He stole my hand, but I won’t let him steal my heart.

On the worst day of my life I was given away by my own blood.
Sold to a handsome bad guy in exchange for my father’s debt.
Easton Van Buren claimed me and locked me up in his mansion.
That devilish man wanted more than just my body …
So I ran.
But when a rich man’s prized possession escapes…
He’ll do anything he can to get her back into his claws.
Anything he can to entice her heart to fall for him…
And submit.

Book Two of The Debt Duet.

My pupils dilate. “Is that—”
“A collar, for a filthy pet,” he says, biting his lip.
“But …” I mutter.
“You didn’t think I’d let you get off that easily, did you?”
He approaches me with the collar and goes to one knee as he wraps it around my neck and locks it into place before I can even raise a finger. I scratch at it and tug it away as he attaches the chain.
He tips up my chin. “Don’t fight it.”
Then he gets up, still holding the chain. I’m like a dog on a leash … and the dirty grin on his face makes me want to bite his face.
My nostrils flare. “How long does this thing stay on?”
“As long as I want it to,” he replies. “As long as it takes for you to learn your lesson.”
“What lesson?”
“That you don’t get to turn away from me. That you don’t run away from a man like me. That you don’t … go and fall for another man’s charms.” There’s a hint of betrayal glimmering in his eyes.

PROLOGUE
River /
Present / 23

The velvet
caress of silk sheets against my bare skin leaves me hyperaware of what I’ve
done. Early morning sunlight slips through the cracked blinds and kisses my exposed
back, coating the room in soft pinks and yellows.
Steady,
rhythmic breathing sounds from behind me. In, out. In, out. It’s a melody that
makes my muscles lock, too afraid to reacquaint my eyes with every dip and
curve of chiseled muscle displayed inches away.
His natural
musky scent wraps around me, overwhelming my senses until my heart thumps
wildly in my chest. It doesn’t take away the memories of lingering touches,
gentle kisses, and an overpowering sense of belonging. And less than twelve
hours ago, I belonged to Everett Tucker in ways I never thought possible in the
ten years of knowing him.
His touches
scorched me.
His kisses
burned me.
And his
body…
The
mattress dips with the shift of his weight. I hold my breath, waiting to see if
he’s awake. When his soft snores echo in the half-empty room, I release the
breath and white knuckle the sheets against my breasts. Carefully, I sit up and
squeeze my eyes closed like it’ll soften the blow of reality.
I wait for
the pounding headache or quake of unavoidable nausea to punish me, but my
conscience reminds me of what I already know. I wasn’t drunk last night. What
I’ve done can’t be blamed on alcohol.
My hand
drags across my bare neck until my heart thunders in pure panic over my missing
possession. I swallow my anxiety when I catch the silver chain resting on the
night stand and remember the very moment he took it off me.
Nothing but
skin. That’s what he said he wanted between us. I’ve only taken this necklace
off to shower and sleep. It goes everywhere with me, the silver paint palette
and brush charms sweeping over my heartbeat as a reminder that he cares. But in
the moment I had him as more than a wish, a hope, a dream, he didn’t want it
lingering.
Nothing but
skin.
My
fingertips touch the newest charm, a cracked heart, and I suck in a short
breath when the contact shocks me. Clenching the sheets tighter to me, I turn
slightly to peek through my peripheral and see a tussle of dirty blond hair
against my starch white pillow case.
Look, my
conscience taunts. Look at him.
Slivers of
tan skin make their way into my sight as I shift, my gaze drifting up the
mountain of hard muscles that form his toned biceps as they wrap around a
pillow. Worrying my bottom lip, my heart summersaults in my chest when the curve
of his square jaw comes into view. The sharp line of it is coated with early
morning shadow that he’ll shave despite preferring a thin layer of stubble.
He looks
peaceful when he’s sleeping; the hard edge he normally radiates eased to a
laxed slumber. From this angle, I can see the faded white scar that stretches
from the bottom of his left ear along the curve of his throat, landing just
above his pulse. You wouldn’t know it’s there unless you know the story, and he
doesn’t tell just anybody.
But I’m not
just anybody.
Especially
not now.
My throat
tightens from the emotions lodging in the back of it as I scope out his
sculpted body. He works hard for every muscle, spends countless hours in the
gym or training at the fire department, and it shows. The man sleeping beside
me has been a figment of my imagination that I’ve conjured thousands of times,
but his body is a masterpiece I never could have perfected unless I saw it in
person.
I absorb
the memory of his body spread on my mattress, bare to me. Every vulnerability
laying in a mess of sheets, open to pull apart and dissect and regret when the
sun fully rises.
Less than
twelve hours ago I belonged to the minty eyed boy I’ve loved since I was
thirteen. But Everett Tucker isn’t mine to love.
He stirs when
I rise from bed.
“Everett,”
I whisper brokenly, my heart shattering inside my chest. I can feel the pieces
splintering apart as I choke out my final words. “We made a mistake.”

Book Description

If anyone tells you hunting ghosts is less dangerous than chasing down real-life criminals, they’re wrong. Very, very wrong.

Case two takes us to a New Jersey Shore Inn. A beautiful, yet dead opera singer seems to be begging for help, but her pleas do nothing but terrorize the locals.

While trying to decipher the clues to her 1919 disappearance, uncovering hair-raising horrors, it becomes clear that Jason and I no longer see eye-to-eye.

Jason wants me to stop meddling with the supernatural. He wants me to stop risking my life by interacting with demons and spirits.

What he doesn’t understand is this is my life. These tortured souls need my help in order to move on. How do I walk away from that—from them?

But the better question is—how do I walk away from him?

Trudy Hicks Ghost Hunter Case One- The Deceit

Excerpt 2:
The dog, who had
been sleeping at her feet, let out a low snarl and stood at attention. His
focus was on the window that faced the lawn by the pool and the beach beyond.
Trudy pushed back her chair and stood stiffly and tip-toed quietly to the
window, and peered out.
Her heart rose
in her throat when she saw him and recognized him immediately from her dream.
The stern face and cold eyes of the un-named uncle stared back at her. He stood
just ten feet away on the lawn, illuminated in the moonlight and looking just
like he did on the beach that day in her dream.
She turned and
dashed out of the room, pulling her phone from the pocket of her shorts and
heading toward the doors by the pool to chase the phantom down. Rocky, yapping
and whining, was by her side.
Trudy padded
lightly through the pool area and out the wrought-iron gate that led to the
lawn and the beach beyond. She gave a command to the big dog for silence and
directed him around the pool shed opposite her. The light from her cell phone
illuminated the corner of the structure, Trudy knew if anyone or thing were
hiding there, Rocky would flush them out toward her.
The night was
still and humid. She felt a bead of perspiration trickle down her temple to her
cheek and whisked it away. The crash of the waves on the other side of the dune
was the only sound interrupting the silence.
The two-way
radio on her belt sounded. “Where the hell are you?” came Jason’s voice.
She listened
into the night for a moment then whispered, “By the pool shed,” before turning
down the volume when she heard Rocky snarl.

Her heart
pounded furiously in her chest, and she fought off the spell of dizziness that
suddenly overcame her. Rocky’s bark was louder and more urgent. She pressed
against the structure and made her way toward the sound.
The hair on the
back of her neck rose, and a chill slid down her body while her knees went
weak. She knew someone was just beyond her line of vision. She sensed it, her
nerves screamed it, and the loud noise that was coming from the big dog a few
feet away confirmed it.
Now at the end
of the structure, leaning against the warm metal siding not only for cover but
balance, Trudy gazed outover the lawn then ever so slowly peeked around the
corner.
“What the hell
are you doing?” Jason whispered harshly behind her, causing her to screech.
Trudy stumbled awkwardly back when something white flew through the air
directly at her head. She ducked, and the thing hissed as it catapulted over
Jason’s shoulder and landed a few feet away.
“A cat?” The
feline looked at them grumpily before darting up the nearest tree when Rocky
gave chase.
“This is why you
came out here? A damn cat?” Jason checked his shoulder where the feline’s claws
tore his shirt. Satisfied that the skin underneath was not wounded, he looked
up at her, waiting for her reply.
Trudy ignored his
question and stepped forward to fuss over his shoulder, not trusting that it
was unscathed, and ran her hand over the smooth skin. She avoided eye contact.
Jason grabbed the hand on his shoulder and pulled her closer.
“So, Hicks, are
you going to tell me what the hell brought you out here when I specifically
told you to stay put?” He studied her face before dropping his eyes to her
lips.
Trudy pushed
back the heavy weight of her hair from her sweaty brow and brushed a kiss the
scruffy hair on his chin.
“Umm, I think
you should learn quick, Young, that I don’t do well with orders.”

My Review: 4*

The Kept is the 2nd book in the Trudy Hicks Ghost Hunter series by Lori Zaremba. It is the 2nd book in the series I have read as well. I love the characters in this book and the ghosts as well. Lori makes this a fun but spooky read with the great characters. There is a lot of romance in this book between Trudy and Jason. I would say bliss but there is a lot of fighting between the 2 as well. The ghosts are awesome though and the Ocean Inn sounds like a place I would love to visit.

In the book Trudy and her band of ghost hunters are on their way to New Jersey to the Ocean Inn to rid the place of the ghosts before the place opens to the public. Once there they find themselves not only ridding the place of the ghosts but also trying to solve a 100 year old cold case. In the early 1900's blond girls start coming up missing as well as members of the family who owned the home. Some of the spirits at the home are good but some not so much. Trudy almost looses her life to the spirits more than once in this book.

This is a pretty fast paced book and the backstory of the family is as awesome as present day. I can't wit for book 3 in the series to not only find out where the group will go next but also to see if Trudy and Jason start their happily ever after.
