My love is
wasted like gemstones in the dust, walked over by an oblivious shoe. It takes
many suffering years and layers of mountains to squeeze carbon into a precious
stone. Now that I’m polished and hard like a diamond, he doesn’t get to kick me
back into the dirt.

Men like
him don’t love women like me.
They don’t
love.
Period.

But he made
me.
He’ll live
with me.
Because
diamonds are forever.

(Diamonds
are Forever
concludes this trilogy. Diamonds in the Dust (Book 1) and Diamonds in the Rough
(Book 2) must be read to follow the story.)

Excerpt

Dragging
both hands over his head, he tilts his face to the ceiling and walks away from
me. “Fuck.” He stays at the far end of the room for a moment before turning
back to me. His hair is even wilder than before when he finally drops his arms
to his sides. A war rages in his eyes. For a minute, he’s not my kidnapper, but
the man who cares about me. He’s just a man making himself vulnerable by
opening up and dropping his defenses. “I don’t want to scare you, Zoe. After
your father—”
“Don’t.”
Sighing, he
comes back and picks up the medicine box. “I’m going to tell you a story. A
young man goes to a market and sees a beautiful woman admiring a precious
object. He can see she wants it, but when she opens her purse, she doesn’t have
enough money. This man, he was paid to abduct that woman. He has two choices.
He can either grab her, tie her up, and drag her away, or he can go up to her
and tell her how beautiful she is and buy her that precious object she wants so
much. He can do that for her and be kind, inviting her to dinner. They can have
a good time, have great sex. He can ask her to go away with him and knows
she’ll say yes. Tell me, Zoe. Which man is kinder? Which man is the most
selfless?”
“The honest
one,” I whisper.
A shutter
drops in front of his eyes. The man who was reaching out to me a second ago
retracts back into his shell. I mourn the loss, the almost-intimacy, but I
can’t lie to him. I can’t betray myself. I can’t strengthen his warped belief
that lies can smooth over his crimes.

After pasts riddled with pain, can Hadlee and Bryce let themselves love again?

Hadlee

He was the perfect vacation fling.

I needed to get laid and live a little. One night with him would revive my shattered heart and arouse my senses. I could cast aside all my inhibitions and let my lust guide me.

And the best part, I would never have to see him again…or so I thought.

Bryce

She was my last taste at freedom.

I used her, just like all the others that came before her. The women I chose to be with had only one purpose…to fulfill my needs, and then I was done.

But she was different. She put me off balance and got under my skin.

But what did it matter…it’s not like one night was going to change my future.

CHAPTER ONE:

Hadlee

It’s the very early hours of the morning, a few rays of sunshine are peeking in through the curtains at the sliding glass door, and I’m just waking up. There’s a gentle rocking to the ship, and I no longer hear the roar of the engines, so we must have arrived at our next port. Rolling onto my side, I immediately feel a throbbing in my head so intense, I moan in pain. I squeeze my closed eyes even tighter, willing the throbbing to ease as I take a few slow, deep breaths. Within moments, the pain eases, allowing me to snuggle in the covers and drift back to sleep.

As the ship sways, more and more sunlight pours through the curtains. I dread getting up, but coffee and a hot shower always help my headaches. The bed’s so warm and cozy, I can’t muster enough energy to move, let alone open my eyes. I drift in and out of sleep for a bit longer until I get the oddest sensation, I’m not alone in my bed. This sort of thing happens to me more often than I care to admit, but this time, the feeling is slightly different but not enough to alarm me. Thinking my mind is once again playing its usual tricks, I grab the cover tighter to my body and ease back into my pillow.

The mattress moves, and a muscular arm wraps protectively across my waist, pulling me flush against his body. I’m not fully awake yet, so it takes me a few seconds to realize I’m not dreaming. When I feel a gentle breath on my neck and hear a small moan, my eyes fly open. Holding my breath, I look around, realizing I’m in Bryce’s cabin. My heart sinks and guilt cascades over me. I need to get out of here… now!

I can’t think and can barely breathe, listening so intently to the man behind me, trying to figure out my next move in full out panic mode. I’m trying so hard not to move or hyperventilate. I need to calm down, clear my head, and devise a plan to get out of here… and fast. How the hell did I get myself into this mess? Ah, yes, my sister. I can’t believe she talked me into this! She made it sound so simple, but I have no clue what I should do. I’m dumbfounded and frozen with fear.

Why didn’t I pay closer attention to my girlfriends’ stories? They’ve all been in my shoes, and each one has relayed a wonderful tale of how they gracefully and skillfully escaped unnoticed from a lover’s bed. Why can’t I remember anything they did? Damn! All I know is what common sense is telling me to do. I need to get untangled, get myself out of this bed, get dressed, and slip out the door. I have to be quick and quiet. I can’t run the risk of him waking and seeing me. What would I say then? ‘Uh, good morning, that was fun, thank you, and goodbye, then run out the door?

I’m a coward, I know, but I suck at confrontations, and I will do whatever it takes to find the easiest way out of an uncomfortable situation. Slipping out the door unnoticed would be the easiest thing for me to do right now, so why can’t I move? Why do I feel so protected and content, lying here in his arms? Why does this feel… right?

I slowly lift Bryce’s arm and rest it behind my back. He doesn’t move or say anything, which gives me the confidence I need to continue. Inch by inch, I slowly shift my body to the edge of the bed, using swift, fluid movements, so I don’t shake him too much. Once I’m perched on the edge, I hold my breath and listen. I pray he hasn’t noticed my absence, but I’m way too scared to look over my shoulder. When I hear nothing but slow, steady breathing, I assume Bryce is still asleep. It’s now or never. Holding my breath again, I carefully remove the sheet from my body, slowly swing my feet over the bed, and stand. I frantically look around the room, searching for my clothes, but I can’t seem to focus.

I’m buck ass naked and covered in goose bumps, my heart is racing, and I’m shaking. It would be all too easy to crawl back in bed, but I shake my head at that crazy thought. I need to stick to the mission—get out and get out fast! I quickly scan the floor at my feet. Shit, where are my clothes? I feel like I’m on a scavenger hunt as I scurry around the cabin, looking for anything to put on. I spot my shirt and pants by the couch and quickly dress. Scanning the cabin again, I find my panties and bra near the bathroom door and my shoes on top of the dresser. I gather them quickly and tuck them all under my left arm as I make a beeline for the door. As soon as my hand hits the knob, my body freezes. My heart’s screaming at me to look back. I can’t leave Bryce forever without taking one last look at him.

Damn, my memory was right. My mouth literally drops open. Bryce is absolutely gorgeous. The covers leave little to the imagination. I obviously did a horrible job slipping out of the bed, and when he rolled to his back, the sheet went missing. My eyes glued to his chiseled six-pack and strong, muscular chest, I stand there gawking, as last night’s memories flood my brain. Damn, he was way more than I bargained for. He was an incredible lover, and he outdid any fantasy I ever had. If circumstances were different, I would stay. If I was a stronger person, I would stay. But my past has ruined me. My heart is still shattered, and Bryce was just a one-night stand. I used him to revive my broken heart and arouse my senses. It’s been far too long since I had a connection with a man, but there is no way I’m ready for more than what Bryce and I had last night. He was just a quest, nothing more. Turning back to the door, I quietly slip out.

"Can I
help you?" I ask dryly without standing.
"Don't
you get snotty with me, you trashy bitch," she hisses back at me.
"Who do you think you are? There are rules here, and low-class sluts like
you follow them or else."
Snotty?
Me?

Momentarily
taken aback by her hostility, it takes me a few beats to register the rest of
her words. Trashy bitch, I can handle. Low-class, well, she's not entirely
wrong. But slut?
Nuh-uh. No way, no day.
I stand,
pulling myself up to my full five feet eight inches, and get nose to nose with
Fascist Barbie.
"Look,
princess, I'm sitting over here, minding my own business. What the fuck have I
done to offend your delicate sensibilities? Nothing. You don't fucking know me.
So. You. Don't. Get. To. Call. Me. A. Slut." I fire each staccato word at
her. Though I’m genuinely bewildered by this girl’s unmistakable hatred towards
me, I am also seriously pissed off by her shitty attitude. "Back the fuck
up, Barbie, and leave me alone. Shoo." Flicking my fingers at her
dismissively, I stand my ground, waiting for her and her minions to leave. To
my surprise, she leans in even closer, her cloyingly sweet perfume wrapping
around me like a candy-scented lasso.
"That's
not how it works here. You don't get to just show up out of the blue and jump
the line." She peers spitefully down her clearly after-market nose at me.
"There are rules, and just because you're a Bradleigh, don't think they
don't apply to you.”

“What’s your name?” My voice rumbles quietly.
Her brows shoot together and her eyes dart away. Her look is
a dead giveaway that she’s quickly coming up with a fake name.
“Eve.”
My lips quirk up. She chose wisely. The name suits her.
Innocent, but naughty.
“I’ll make it worth it, Eve.”
“Mighty sure of yourself, aren’t you…?” she asks, leaving
the sentence open.
“Taylor,” I supply, taking a number out of her book and
giving her my own fake name. “And I’ve never had any complaints before.”
She puts her hand on my chest and toys with the top button,
like she’s contemplating undoing it.
“Maybe I’ll be the first.” She smirks.
I dip closer, feeling the heat from her lips on mine. It
drives me wild. “Doubtful.”
“So, what exactly are we talking about here?”
“You tell me.” I grab a loose piece of her hair and trail
the end over her neck. Her eyelids lower. “What do you want?”
She leans her head back against the wall. “One night only.”
Disappointment hits, which is confusing as hell. I never
want more than a single night. I’m usually itching to leave before the night’s
even over. Something tells me it’ll be different with this woman.
“One night only. No strings. Anything goes,” I suggest.
She mulls it over before she dips her chin. “Deal.”
“Not good enough. This needs to be sealed with more than
words.”
Before she can say anything more, I lower my head. The
instant my lips touch hers, I know this is going to be a long and enjoyable
night. I’ll make damn sure it is.
Her mouth opens immediately to meet my probing tongue. She
tastes delicious. Like some kind of exotic fruit.
Laying my forearm flat on the wall, I press my chest into
hers. Her small moan and the bite of her nails digging into my pecs goes
straight to my dick. When she tilts her hips up and pushes her mound against
me, I have to fight back the urge to yank her skirt up, tear away her panties,
and shove inside her.
Sweet mercy, I’ve barely touched the woman and she’s already
driving me mad.

“What were you
and the guys talking about?”
Ah, so she was
watching me. I wonder what is going through that pretty little head of hers.
“Nothing much. Aaron was thanking us for offering to work with him and Julie.
He’s nervous. If we can’t help them loosen up, he’ll lose his seat on the
team.”
“He’ll be fine.”
She brushes it off.
“I agree, and
that’s what I told him.” We continue to move to the music, but our movements
are a bit off as we get lost in our conversation.
“What were you
girls talking about?” I stare into her eyes, hoping to get a glimpse of that
interest Aaron was referring to.
She laughs.
“You.” She pokes me in the chest.
“Me?” That
surprised me but thrills me at the same time.
She nods. “You.”
She spins around.
“Dare I ask what
about?”
She stops dancing
and fans her face. “I’m hot, wanna get a drink?” I guess I’m not going to hear
what she was talking about.
“Sure.” We walk
back toward the house together to grab something to drink. Destiny stocks the
coolers with tons of liquor options. She has mini bottles of wine, wine
coolers, beer, hard tea, and so on. We’ve all tried to kick in for the parties,
but she never allows us too. She hasn’t come out and said it but has hinted
that her parents left her very well off.
“I’ll grab us
drinks. You grab us some seats.” She offers.
I walk over to a
quieter area and grab us two empty chairs. I’m really hoping to get her to open
up. Jade and I have known each other a while, but Jade is not one to talk
freely with anyone anymore.
“Here.” She hands
me a beer. “You know, if you keep drinking beer, your six-pack abs are going to
disappear,” she says with amusement.
I laugh. “You’ve
noticed my abs?”
She rolls her
eyes and takes the seat next to me. “Bentley, let’s be real, I’m not dead. I
still see men.” She takes a sip of her drink.
“It’s the part
about you seeing me that I’m interested in.” I take a pull from my beer. I work
out hard for my abs. Between dance and my community gym, there’s no way I’m
losing my abs to a couple of beers.
She leans back in
her lounge chair, crossing her long, lean legs at her ankles as she sips on her
spiked seltzer. I never realized how much I noticed her until she became
single, and I made it my mission to make her mine.
“Bentley, I want
to move on, but when you’ve been hurt the way I have, it’s hard to trust.” She
glances over at me.
I inch our chairs
a bit closer to keep our conversation private. Leaning forward, I rest my
elbows on my knees. “I’m sure it is, but what if I told you I was willing to
earn that trust?”
She sighs. “I’d
say, I need to think about it.” She glances over at me. “I swore off dancers
five months ago and now...”
“Jade,” I say her
name, stopping her from going further. “It’s not dancers you have to watch for,
some men just suck. They are pussies and can’t admit when things aren’t working
out for them.”
She nods,
watching the waves crash upon the shore. “It’s all over the studio that we’re
going to end up a couple because of the connection we have when we dance.”
There’s uncertainty in her voice.
“Do you deny the
connection?” I’m not sure she can. It’s obvious.
She grins. “No,
there’s no denying that.” She sits up and turns in her chair, our legs
intertwined, and she looks me in the eye. “The problem is dancing is my escape.
I leave everything out on that dance floor, my heart, and soul.” She shakes her
head. “I’m not sure I can handle being hurt by another dance partner.”
