back here.” His body stiffened. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing.”

Oh, God. I squeezed my eyes shut as tears pooled. I was uncertain what he’d do to me right now. He was on edge, but I couldn’t stop the overwhelming need to curl into his arms and take his pain away.

His body stiffened and his forearm across my breasts squeezed. I whimpered under the pressure, but didn’t struggle.

“I’m sorry. Fuck, I’m so sorry about your family, sweet-baby.”

My breath locked and a tear teetered then fell. Wetness trailed down my cheek. I hadn’t heard him call me that in eleven years and it was as if I were back there with him, falling in love all over again.

His fingers splayed on my neck gently applied more pressure. It wasn’t restricting, but it was controlling and I knew he’d easily cut off air if he wanted to. But I trusted that Connor would never willingly hurt me.

It was the graze of his lips on the edge of my jaw that sent my heart rocketing and my belly into a perpetual whoosh. Confusion and desire clashed as my body and mind fought against one another.

“You should’ve chosen me,” he murmured.

I had chosen him. Everything I’d done was me choosing him. But that wasn’t what he was talking about.

“You should’ve chosen me,” he repeated then nibbled on the lobe of my ear, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin. “Why? Why didn’t you kill me instead?”

Deluxe Watercolor 36 Color Pencil Set with Roll-Up Canvas Pencil Wrap by Us Art Supply

I love coloring adult coloring books and I love doodling especially when I am on the phone. I have been using pens, gel pens, markers, and any other writing implements I can find on my coloring books. I go through gel pens very quickly. I am not crazy about using markers, they tend to bleed through some papers. Gel pens are expensive also. Coloring pencils will last about 3 to 5 times longer then gel pens so by using these I am saving money. There are 36 pencils in the set all in different colors which also give me more color options then with gel pens. These pencils can be blended as well which you cannot do with pens. These come pre-sharpened and ready to go. I love the pencil wrap. All of the pencils fit nicely into their own spot. Th can can be folded or rolled up and has a snap closure to keep the pencil secure. I really like this set of pencils. The wide array of colors, and the quality. The leads are strong and do not run down and need sharpened with each use. These would also be great for more then just coloring, they would be nice for drawing as well.

Baby Wrap Carrier from Bambini & ME

My Daughter loves using baby wraps and carrying her baby the hands free way. She really loves this baby wrap. When my kids were babies I don't think they even had baby wraps, if they did I had never seen one. They had the kind that was like a baby back pack but nothing like this. When it arrived I of course wanted to check it out. I opened the package and took it out, as I started rolling it out I was shocked at just how much fabric was there it was huge. 16 1/2 feet long and 21 inches wide. I was like Dang, is thing a king size comforter or what. So then I took it to my Daughter and made her show me exactly what you do with 16 1/2 feet of cloth and how it worked. I was amazed at how fast she had all that fabric wrapped around her nicely, neatly and sturdily with my Grand Son all tucked in.  She says to me" See Mom nothing to it". I am still personally lost on how she done it but it works and she is thrilled with it.

The material is very soft, like a t-shirt material. The edges are stitched to keep if from unraveling. This is washer and dryer safe, and did not shrink up when it was washed and dried.  With the size of this baby carrier it is fine for all sizes of mom and baby. Should fit anyone. This is great for a new mommy and would make a great baby shower gift.

Excerpt:
Ben was tired, but he was excited when he woke up on Monday morning. It was Casey’s day off and Coach had given the team the week off, minus a team meeting this afternoon, since they had another month until the NCAA Championships.
Emma’s school started at seven forty-five which meant if he got to Casey’s around eight, they could spend the whole day just relaxing.
When he arrived the garage was shut, so he walked up to the front door. Before he could knock, though, the door swung open and Casey jumped on him, wrapping her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist.
“My hero,” she said in a terrible southern accent. Then she started giving him little pecks all over his head and face.
He walked inside with her still wrapped around him and kicked the door shut. Laughing, he said, “Who is this strange girl, and what did you do with Casey?”She continued on in the southern accent. “You won the race for your beloved and claimed victory.”
Ben sat her on the backside of the couch and looked down at her. “What on earth has gotten into you?”
“You, Sir Runner. Now, take me, take me now.” Casey puckered up her lips playfully and Ben laughed.
Ben leaned in to give her a quick kiss, thinking she might taste or smell like alcohol, because right now that was the only explanation he could come up with. She tasted like…cookies.
He looked around the room and to his right, sitting on the kitchen counter, he found his answer. He let go of Casey and she fell backwards onto the couch.
“Hey!” she said as she hit the couch cushion.
Ben walked over to the kitchen and picked up a small tub of Cookies ’n Cream ice cream and a bag of Fudge Filled Chewy Chips Ahoy. He held up both and looked over at Casey who was half-hiding, half-peering over the top of the couch. “Please tell me you are not eating cookies and ice cream at eight o’clock in the morning.”
Casey jumped over the couch and came running at Ben, a ball of sugar filled energy. She wrapped her arms around his waist, her legs around the back of his calves, and inched her way up his body. When she reached the top she bombarded his neck with kisses. “My hero,” she said. She stopped for a moment and looked at him with the most devious, sensual grin. She leaned in closer until there was almost no space between her lips and his. Then like a cheetah springing on a gazelle, she grabbed the ice cream with her left hand and the cookies with her right, hit the ground and took cover on the couch.
“You have serious problems,” Ben said.
Casey pulled out a cookie and dipped it in the ice cream and held it up for him to see. Then she started humming and dancing the cookie around like she was taunting him.
Ben took two steps, dove across the couch, snatched the cookie from her hand and shoved it in his mouth before she could barely move. She looked at him wide eyed and in complete silence and then jumped on him. They wrestled and tickled each other like five-year-olds, stopping every now and then for a quick cookie break.
This went on for about thirty more minutes and then she crashed on the floor next to him. Her head lay across his chest as he played with her hair until eventually he crashed too.

Interview with Wesley Banks:

Why I Became A Writer

I’m not sure of the exact moment I considered myself a writer.
It may have been in elementary school when I was the first student in Florida to get a perfect score on the state writing assessment test, after writing about an apple that came to life, jumped out of a lunch box, and walked down to the principal’s office for a chat.
It may have been when I won a poetry contest in the fifth grade. It may have been in high school when I started writing essays for fun after reading Emerson and Thoreau. Or, it could have been in college when I finally wrote my first fiction novel, which was absolutely terrible.
What I’m really trying to say is, it’s hard to say if I became a writer at some specific point, or if I always was a writer.

3 reasons I will always write

So, instead of trying to explain why I became a writer, here are three reasons I will always write.
Wisdom. I’ve always believed that you should have a continual pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. I can’t say for sure that I’ve become smarter or wiser over the years, but I’m able to work out my thoughts much quicker after writing them down.
Stories. I love stories. I believe it was James Patterson who said, “There are great writers, and there are great storytellers. I aim for the ladder.” I’m in the same boat as Mr. Patterson. I don’t think I’ll ever have the eloquence of Emerson, or the edge of London, but I love stories. My mind is continually running through different plot lines and characters. Eventually I hope to write a really good story.
Inspiration. There are two things that inspire people: words and actions. Not to say I don’t want to be a man of action, but I find that well written or spoken words have a way of sticking with you for a lifetime.

As I said above. I’m not sure why I became a writer. But, it is for absolute certainty that I will always write.

Withering Hope by Layla Hagen Audio Review

Withering Hope
by Layla Hagen
Publication Date: January 15, 2015
Genres: Contemporary, Romance
WitheringHopeeBook
Aimee’s wedding is supposed to turn out perfect. Her dress, her fiancé and the location—the idyllic holiday ranch in Brazil—are perfect. But all Aimee’s plans come crashing down when the private jet that’s taking her from the U.S. to the ranch—where her fiancé awaits her—defects mid-flight and the pilot is forced to perform an emergency landing in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

With no way to reach civilisation, being rescued is Aimee and Tristan’s—the pilot—only hope. A slim one that slowly withers away, desperation taking its place. Because death wanders in the jungle under many forms: starvation, diseases. Beasts. As Aimee and Tristan fight to find ways to survive, they grow closer. Together they discover that facing old, inner agonies carved by painful pasts takes just as much courage, if not even more, than facing the rainforest. Despite her devotion to her fiancé, Aimee can’t hide her feelings for Tristan—the man for whom she’s slowly becoming everything. You can hide many things in the rainforest. But not lies. Or love.

Withering Hope is the story of a man who desperately needs forgiveness and the woman who brings him hope. It is a story in which hope births wings and blooms into a love that is as beautiful and intense as it is forbidden.

About Layla Hagen

Welcome! My name is Layla Hagen and I am a Contemporary Romance author.

I fell in love with books when I was nine years old, and my love affair with stories continues even now, many years later. I write romantic stories and can’t wait to share them with the world. And I drink coffee. Lots of it 😀

My Review
This book actually took me through a passel of emotions. I was happy, I was sad, I was even scared at times, the epilogue had me in tears.
The stories main characters are Aimee and Tristan. Tristan is Aimee's fiance's pilot and he is flying her back to the family ranch when their plane crashes in the Rain Forest. They are stuck for about 4 months. The story is all about their time in the jungle, and the love that grows between them. This is a story of survival and love.
Layla Hagen ha done a great job with this book. It grabbed me and didn't let me go. I actually listened to the audiobook. There are 3 narrators and they do a wonderful job. They really bring their characters to life. It is almost like watching a movie without looking at the screen. There is just enough description of people, places, and things to give you a really good minds eye picture but not enough to bore you. The story flows along nicely, and made me cringe when I had to stop the story walk away from it, even for a minute.
I just with there hadn't been so many darn snakes.
