CHAPTER 1

He wasn’t much bigger than she was. With her shoes off, he was only eye level. She could get through him … she could. Like Stacy said, he was just a little punk—a creep—one of hundreds she’d encountered before. He was only trying to scare her, but it wouldn’t work. She could handle this—if only she could move her damn feet.

The click of the gun being cocked echoed in her head. A shiver shimmying up her spine, the filthy stranger’s grin widened as he neared and pressed the cold steel into the center of her forehead.

“No!” she screamed.

“Ya-yo-yes, little girl with no way to go but da-da-down.”

“But why? Why?”

“Because Daniel says so-so-so. It’s adios sad buh-bye time, so maybe you oughta cry.”

“Please,” she begged as tears streamed down her face. “Please don’t kill me. I’ll give you all I have. I will!”

“Haff to blonde hair and not much more. Me and Daniel, we’re goin’ to war, but yah-yu-you? You gonna start it!”

Sharp laughter knocked all thoughts from her head as a paralysis overtook her.

The man was crazy. Deranged. With no more time to think, she lunged forward, prepared to bash into him. A loud blast stopped her in her tracks and made her ears ring.

The impact of the bullet slammed her backwards. Staggering one unwieldy step, a blinding light lit up the alley as the bullet smashed through her skull. Her brain emptied and splattered onto the back wall. Limp, a numbness overtook her.

Was this it?

Her eyes crossed as she fell. Looking upward at the blackened sky, her question went answered.

She was dead before she hit the ground.

Interview with Leslie Wolfe

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

I get inspired by watching people interact with one another daily. I’m a very visual person, so when I see an image of something or someone, or even an image or a manifestation of an emotion, I get inspired. I could be sitting behind you in a theater, or waiting in line next to you at the Walmart checkout, and my imagination could run wild. What would you do if you were a cop investigating a murder? How would that scenario play with you starring in it, with the specifics of who you are? It’s that simple.

How did you do research for your book?

I do extensive research for all my books. I aim to provide accurate information on top of exciting entertainment. I’m also happy to be teaching something whenever I can, especially in fields of novelty and interest, not anything boring, I hope. My research starts online of course, web searches for Scholastic articles in the fields of interest, and I have been fortunate enough to secure the help and friendship of several researchers and scientists in various fields. As an established author, now it is much easier for me to run my draft by one or more of these wonderful people and then be ready to incorporate all their feedback, before going to print.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

While it is true I have become entirely dedicated to my writing for the past year and a half, I have spent the bulk of my career as a technology and operations expert, and I have decided cannot abandon my first career paths completely. So, I stay in touch. I am sitting on a couple of boards of directors for young enterprises in technology, and I stay connected to the business realm. The entrepreneurial spirit that I have enjoyed throughout my career injects vitality and determination to succeed in everything I do as a writer.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

Oh, there are so many answers to this question! Let’s look at a few. For one, I would go back to 2008 or earlier, and buy me a bunch of Amazon stock at the price of 20 bucks per share. On a more romantic side of things, I would go back to the 1980s, when music and life were so much fun. Sadly, no matter what the destination in time, as a woman I would only be able to go back to an era when women were not enjoying the level of empowerment they are today. Finally, as a writer, I would love to go back in time and get to meet Michael Crichton.

What is your next project?

I’m currently working on a psychological drama centered on the struggles of a Gulf War veteran. A bit of new, exciting territory for me, I’m enjoying every minute of the adventure!

“Exquisitely made,” he says. I spin around and receive my second jolt of the evening.
