Kate ran, planning to leave behind a shell of a life, giving herself strict rules to live by in order to keep the past hidden. But these rules have her trading one prison for another.

Then Kai sneaks into her life, shoving through her shields, getting her to break every one of her rules. An unexpected surprise threatens to unravel her secrets and strip away the control she fought so hard for. But she embraces it, diving into the unknown with Kai.

When her past catches up with her, she battles to keep those she has come to love protected, refusing to relent the strength she found within. But when stuck in a place she never wants to return to and with no chance of escape, she fears losing everything she's allowed herself to cherish.

Charyse Allan is an avid reader but didn’t become one until high school. This is also when she realized her passion for writing; however, it wasn’t until a couple of years into her marriage that she tried her hand at writing a novel.

She grew up in Arizona, dancing at her mom’s studio and riding horses at her dad’s house. She’s a jack of many trades, having been a pastry chef, line cook, server and secretary, but is now living her dream as a writer.

She published her first novel in 2014 and has published four others since. She is working toward her BA in Professional Writing through GCU. Now married to her best friend/high school sweetheart, they live in the sweltering heat of Arizona raising their four kiddos and three Goldens. She still enjoys baking the occasional dessert for close friends and family. She's a bookaholic and chocoholic; her vices keep her sane, but YAH keeps her patient.

A timeless love story set amidst the glamour of the Belle Époque…

Paris, 1889: Amélie Audet toils in a laundry when, only steps away, investors promise the most glittering dance hall the city has ever seen. Determined to secure an audition, she stumbles into a meeting with the alluring owner of the Moulin Rouge and must face her scandalous past.

Jasper Degrailly is enchanted by a painting come to life. He sets out to seduce Amélie with his gilded world and the dark warrens of his mind. Yet he has his own sordid entanglements, and soon the gentleman and the singer must manage the greedy machinations of bohemian and high-society Paris.

Caught between competing artists, directors, and dance halls, Amélie struggles to earn the role that could make her a star, while Jasper strives to let go of his tortured past and hold on to his bright future. Eventually, their fates collide, and they find themselves torn between their desperate hearts and their irreconcilable lives.

FOUR DAYS LATER, Amélie stood before No. 7 rue de la Paix with a note in hand:

Amélie,
My carriage will arrive for you at noon on Saturday.
JD

The House of Worth. She couldn’t afford even a speck of dust on the floor of the place, let alone a haute-couture gown.

After seeing Aubrey at the Salon, she’d felt certain it would signal an end to Monsieur Degrailly’s interest. But when she walked in the door, he was waiting.

“What am I doing here?” she asked after exchanging courtesies.

“You need an evening gown, and we need to get your measurements.” He directed her to a room filled with cast figures wearing the most elegant dresses she’d ever seen.

“They’re beautiful, but I can’t afford these.”

“I can afford them.”

“Have you suffered a head wound?”

He chuckled. “My mind is perfectly sound.”

“Need I remind you we haven’t come to any arrangement.”

“I know, and I’ve been giving it a lot of thought.” He folded his arms across his chest and leaned against a sofa. “You have this idea of how wonderful your life will be when you get on that stage, but you haven’t any idea how wonderful it might be with me. I intend to show you.”

She raised her brow.

“This is merely a costume so that you may play your part.”

She sighed. “What part is that? I’m almost afraid to ask.”

“My mistress, of course.”

She shook her head.

“One night. Give me one night, and I’ll give you your audition.”

“I’ve told you I won’t have sex to sing.”

“This isn’t that. It seems like it, looks like it, feels like it…”

“But it isn’t.”

“It isn’t. You paired the two together. I didn’t.”

He was right. He hadn’t.

“And before you say her name, Daphne’s a good sport. She sees other people. I see other people. We see people.”

“Your ex-wife? Do you see her as well?”

“Jos has no interest in seeing me.”

“But you have an abiding interest in her, I think.”

He smiled flatly as he stared at her. Finally, he said, “I’m not looking for love, Amélie.”

“Neither am I.”

“Then why do you hesitate?”

EXCERPT:

Eric had been trying so hard to walk the line. Head down, eyes forward, pocketing every spare penny to put toward his future. Then Demi Vaughan came into his line of vision, with her glossy brown curls and her hip-swaying walk, and whammo. His better judgment got coshed on the head, tied up and stuffed into the trunk of a car.

This was such a dumb move. On so many levels. He was the Prophet’s spawn, she was a rich girl, the town princess, the college grad. He was practically broke, she lived in the biggest house in Shaw’s Crossing. He was an orphan with a past best not talked about, and she was the granddaughter of the guy whose family gave the town its very name.

That was the girl he got a raging hard-on for. Because evidently he liked to punch up the challenge. Keep it interesting for himself. True to form.

He kept seeing the scene tomorrow, at the river, in his mind’s eye. Demi soaking wet. Clingy, scanty clothes. Her cloud of dark hair floating around her. Nipples tight from the cold.

He hit the accelerator. The sudden burst of speed knocked the wobbling window right off its track, and it fell down inside the car door with a loud, decisive thunk.

Aw, shit.

He could still hear his better judgment back there, trapped in the trunk. Howling, kicking out the taillights, trying to be heard. But he just couldn’t listen to it.

Stay down, you noisy dickwad. I got things to do.

Author Bio:

Shannon McKenna is the NYT and USA TODAY bestselling author of over twenty action packed, turbocharged romantic thrillers, among them the wildly popular McCloud Brothers & Friends Series, along with two new scorching romantic suspense series, The Hellbound Brotherhood and The Obsidian Files. She loves tough and heroic alpha males, heroines with the brains and guts to match them, terrifying villains who challenge them to their utmost, adventure, blazing sensuality, and most of all, the redemptive power of true love.

Since she was small she has loved abandoning herself to the magic of a good book, and her fond childhood fantasy was that writing would be just like that but with the added benefit of being able to take credit for the story at the end. The alchemy of writing turned out to be messier than she'd ever dreamed, but what the hell, she loves it anyway and hopes that readers enjoy the results of her experiments. She loves to hear from her readers.
