Title: Miss Behave (The Anderson Family Series Book 1)

Author: Traci Highland

Publisher: Cheshire Lane Press

Pages: 330

Genre: Romantic Comedy

She’s great at giving advice, too bad she never takes it…

Piper Anderson wants to be a serious journalist at a serious paper
covering serious news. Instead, she’s stuck at the Pendleton Falls
Herald, where her massive investigative skills are wasted penning the
paper’s advice column, Miss Behave.

Her shot at a meaty story comes when she’s assigned to write up a
profile of a local business, Brookes Jewelers. She is determined to
write the piece so she can use the article to impress a real paper.

Unfortunately Hunter Brookes, co-owner of Brookes Jewelers and the
Pendleton Falls Herald, is rather persistent, in his own hot little way,
that the piece should be nothing more than a glorified sales pitch.

But when diamonds disappear, Piper may get the chance to do a real
investigation, leading her to confront family secrets and worst of all,
turn to her mother for help.

Piper soon realizes that there is more to Mr. Brookes than a tight
ass and a ridiculous fascination with name tags. Together they deal with
roasted pigs, crazy cat ladies, and gun-toting fashionistas.

In all the chaos, they just might find the one thing that neither one was looking for: true love.

Excerpt:

Dear Miss Behave,
Last weekend I was at the pool
with the children, and there was a woman naked and walking around the locker
room.
I hate to be prissy, but to be
naked around young children like that just isn’t right.  She comes to the pool regularly and I am not
the only one who has happened upon her strolling around the locker room without
clothes.  Now I know there are showers
and that people change in locker rooms, but showers should be taken while
wearing bathing suits and there are private changing rooms that are clearly
marked.
How can I convey to her the
accepted rules of decency before any of our children become hopelessly
corrupted?
Sincerely,

-Agape at the AquaPark

Dear Agape,
Do please get over yourself.
People shower naked.  If you choose not
to, then I assume you probably smell and your skin is beset by odd rashes.
I suggest that you buy your
kids an ice-cream and treat yourself to a margarita.  Life is short, darling. Lighten up.
Sincerely,
Miss Behave

Interview Traci Highland

How did you come up with name of this book?
The book was named after the advice column of the main character, Piper.  Piper wants to be a serious journalist but was assigned the advice column, Miss Behave.  Piper hates writing the column and decides that she is going to give the worst advice possible and hopefully get taken off the assignment.  For example, here is one of the columns:

Dear Miss Behave,
I met this bearded god, Matt, the other week and am completely in love.  The only thing is that he lives in the country on a farm and I’m not so sure about farm life.  I’m all about sunshine and the great outdoors, but a farm? Let’s not go crazy.
But he loves me and I love him and I don’t know what to do.
Sincerely,
City Girl

Dear City Girl,
The other week?  That’s barely enough time to know where or not he uses that spray before he poops, pumpkin!
You really must get to know him a bit more before throwing aside the trappings of civilization and going all Green Acres.
But if, say, six months from now you are both still completely smitten, well, then, don’t let a little manure get in the way of true love.
Love and Whatever they Drink on Farms,
-Miss Behave

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
All the time!  Well, I love romantic comedies, like Sophie Kinsella and Kristen Higgins, of course, and read a lot of romance in general, contemporary and historical.  Also, I have an undying love for urban fantasy. Kelly Armstrong, Anne Bishop, Kim Harrison, all are big favorites of mine.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I have to write in absolute silence, I have no idea as to why!  But I can edit to music, which is odd, because I really feel like the books come together during the editing process.

What do you feel you can accomplish with this book?
I want to make as many people laugh as I can.

What is your next project?
My next project is the sequel to Miss Behave, Miss Management, that focuses on Piper’s sister, Mags, and her ill temper.

Arousing Consequences: (How it begins)

Choices. They can be simple or frivolous…or life altering. There are always helpful hints leading you to the right choice, but do we always accept them for what they are? I certainly haven’t. I made a choice. A choice I made after my father died that led me to make major decisions, which in turn, brought undesirable characters into my safe life.
Here I am, sitting in a courthouse waiting to face my monster. Not the hide under your bed imaginary monster, but the destroy your life kind of monster. Six months ago, I would have never imagined being here. At this time, staying within my safe comfortable limits was more important than being hurt once again.
Hurt that came from those “safe” choices. Choices that everyone makes, never thinking it could ultimately affect the people they love.
Because of this, I find myself sitting here, on this cold wooden bench, nervously waiting for my name to be called. I just want today to be over so we can move on with our lives…he doesn’t even know-
            “Karisma Washington?”

Oh, there’s the clerk. Standing, I think about what led up to today…the day that everything changed. Today, I face the consequences.

dreams. My future. My soul. Karsima. Our life together thus far
hasn’t been blissful and let’s face it, she’s been
stalked…shot…and above all, deceived. By everyone, including
myself.

Seeing
her leave, carrying my child only intensifies my desire to keep her
in my life and there’s only one way to do that. My secrets have to
be revealed. As our saga continues, I can only pray that our love

Taking
back control.

I’m
sick of this! It’s been a year of secrets that have revealed
themselves at the cost of my life. Who knew that meeting the man of
my dreams…my future…the other half of my soul would uncover such
turmoil. Turmoil that may be beyond our control, but our future can’t
survive until the secrets of the past are diminished…or
killed.

That
secret being Thomas Malcolm.

That
lowlife snake who has tried to destroy my father, Jackson, and me…my
family. I’ve even had to kill someone because of him! I’m done
with this. Done with letting Malcolm run our lives. Done living in
fear. Done waiting for his next formidable move. It’s my turn. And
I’m nobody’s pawn! It’s time to end him…end this…Inferno.

Okay,
so I'm not one of those people that woke up one day and decided, "you
know what, I think I'll write a book today." Who am I kidding,
yes I am. However, I came to the decision because my fiancé was
struggling with his MS, and sometimes when things that heavy are
going on in your life, you need an outlet. So, that's just what I
did. I started with just writing poems, which turned into short
stories, then what do you know...a whole book! Trust me, I'm no
genius! But I feel you might enjoy some of the things I decided to
put on paper. Some may think, "My goodness she's got a foul
mouth!" Especially anyone that knows me, but what can I say, I
must've been a sailor in my past life!

Anyway,
enjoy!

Excerpt:
EXCERPT 1
In an effort to mask her embarrassment, she raised the glass to her lips.
“Wait.” He held out his glass to hers. “Here’s to taking chances.”
She could drink to that. She toasted his glass and sipped, appreciating the way the wine both chilled her throat and warmed her chest on the way down.
He drank his beer and set it down. “So, you know I couldn’t help overhearing your date with Patrick.”
“Yeah, we covered that.”
“And I know we only officially met a few minutes ago, but I feel like—what with the eavesdropping and all—we’ve gotten to know each other a little.”
“Or you’ve learned my most embarrassing secret. I only know you develop software and—based on how well you know the lay of the land—you apparently spend a lot of your time hanging out at a bar.”
“Which is pretty much all there is to know about me. Except that I like watching both sports and nerdy TV shows, and that I wish I could have a dog, but my apartment won’t let me.”
“You’re right,” she said. “We’re practically married. Should we spend Christmas with your family or mine?”
He snorted. “Now that we’re friends, and I know that you need a date to your reunion and you’re on a deadline, I wanted to run something by you.”
Her heart fluttered. Was this guy she just met going to help her get a date? No, that was crazy. But maybe he had some advice. She’d been sarcastic when she’d asked for it earlier, but it really couldn’t hurt.
In fact, it might be better coming from a stranger than any of her work friends. It would certainly keep Nina from spreading the details through the rumor mill.
“I’m listening. Not that I know if you have the credentials to give lectures on—”
“It’s not a lecture. And I’m not a dating expert. Well, not exactly. I’m not an expert,” he repeated and cleared his throat. “But I have done a lot of research on dating. Or at least my company has, and I’ve used it for my job.”
“I thought you build apps.”
“We do. Our new app—one that’s coming out next month—is a dating app.”
“Like Tinder?”
“Kind of, but not really.” He launched into an explanation about how the app was part game, part matchmaker. That it helped connect people who’d really get along without making the process cumbersome. So far, it sounded good.
But how did she fit into this?
“We’re actually trying to find one more person to try it out.”
Oh. He needed a guinea pig. “Why?”
“We’re close to the launch date. While our feedback has been good, it hasn’t been personal. We haven’t been able to see it from the inside.”
“Why doesn’t one of your employees try it?”
He shook his head. “That’s not objective enough. We need someone who can give us an inside look, while not influencing the outcome. Someone local. Someone who can find a good match that we can brag about to our investors. Someone with a good story.”
Someone desperate enough to give it a try with an audience. Someone like her.
She could see the logic. That didn’t mean she liked where this was going. “So, you want me to try your app and report back.”

EXCERPT 2
She must be crazy. While she’d cut someone out of her life for calling her that, it was the only logical explanation Haleigh could come up with as she downloaded a beta copy of XO On Demand onto her phone.
Only the day before she’d been set up on her first blind date ever. Now, here she was, giving online dating a shot.
What a difference a day made.
She’d been completely serious about never considering online dating. She knew people who had tried it—and successfully. Not that she judged, but it seemed like such a direct and confrontational way to meet someone. By putting your profile out there, you were proclaiming to the world that you were on the prowl.
In another five minutes, she’d be one of those people. After she finished the setup and the survey Ian assured her would be fun, she’d have her first string of potential dates. Brought to her through the magic of technology.
All because she couldn’t stand the idea of her classmates judging her.
If she was one of her own students, she’d tell them it didn’t matter. That after high school, no one cared what people thought. And she’d be lying.
The download completed, and the app opened on her screen. She followed Ian’s directions to create her account. His play-by-play wasn’t entirely necessary. The directions were pretty self-explanatory, but he seemed eager to help. It eased her nerves. Some.
“This where it gets interesting.” Ian clicked a button, taking her to the next page. “Instead of having you answer fifty questions about who you are and what you want, we’ve created a quiz of sorts. Would you rather go camping or stay in a five-star hotel? Which breakfast looks most appetizing? What—”
“I’ve got it.” She flashed him a grin to soften her tone, but she needed to concentrate.
There were so many questions. None of them were too complicated or earth-shattering, but she had to choose correctly. Her future lineup of men depended on it.
Question One: Which of these dishes would you order right now?
She selected a basket of chicken strips with fries.
“That’s what I’d pick, too,” Ian said. “What do you use for dipping?”
“Honey mustard.”
“Barbecue.” He shook his head. “I knew there had to be something wrong with you.”
At least his teasing made this a little less nerve-racking. “You guys aren’t going to use these answers and sell my information to restaurants now, are you?”
“Of course not.” But he tapped his chin thoughtfully. “It isn’t a bad idea, though.”
Question Two: Where would you rather spend a Saturday afternoon?
She didn’t even have to consider this one. She picked “Binge-watching TV in my bed.”
“What’s your go-to show?”
“You heard that one last night,” she reminded him. “Doctor Who. But I’ve been known to do a Lord of the Rings or Star Wars marathon from time to time”
“Which episode is your favorite?”
“Five.” That’s what everyone always said. There was probably something about the bad knocking down the good at the end of the Empire Strikes Back that made a person seem deep. After Greg had explained that to her years ago, she’d made it her customary response.
Only when she was being totally honest, she’d admit she liked Return of the Jedi best. She loved those Ewoks.

After Bess Silver had settled into her new home in Pineview she thought her biggest problem would be settling into a new school. She was surprised to learn that it was a one room school house which was different from what she was used to.

That all changed when Megan Skye, her best friend and cousin, dashed into their kitchen late one afternoon with exciting news. Megan's father discovered an old cabin, hidden behind a wall, when he started doing kitchen renovations. Megan asked him to take the suitcases, ledgers and trunk they found over to Bess instead of throwing them out. Clues turn up in the suitcases and in a secret compartment in the cabin which leave Bess puzzled. When she first looked around the cabin she sees a ghostly figure that disappears in an instant but is as real as Megan. Dreams about the cabin and occupants haunt Bess. These feel so real that she can't shake the feeling that she was actually near them.

Who is the figure that Bess saw in the cabin? What is she trying to tell her? Why is she having dreams about the old cabin? Will Bess be able to figure  out who the mysterious figure is? Or would these secrets remain secrets forever?

The Mystery of the Hidden Cabin is the sequel to Bess's Magical Garden and can be read on it's own.

Bess's mother moves them to Pineview, away from her best friend Megan, and she terribly misses her. Six months earlier, Bess’s father died in a car crash, and she’s also in the midst of recovering from the final stages of polio. She's in a sad and lonely place.

From the moment she and her mother settle into their new home, Bess hears whispering voices and encounters a ghostly figure in the well-kept garden and in her dreams. She can’t make sense of everything and so shares her observations with Megan by writing her regular letters.

During the summer, she makes new friends, including an orange and white tomcat that she names Pumpkin, and her new neighbour Josie. With the help of Mrs. O’Toole, the woman who watches her, Bess continues to recover, both physically and emotionally. She becomes more and more curious about the garden and the unexplained clues that she finds there.

In Bess’s Magical Garden, Bess discovers her own true strengths through enduring life’s struggles. She - with Josie and Megan’s help - also finds some hidden items in the garden, including a map, that leave the girls with more questions than answers. Who was the figure that visited Bess? Will Bess and her friends be able to uncover the garden’s secrets? Or will those secrets be mysteries forever?

Marjorie (M.E.) Hembroff is the author of Bess's Magical Garden, a middle grade novel and picture book Gramma Mouse Tells a Story. Marjorie is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators,  and Writer's Guild of Alberta.

Marjorie has been an avid reader since early childhood and has always been imaginative. Growing up on a farm before television aided in her using her imagination to create a variety of pastimes. Stories formed in her mind but most of them were never written down until later in life. It wasn't until her children were growing up that she started to take art and writing courses. At that time, her writing improved and short stories formed. It was when she retired that the idea for Bess's Magical Garden surfaced.

After Marjorie's divorce she worked in the plant industry. First at a greenhouse and then looking after tropical plants in downtown offices. For awhile it looked like her adult children would never leave home but they have now all flown the nest and are having their own life's adventures. After retirement she moved to Strathmore where she lives with her pets.
